LEGO safe has functional 3-number combo lock

LEGO safe has functional 3-number combo lock

When people aren't amazing us with virtual blocky creations in Minecraft, they're using real-world LEGO blocks to do the same. In this case, one crafty LEGO user has created a safe with a functional 3-number combination lock. The safe itself looks about 6 x 6 x 6 inches overall, but it's not the size that matters -- it's the lock, which the creator, Jason Allemann, shows off on video (available after the jump!).

This Lego robot is controlled with a Lego exosuit

Now here's a Lego creation that's impressive! A humanoid robot with arms and legs is controlled with a wearable Lego exoskeleton. It should be obvious by now that this isn't an official upcoming kit from the Danish toy maker, but rather a DIY project from engineer Danny Benedettelli. The setup is powered by an Arduino hobbyist board, and the exosuit wearer is able to send commands from several feet away. When the suit's arms move, the robot's follow the same motion.

Original LEGO calculation busted by math professor

Original LEGO calculation busted by math professor

This Friday a documentary will be released by the name of "A LEGO Brickumentary," and in it, a math professor will tell you how many different LEGO creations you can make. Of course the real number isn't entirely feasible to calculate. Back in 1958, LEGO estimated and suggested through a patent (as created by the original LEGO creator's son, Godtfred Kirk Christiansen) that six standard LEGO bricks could potentially be stacked in around 103-million ways. According to math professor Soren Eilers, whoever suggested 103-million was about 900-million off the mark. Behold this tiny brick clip.

LEGO computer gets even smaller with micro PC system

LEGO computer gets even smaller with micro PC system

For some people, a PC isn't just a work horse. It's also a way of life. For these people, sprucing up their computers is just as important as beefing them up with specs and features. And what better way to spruce a rather bland, industrial looking box than by encasing them inside LEGO bricks? Yes, Total Geekdom's Mike Schropp is back and this time, he's really gone the distance. He has created what is practically the smallest LEGO computer. But as they say, don't judge a book by its cover. Or, in this case, a block.

This prosthetic arm is expandable with Lego

This prosthetic arm is expandable with Lego

A design student from Sweden's Umeå University has created what is quite possibly the coolest prosthetic arm imaginable for kids. Simply put, the arm is directly compatible with Lego, letting kids replace the standard hand-like gripping attachment for one they can easily start snapping plastic bricks onto. The prosthetic is specifically designed to be simple for kids to use, with little more than a twist-and-lock mechanism. Carlos Arturo Torres Tovar, the student who created the arm, even got Lego FutureLab and disabilities organization CIREC to collaborate on the project).

Lego to end use of oil-based plastic in bricks by 2030

Lego, the iconic plastic toy building blocks, has announced it's going begin making a drastic change to the way its product is manufactured. See, while the bricks are popular around the world, they're actually not very environmentally friendly. The company has set a goal of eliminating its use of ABS, the oil-based plastic, by the year 2030, and they're spending $150 million to build a new sustainable materials center that will in turn develop an oil-free plastic.
