If you’re only going to do one thing, you need to do it really, really well, so the stakes are high for Amazon’s 2015 Kindle Paperwhite. Slotting in-between the $79 Kindle and the well-esteemed - but, at $199, expensive - Kindle Voyage, the $119 Paperwhite now gets a 300 dpi E Ink screen not to mention new software intended to make reading more immersive. Question is, does the new Kindle suffer from middle-child syndrome, or has Amazon managed to eclipse not only its entry-level ereader but its flagship. too?

Amazon’s new Kindle Paperwhite features sharper screen, easy-to-read font

Amazon has just outed the latest version of its mid-range Kindle model, the Paperwhite, and it now has the single-best feature from the pricier Kindle Voyage model, while keeping its $119 price tag. The new Paperwhite has a 300 pixels-per-inch e-paper display, making text twice as sharp as the previous generation, and offering a reading experience that's much easier on the eyes. The new e-reader is available to order now, but Amazon says shipping will begin on June 30th.

Kindle gets Word Wise and Family Sharing update

Ebooks aren't the only thing Amazon's Kindle ereaders can get wirelessly, with the big online retailer pushing out new features to give extra insight into tricky words along with Family Library ebook sharing. Hitting the Kindle Voyage, $79 Kindle, and Kindle Paperwhite automatically over the next few weeks, the updated firmware enables Word Wise among other new tech, floating definitions over trickier words so that children and non-native-speakers can get a head-start on understanding without having to tap through to the regular dictionary.

Amazon has launched the Kindle Fire, Kindle Fire HD, and Kindle Paperwhite in Japan, alongside a new Japanese-language Kindle Store. Over 50,000 Japanese-language ebooks, plus over 15,000 manga titles, pad out the Amazon.co.jp Kindle Store, the company says, alongside English books as well, for a total of over 1m titles when the electronic store opens its virtual doors on Thursday.
