Kindle 3G with Special Offers slices off $25 in return for ads

With Amazon's Kindle with Special Offers already being the best-selling model in the company's ereader range - despite having only hit virtual shelves in late April - it's little surprise that the retailer has rolled out a second version. Kindle ebook sales exceed print sales in US

Amazon has announced that Kindle ebook sales now outnumber physical paperback and hardback sales, the digital platform overtaking print in just four years. Since April 1, Amazon says, it has sold 105 Kindle ebooks for every 100 print books on its US site. That’s not just limited to cases where both formats are available, either; it takes into account print titles where no Kindle equivalent is on offer (though free Kindle ebooks aren’t counted).

Amazon has confirmed that digital subscribers to the New York Times Kindle edition will get free access to the newspaper's website as part of their bundled content.  The NY Times paywall - announced earlier this month and in operation since yesterday - is priced from $15 per month for web and smartphone access, but if you have a $19.99 per month Kindle subscription you'll also be able to access the main site.
