I have seen some cool lamps over the years. There are lava lamps and all manner of commercial UFO themed lamps that you can buy made from paper and other materials. I had a lamp that looked like a Dallas Cowboys helmet when I was a kid that I thought was awesome. None of the lamps I have seen compare to these UFO lamps that Jason Dietz has made.

The lamps are 5-feet 5-inches tall and made out of recycled glass tubes. The lamps also have light diffusers and acrylic rings with ten gallons of water inside and a wealth of LEDs, CFLs, and halogen light bulbs. The bubbles in the water are created by a 20-gallon air pump like the type you find in a big aquarium.

The result is the most awesome lamp to ever be awesome. The UFO at the top looks like it’s shooting down a tractor beam to brink a little plastic cow up for mutilating. I can’t imagine how long these things took to build, check out the video below that is sadly missing a how to for making your own. I want one of these!

Humanscale makes all sorts of gear for the office from chairs to desks. I have one of the company’s chairs and it was all kinds of expensive, but very comfortable making it money well spent in my book. Humanscale has unveiled a new task light that it green called the Element LED task light.

The thing looks pretty cool and would go great on your desk with your other high tech gear. The element uses a MCX LED multi-chip LED that produces a large light footprint of neutral white light at 3500 kelvin. The light color is designed to meet the guidelines for ergonomic reading.

The special tech inside the LED light uses only one bulb so there are no shadows on the desk as you would see with multi-bulb LED light fixtures. The Element needs only 7W of power and produces light equivalent to a 70W incandescent. The lamp is made from 81% recycled content and can be 99% recycled itself. It comes in white and silver or all silver colors for $338. Certainly not cheap, but cool and green gear rarely is.

Video after the cut

Each panel demands just 0.7W, and the whole lamp requires just a 3.5W 5V power-supply. For that, you get a far better balance of the spectrum compared to fluorescent lighting, as you can see in the video below. No word on how much a Project TOPLESS lamp might cost, but the plan is to start production and ramp up to several thousand units by the end of 2011.

If your father is Sir James Dyson, inventor of – among other things – the Dyson vacuum cleaner, you can either find a completely unrelated industry to work in or bite the bullet and try to innovate your way out his shadow. Jake Dyson chose the latter route, and came up with this: the Motorlight Wall. A remote-controlled lamp with adjustable iris, the Motorlight Wall can uniquely offer various spreads of light between 10 and 120 degrees.

Intended to be used either individually or, more dramatically, in sets, up to thirty Motorlight Wall units can be controlled – separately or together – by a single remote. As well as angle, brightness can be adjusted; the housing is available in five finishes: red, blue, black and white, plus a very Dyson-esque clear.

The Jake Dyson Motorlight Wall was meant to go on sale in November last year, priced at £249 ($394) with the remote at £28 ($44), but there’s no sign of a purchase option. It more recently stared in an art installation called “Focal Shift” at New York Design Week 09, in collaboration with artist Jason Bruges. Photos of that in the gallery below.

If you’re looking for a greener lighting option, then you’ll be pleased to hear that this lamp is powered up just by you spinning it. Sure, we’ve all seen the crank-powered sort of lamps before, but this one takes a different approach.

The lamp itself is in the shape of a globe. It shines brightly and adds a nice accent lighting to the space. And in order to power it up, you just need to spin the globe around. There’s nothing different from this than a regular globe, except for the illumination factor.

Now, we don’t know how much you need to spin it for a certain amount of light, but this does have promise. While just a concept at this point in time, there is a working prototype out there. So, we’ll have to wait and see if this lamp reaches mass production, but until then, we can all enviously stare at the photo.

In fact, we often see lamps that double as iPod docks and here the Conof USB desk lamp falls right into that specific category.

So, you plug the lamp into the USB port on your computer and it will then shine a light on your work space. It’s unique C-shape makes sure of that. Plus, it can swivel 270 degrees. Another feature is its iPod dock, adding another level of functionality.

We don’t know the price or when or if this lamp will be available to the general public, but one thing is for sure. This lamp is pretty cool and proves that simplicity is often best. Even better, you can have a multi-functional device without it looking like something from another planet.

Why oh why have there been so many abuses of the teddy bear lately? Headless teddy bear flash drives and now this lamp? What is the world coming to!

But in all seriousness, the Teddy Bear Lamp is just like any other light fixture. It features a shade made from black fabric that sits on a teddy bear’s body. He’s soft and fuzzy but missing his head!

In its place is a light bulb to brighten up your room and cast an eerie glow over the decapitated bear. You can get this bear abomination for £59.99 or $84.75. Funny stuff, really but why do they always have to mutilate the teddy bear? Why not a fish or a giraffe or something?

It’s always nice when a device is a multitasker. And if anyone watches the cooking show, “Good Eats,” they’ll know how a multitasking device can save you money and space. However, what would you say to a lamp that is also a stereo speaker?

