iphone shattersApple are reportedly beginning an investigation into the various cases where iPhones have exploded in Europe, a sensible tactic considering the spate of hissing, steaming and smashing smartphones we’ve heard of over the past few weeks.  The company maintains its belief that “these are isolated incidents and that there is not a general problem”, however.

The idea that an Apple tablet may not arrive in September and may in fact only be forthcoming in early 2010 seems pretty well accepted now, but according to one market research group we should be expecting two devices from the Cupertino company.  According to Richard Doherty of the Envisioneering Group, Apple have been working on two prototype tablets: one with a 6-inch touchscreen, which resembles a large iPod touch, and another with a bigger touchscreen.

TomTom’s PND app for the iPhone 3G and 3GS may already be splitting opinion among early reviewers, but we’re yet to see how the company’s dedicated car-kit fares.  Even if you pick one up and find you’re less than enamored with the TomTom app, the company has confirmed to Mac4Ever that not only does the mount have an integrated GPS receiver but that it is compatible with other PND apps.  They’ve also revealed that the iPod touch will work in the car-kit just like the iPhone 3G and 3GS.

Images purporting to be of the upcoming third-generation iPod touch have been spotted in the world, believed to be retrieved by a recycler of Apple tech after the company threw a prototype away.  Tipped as a “durability test” handset – hence the damage – the iPod touch 3G shows a camera lens mounted in the top middle of the rear panel, which certainly corroborates with leaked case designs we’ve seen before.

Zune HD

One of the reasons the iPhone and iPod Touch are so popular, is because of the hefty App Store. There has been some significant conversations out on the web about whether or not mobile media devices releasing from this point on will survive in the market without having their own version of Apple’s App Store, and now that Microsoft’s Zune HD is on the precipice of release, people are wondering whether or not the Zune HD can move on from being just another Personal Music Player (PMP), and navigate into the lucrative world of mobile media.

Having only been looking at Android MIDs the other day, here’s another to add to the roster.  An anonymous source sent Pocketables three images of an unnamed touchscreen device running Google’s open-source mobile OS, with nothing but the hint of integrated 3G, WiFi and a display between 4.3 and 5 inches in size.

itunes 9 social network integrationAccording to the latest BGR tipsters, the upcoming iTunes 9 upgrade promises more than just pinging social networks with what track you’re listening to.  Their source is suggesting that Apple are developing a “Social” application which will tap into iTunes’ functionality; this new app will consolidate multiple social networks, such as Facebook, Flickr and Twitter, and allow you to share music with those you are connected with.

Whether or not there’s PR leverage to be had in prematurely announcing your submission to Apple’s App Store approval process remains to be seen, but it does give us a sneak-peak as to what’s (hopefully) coming down the pipe.  Sling Media have tipped us on their latest iPhone and iPod touch app, SlingPlayer Mobile 1.1, which now includes full 16:9 widescreen support (i.e. that takes up the whole width of the display) and improved DISH Network integration.

apple tablet render piper jaffrayIt’s been a few months since we last heard Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster’s opinion on Apple’s much-rumored tablet, so happily the always-opinionated man is back with not only some pricing, sales and hardware predictions, but a slick render too.  According to Munster, his sources in Asia have tipped an unnamed manufacturer winning the contract from Apple to produce the touchscreen device, with fulfillment at the end of 2009; that, he says, underscores his previous assertions of an early 2010 launch.

ninjawords logoThe internet has been abuzz over the past few days over speculation that Apple demanded an iPhone dictionary app both censor itself and be classified 17+ under the App Store’s new age restriction guidelines.  Prime among their complaint about the Ninjawords dictionary app was that it gave access to “vulgar words”, which Apple’s app approval team highlighted in their feedback; the list was criticised for being relatively generic, and present in just about every dictionary.  According to Apple’s Phil Schiller, however, it wasn’t so much the words they mentioned, but the “offensive urban slang” – and, since Ninjawords is based on an editable wiki dictionary, the possibility for more such slang – the app also gave access to.
