iPod Touch vs Galaxy Player 5.0

Let’s be real here: the Samsung Galaxy Player is the first real competition for the iPod Touch since its inception, and although smartphones have far surpassed the specifications of either device, they’re here to battle one another, not anything else. What you’ve got here is a device, on the Samsung side, that’s not quite as large as the Galaxy Note, a device that’s still got a data connection, and isn’t nearly as small as the iPod Touch, which only comes in one size – that being a 3.5-inch display. So what will we compare? Sound quality? Pixel density? How about the ability to put the device in your pocket?

Gmail app for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch released

Google has released its official Gmail app for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, promising faster access to messages, better visibility of important emails, and a UI that’s designed from the ground up for a touch interface. As expected, the app supports push notifications and sounds, along with full inbox search, and on the iPad there’s a split-pane view which shows both inbox and message preview.

GarageBand for iPhone and iPod touch released

Apple has released GarageBand for the iPhone and iPod touch [iTunes link], bringing the popular music creation tool from the iPad to the company’s smaller iOS devices. Offering a range of keyboards, guitars, drums and basses, each supporting Smart Instrument custom chords so that those with less musical talent than they have ambition can still get involved, GarageBand also allows you to plug in external instruments and run them through the app’s amps and stompbox effects.

Siri iPhone 4 hack gets Apple server support

Apple disappointed many iPhone 4 owners with the news that Siri, the digital personal assistant technology, would only be available on the new iPhone 4S, and efforts quickly began to hack Siri onto the older smartphone. Developer Steve Troughton-Smith got the local app running with no problems, but faced Apple’s servers refusing to play ball with anything but the newest iPhone. Now, with the judicious application of some validation tokens from an iPhone 4S, it’s possible to get Siri on the iPhone 4 and iPod touch up and running, even without official support from Apple itself.

Apple may be planning to add customizable avatars to its iOS Game Center. It's something we've long seen with Microsoft's Xbox Live Avatars and Nintendo Miis, but Apple may soon be hopping on the bandwagon. The company has filed for two patents titled "Avatar Editing Environment" and "Personalizing Colors of User Interfaces," revealing the avatar customization interface that is in the works for iOS. Apple’s iOS 5 has been released, with owners of the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPad and iPad 2, along with the third- and fourth-gen iPod touch all getting the latest version of the mobile platform as a free update.
