Amazon Kindle Fire publishers leak, used PlayBook as template

The Amazon Kindle Fire tablet may be just a day away from launch, but further details of the Android-based ereader slate continue to leak. Originally tipped to be aesthetically similar to the BlackBerry PlayBook, thanks to a shared ODM in the shape of Quanta, there’s talk that the Kindle Fire actually used RIM’s tablet as a template. Still, it’s software which will arguably be more important – or, to be precise, content – and the pipes are groaning with word of which publishers have lined up to be included in Amazon’s roster.

Amazon to unveil “Kindle Fire” tablet on Wednesday

Amazon sent out invitations last week for a press event this Wednesday and although the company did not specify the agenda, all speculation pointed to the unveiling of the much anticipated Amazon tablet. Amazon's Kindle tablet may be the most cloud-centric slate we've seen to-date, reports indicate, ironically making it perhaps the purest implementation of Google's cloud ambitions, despite the search giant reputedly having zero involvement in its development. Amazon has kicked off its library ebook lending scheme, offering Kindle books at over 11,000 libraries across the US. Ballmer: Metro iTunes app “welcome” if Apple inclined

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has said he hopes arch-rival Apple develops a Metro-style iTunes app for Windows 8, telling analysts that his company would "welcome" software support from device competitors. Ballmer specifically name-checked Apple and Amazon during the Q&A call, suggesting that although with Kindle and the upcoming Android-based Kindle tablet "they may have a device competitor, but they have certainly behaved like their fundamental business is the service." Kindle with Special Offers AmazonLocal trial kicks off in NYC

Amazon is adding AmazonLocal adverts to its Kindle with Special Offers, beginning with New York deals shown on the subsidized ereader's homescreen, and being extended to all AmazonLocal cities later in 2012. As with existing adverts, the AmazonLocal deals will be shown on the Kindle's display while it's not being used for reading, with purchases automatically charged to the Buy It Now card on account and users able to redeem the deal simply by showing their ereader. Amazon Prime ebook subscription in talks for Kindle tablet

Amazon is reportedly considering a subscription-based ebook service, in effect a Netflix-for-readers, which would charge an annual fee for content access. The scheme would initially be part of Amazon’s Prime scheme, customers of which currently get unlimited two-day shipping and streaming access to the retailer’s digital TV and movie library, the WSJ reports, although the response from publishers Amazon is in talks with has apparently been mixed.

Amazon Kindle tablet November launch looks increasingly likely

More signs of a November launch for the Amazon Kindle tablet, as supply chain checks suggest that the bulk order of touch panel controller ICs used in the upcoming 7-inch slate should be in the retailer's hands - or, at least, those of its assembly partner - by the end of that month. ILI Technology (aka Ilitek) is supplying Amazon with 5m controller ICs, the Commercial Times reports, expected to show up in the $250 tablet that the online retailer hopes will best Apple's iPad. Slew of domain name registrations hint next Kindle line will be named after elements

Over the last month or so there have been a slew of domain name registrations by Amazon using a proxy service that hint at the possible names for future products in the Kindle family. The first of the domains to be registered was KindleAir.com hinting at a thin and light eReader from Amazon. That domain was registered back in early August. Amazon has just registered a new domain name over the weekend that has spawned new speculation of interesting developments ahead for its Kindle e-reader. The KindleScribe.com domain was registered by Amazon.com Holdings on August 20 along with KindleScribes.com for good measure. Amazon Kindle iPad web-app bypasses store-link rules

Amazon has launched a new Kindle web-app, targeted at Apple’s iPad, and offering a workaround for the new limitations on in-app store links. The HTML5 app – found at read.amazon.com - can store ebooks directly to your iPad for offline reading, as well as offer tight integration to a custom version of the Kindle ebook store.