The AmpLamp is a concept design that sports the form of a lamp, yet has speakers tucked away within the lamp shade. The base of the lamp has a subwoofer. The really cool thing is that it utilizes NXT technology, which can turn a flat surface into a speaker. It also uses Airsound, which is noticeable by the flared out speakers on the sides of the lamp.

The speakers combine for an 80 watts of power. And yes, it is an actual, functioning lamp as well. Designed by Dominic Bromley, the AmpLamp is still just a concept, but it would be pretty cool if it were realized.

I’m all for totally useless gadgets and the USB Seamour Sheep Radioactive Lamp falls squarely in that category. And I say that with great admiration. After all, who wouldn’t want a lamp in the shape of a sheep that glows radioactive green?

This USB-powered lamp is based on the online comic series, Seamour Sheep and with his green glow, he’s sure to attract quite a bit of attention. However, this guy’s lazy expression and removable goggles do make him look pretty cool. You can’t forget the eye protection after all. But being that he’s a radioactive sheep, I don’t know how the goggles could help him. But that’s beside the point.

My favorite part of this USB lamp is how you turn it off. Lay the lamp on its side and the lights go off. Funny stuff. You can get your own USB Seamour Sheep Radioactive Lamp for $69.

The lamp has WiFi as well so it can constantly keep tabs on your power usage. Then, once the lamp is turned on, it will flash different colors to indicate how much power you are actually using. And yes, this lamp does look like a plant, as it’s meant to be a nod to the process of photosynthesis by which plants get their energy.

The Spark Lamp is intended to enhance the way the Swedish government plans to help consumers monitor their energy use in future homes.

This lamp works to maintain a constant level of light in a room. The panels that surround the sphere constantly shift and rotate by means of the internal 3 axis gearbox to either increase or decrease the brightness of the light. The panels block out more or less light depending on how much light there is coming in from outside.

This Chris Natt designed concept lamp looks like a thing of the future and if there’s any justice in the world, well see this one actually in production. How cool would that be?

This may not be a product officially sold through the people that created the game Asteroids. It is still just as cool and by no means are small novelty lamps.

Originally the designer based out of the UK, Koray Ozgen, created a hand-blown glass version. However, later decided to make a more durable model out of plastic. That way it could be more versatile and be used outdoors.

Although this is a product based out of the UK, recently it has made its way onto a different retailers site which is offering it up to those of us in the US. The fixtures can either be sat on the floor or hung as a pendant with one of their optional kits. For one of these fixtures it will cost you $176.

As I type this up, I am currently staring at the chandelier in my dining room. The rental company decided it hung a little too low. So instead of being thorough and making a nice clean job of shortening the wire they just hooked the chain it hangs from a little higher and let the excess chain and cord sort of hang there.

Now if they have purchased one of these lights, there wouldn’t be this issue. Since the main feature of this light is that the cord actually retracts. You can lower it for a bit of task lighting or raise it for mood lighting.

The cord adjusts from 20” to 57” and the lamp takes up to a 40W bulb. For one of these it will cost you $43.99 and if you snag a set of two it will cost $79.99.

It’s made to look like a firefly jar, but is actually a solar powered lamp. Just set it outside and let it charge up, then that night you’ll have a soft glow as you sit on your back porch.

It is said to glow and orange type color, one that is similar to that of a candle. It automatically turns on when it gets dark and is being sold for $45.

As of this past spring this cute little dandelion was made available to purchase. The cute little puff ball is meant to resemble the last point a dandelion reaches, when you can blow the seeds into the wind.

The lamp has a resin cast shade and an aluminum stand and would look great in any contemporary home. From the looks of the site it appears that there are two different sizes.

One that is 450mm in diameter and the other that is 300mm in diameter. It doesn’t actually say how tall the lamp measures. Also unlike a lot of their other products listed, this one doesn’t come with a price posted on the site. You have to actually contact them for more information.

This concept design may look like it’s made of flimsy bits of paper, but it is actually made of a single sheet of metal The piece of metal can stand alone or just hang from a nail on your wall.

The design was made by Jeth Koh, who has definitely simplified lighting. The metal was laser cut to give it the look you see here.

Kind of like looking at an interesting bit of artwork only to realize it’s made up of tiny little pictures to create one large picture. Although I’m a bit undecided still if I love it or hate it, I still think it is an interesting and fun idea.

This particular lamp was built from 121 recycled plastic knives. The lamp was made by Corey Daniels, using knives from his many BVD group lunches at the local fried chicken restaurant.

If you’re addicted to your pudding or yogurt and are constantly tossing out the plastic containers, you might consider turning them into a lampshade. Kianee did exactly that, creating this very retro lampshade.

You should probably be careful about the cups you pick since that will be what defines the overall look. Which is sad news for some, I know I’ve never seen any chocolate pudding cups that were this brightly colored.

