Apple Lets Rock bannerThe signs are out that Apple’s upcoming Tuesday event – titled “Let’s Rock” – is going to be a serious occasion on the Cupertino calendar.  While there’s still over a day to go before the show kicks off in San Francisco, the company has already hung a huge iPod banner down the side of the city’s Yerba Buena Center.

Featuring the same jumping silhouette as the iconic iPod adverts and the event invitation, the banner is the latest indication that Apple will be announcing new features in its PMP range.  Right now, the assumption is that we’ll see new iPod nano models and an update to the iPod touch line, but other suggestions include new iTunes functionality, an iPhone firmware 2.1 announcement and even a new subscription model for downloading music.  All we know for sure is that Apple themselves have been telling the media that Tuesday is a “big deal” and that they really ought to come.

I know I’m behind a bit here, but I finally got around to downloading and watching the web musical, Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog yesterday and it got me thinking. First of all, I was impressed. This is a web-only production with recognizable actors, original music and direction by Joss Whedon (the brain behind everything Buffy, Firefly, etc). Second, as if I needed any more evidence, Neil Patrick Harris is awesome as the villainous Dr. Horrible. (“Muahaha…ahahaha, so that’s you know, coming along”).

miShare have begun selling their eponymous iPod file transfer gadget, which promises to make exchanging songs between Apple’s PMPs as straightforward as hitting a button. Basically a compact box with two dock connectors, a single button and three LEDs, when hooked up between two compatible iPods (currently the Mini, Nano, 3G, 4G, Video 5G and Classic 6G) you can transfer songs, videos, playlists, photos or full photo albums. It’ll even exchange DRM-encrypted files, although it doesn’t actually crack the DRM.

There are tons of rumors flying around that are substantiated by little more than the fact that someone wrote them, that Blockbuster is working a new Set-Top Box to push movies out to. Some are calling it an Apple TV competitor, but I highly doubt it will be.

dutchiPodadRumors are going around, and ads in Apple’s Dutch iTunes store are sort of confirming, there might be an iPod Touch Price drop coming soon. On the Dutch iTunes ad the price drop was roughly 80 Euro, which is about $120, would you buy a new Touch if they cost $120 less?

Apple TV, the company’s wireless set-top box, has been updated so as to function without the need for a Mac, opening up the device to the thousands of potential users yet to invest (or unable to afford) one of Apple’s computers.  While iTunes content can be streamed direct to the Apple TV and enjoyed through a connected widescreen TV, owners now have the option to browse, research and buy TV shows, music and titles from the new movie rentals service direct from the set-top box itself.
