As it seems to be with all great technology projects, Google started in a garage. As any garage band can tell you, great inspiration comes from working in someone's personal space, dreaming of the greatness of a dedicated home base - for Google, that time was 15 years ago this week. To celebrate, Google has done several things - one of them being a miniature party in the original Susan Wojcicki-owned home of Google's worldwide HQ.

Android KitKat teased with updates for Hangouts, Gmail, Search

This week the teams behind several of Google's key apps for Android have ushered in updates that tie the family together closer, ushering in an environment ripe for a new operating system iteration. That new version is, of course, Android 4.4 KitKat, and considering Google has been ushering in the press on the subject so readily over the past couple of weeks, there's little doubt that this system is far from ready for prime-time. This weeks' app updates include Gmail for Android, Hangouts for Android, and Google Now - through Google Search, of course.

New Nexus phone spotted in Android 4.4 KitKat unveiling

In today's obligatory unveiling video of the new Android statue for Google's lawn full of statues of desserts, a new Google smartphone has appeared. This may very well be the next-generation Nexus device as it does indeed have the word Nexus written on it - though in a bit of a cut with what may be some black tape over the logo for secrecy. This device looks to be replicating the look (and perhaps the feel) of the 2013 edition of the Nexus 7, what with its massive back-facing camera land and horizontal logo (which is also massive).

Android KitKat branding discussed by Hershey Vice President of U.S. Chocolate

Google has pulled a first for its Android system, choosing to brand the next version -- Android 4.4 -- with a product's trademark rather than going with a generic dessert. The information was dropped today by Android's Sundar Pichai, who revealed the name but gave precious little information about the branding choice. Hershey's Vice President of U.S. Chocolate, Jennifer Podhajsky, has given some info to the Vancouver Sun, however.