The cups are strung together with little metal rings and require the use of low wattage bulbs. You wouldn’t want to melt those pudding cups. The lamp shown here has 70 different yogurt cups, so hopefully you either have a large family or just eat a lot of yogurt because otherwise it’s going to take a while.

If you have an old blender that is no longer working and you enjoy quirky lighting, this DIY project might be something to try out. This would be especially cool if you managed to snag a slightly more retro blender off of eBay or if you knew someone with one just lying around.

The project is fairly simple and doesn’t require a lot of tools, you just need a screwdriver and a basic light socket. The light socket can typically be found at your average hardware store.

You can read through the step by step instructions online on Instructables. The creator of this lamp decided to use a frosted glass to diffuse the light a bit and make the lighting not quite as harsh. However, it isn’t necessary to have frosted glass if you want to go a different route.

The lamp isn’t the full bottle, but just the cap itself. When placed onto the bottle it creates a very clever and convenient way to have a lamp handy at all times.

The cap fits the standard 2-inch wide mouth water bottle and the site claims that it is the brightest LED cap available. Although oddly the site doesn’t say how long it takes for the solar battery to charge up. It is currently being sold for $19.95.

It has several holes and pretty little jewels that give it the odd lighting it has. All together making the perfect little rocket for any die hard Sci-Fi geeks.

This was made by Baron Margo and unfortunately even though it does use quite a bit of old parts, it is still extremely pricey. It is being sold for $2,100, which means you might need to save up a bit for this gem.

Yes, it shines on my nightly read, but it’s just so normal. It doesn’t move, do tricks or even have a geeky flare. However, I think my search is over, this hang man is perfect for my bedroom.

Yes, it might creep out anyone who spots it, especially in the bedroom, but it’s just too morbidly fascinating to pass up. The table lamp called Colgao was handmade by en Pieza! studio.

The materials used were electric wire and iron which was treated to prevent corrosion. It was created sometime in 2007 but the site does not state how to get a hold of the product or when it might be released.

However, since you already have the stand, changing out a bottle for a Saline solution on days when you have a serious hangover might not be a bad idea. Its just a design, but provided you can pick up the IV stand, the hangers, and 4 bottles that are either used up from the hospital or maybe just look similar, you could probably make your own.

It’s a design from Christian Maas and is names Lichtinfusion which seems German and sound like it would translate into Light Infusion. That’s a fitting name for what it does, I kind of want one.

Alright, in all fairness it is pretty cool lamp, even if it does appear a bit childish to your significant other.

Don’t tell, but if it were cheaper I’d definitely hang it in my office above my desk. Making me feel super bad ass while playing some World of Warcraft. The light is adjustable as to how much light you want it to produce.

If you hang it low it will give off a nice soft glow, however, when hung higher it will give more direct light that shines through the clear bottom. The lamp is being sold for $100.

One cord is too long, another too short, you trip over them and knock them loose… the list goes on. The bottom line is that cords = Hassle.

Apparently though, it’s not true with everyone because Swedish design group ‘Form Us With Love” has created a Cord Lamp. It embraces the cord and puts it on display (Why do I feel like I should be doing performance art as I say that?). Anyway, let’s get down to it. The lamp has a completely flexible “cord” that allows you to shape the way it stands. Its “cord” base, however, is sturdy so it wont topple over. It seems this is one (probably the only one) appliance it’s ok for the cord to show.

It come with an uncovered 60w bulb that really brings the whole piece together. You could purchase one from the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art for $150.

Whenever I have the joy of sharing housing with someone I have to tone down my style. I would be perfectly happy in a room that looks like a fortune teller and a geek’s fashion sense got smooshed together in some strange combination. Somehow, I think this lamp would fit in perfectly with that mixture.

The lamps not only light up, but they glow in the dark as well. They are dipped in a lacquer to keep them from bursting into flames. The lamp comes in seven different color combinations and is priced at $85.

The lamp comes with three jellyfish which float around in a slow current creating a pleasant viewing experience. The best part of course is the LED lighting and whether you’re a rainbow of color or a solid color kind of person, you’ll find a setting to enjoy.

You can buy the Jellyfish Mood Lamp from Think Geek for $50. Not only is it great for creating the perfect atmosphere, it’ll also complete any Spongebob themed décor.

When you’re trying to create an environment, whether it’s warm and inviting or calm and relaxing, lighting can make or break a setting. M+K Design (Maiko Watanabe and Koichi Tanaka) have a new lamp which is sure to make a statement in any room.

The Sweet Icicle Lamp takes the neon lamp to the next level, sheathing it’s cold cathode fluorescent tube in a crystal clear wedge of acrylic, to give off a futuristic glow. It comes in two colors, white and blue, and a small and large size. While that doesn’t give you many choices it’s still bound to give off a lasting impression.

This same technology can be found in many other modern electronics like, LCD screens. Even though it shares the same lighting the Sweet Icicle Lamp is bound to be found illuminating more than just offices in the near future, especially with a moderate price range of $112-$150.
