Mass Effect 3 Kinect voice control gets video demo

BioWare's Mass Effect 3 will use Microsoft's Kinect sensor bar not for motion- and gesture-control but for spoken voice commands that augment traditional gamepad play, speeding up the action by streamlining group tactics and flipping between weapons. Rather than pause the game, use the command wheel to decide non-player sidekick actions and then return to play, BioWare showed VentureBeat how commands like "carnage" can automatically trigger an attack on the opponents you've highlighted.

Energy net-zero Eco-home is iPad and Kinect controlled

A net-zero energy house concept could actually feed power into the grid using a bank of solar panels and innovative exterior insulation cladding, without sacrificing either style or geek-appeal. CHIP - or Compact Hyper-Insulated Prototype - is the handiwork of students from the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc) and California Institute of Technology (Caltech), wrapping a thick thermal envelop around a house controlled by an iPad and a Kinect sensor bar.

Kinect HD set-top box tipped for Xbox LIVE TV plans

Microsoft's Xbox TV plans continue to trickle out, with talk of a Kinect-based set-top box for 2012 that would offer streaming multimedia content with a voice and motion controlled UI and sub-$200 price tag. Variously codenamed "Live Xbox", "Kinect Box" and "Kinect HD", the new STB will resemble a low-profile version of the existing Kinect, The Daily's sources suggest, with a larger base to accommodate power, HDMI and USB ports. Availability has been "pushed back" it's said, from an original early-2012 window, though it should arrive prior to the next-gen "Xbox 720."

Apple 3D display & Kinect-style tracking system still in labs

Apple 3D display & Kinect-style tracking system still in labs

A newly filed Apple patent application suggests the company is still working on a Kinect-style 3D motion tracking system, that could create a virtual desktop responding to a user's hand and finger movements rather than keyboard and mouse actions. The application, Three-dimensional imaging and display system, describes a system where "user input is optically detected in an imaging volume": in short, both of a user's hands are tracked in the space around an Apple computer, and on-screen or projected virtual controls - such as dials, buttons or pens - can be manipulated as if touching them in real life.

Would A Kinect-Equipped Television Be A Hit?

Would A Kinect-Equipped Television Be A Hit?

As of late, we’ve been hearing a lot about a possible Apple television. The latest rumors suggest the set will launch late next year or in early 2013, and could offer access to apps and iCloud, among several other features. As I noted on these pages recently, I’m excited by the prospect of an Apple television, and I can say without any doubt that I will be first in line to buy the set if and when it launches.

But what if Apple isn’t the only company thinking seriously about getting into the television space? What if Microsoft, armed with its Kinect motion peripheral, tries its luck at taking on Vizio, Samsung, and all other vendors in the TV space?
