KDDI fuel cell for mobile phone offers plenty of talk time

I for one really look forward to the day when recharging my notebook or cell phone simply means squirting more fuel into its fuel cell rather than searching for an AC outlet. Fuel cells are coming for sure and a few of them are already on the market like the offering from Medis, though they aren’t quite what most of us want. What I want is a fuel cell like the one KDDI is showing off that is refillable with methanol and runs for up to 320 hours.

Firmly convincing us that the Japanese get not only the best toys but the best concepts too, this collaboration between carrier KDDI and Flower Robotics - the iida Polaris - has just drooling with envy.  Currently just a prototype - with "commercialization yet to be determined" - the iida Polaris has at its core a touchscreen cellphone which docks into a mobile robot "suit".

KDDI WiFi b/g microSD cards demonstrated

KDDI Corp have been showing off two microSD cards with integrated WiFi b/g in Japan this week.  Although SD cards with integrated WLAN are not uncommon - Eye-Fi is a good example of the technology, used to add wireless photo and video uploads to digital cameras and camcorders - it's more unusual to find the components sufficiently shrunk down to fit on a microSD card.

Sony Ericsson might not be having such financial troubles if they deigned to release handsets like the SE S001 in Europe and the US.  Freshly announced for Japanese network KDDI, the Sony Ericsson S001 has a huge 3.3-inch 480 x 854 AMOLED display, an 8.1-megapixel camera with autofocus, flash and smile-shutter control, mobile TV, high-speed internet and GPS, and is making me sob with envy.
