Native Union has been pushing its corded handsets for smartphones for some time now, but the Curve Twin is perhaps the first we’d actually have on our desk. Hooking up a tactile, soft-touch wired handset to two devices – Native Union is pushing the idea of your iPhone and iPad, though anything with a 3.5mm jack will work – and then propping them up on a stand, the Curve Twin can flick between the lines at the push of a button.

That way, you can field incoming voice calls on your smartphone and VoIP calls on your iPad simultaneously, or indeed hook up a pair of regular phones or your laptop. The audio cables are spring-retractable, so tidy themselves up automatically, and there’s noise-reduction to improve audio quality.

The handset itself can be detached from the weighted base and plugged directly into a phone for more portable use, and there’s an optional USB adapter for devices without 3.5mm jacks. The only thing really missing is charging facilities; we’d like to have seen a way to easily rejuice your tablet and phone while they’re in place.

The Native Union Curve Twin is available now, in matte black or gloss white, priced at $59.99.

GEAR4 is back with another awesome iOS accessory and has just announced their Renew SleepClock will be hitting Apple’s retail stores in the US starting in March for just $199. Their alarm clock offers a few unique and special features that make that price seem not so high. They’ve added two sensors for monitoring breathing and movement, allowing the free iOS app to log sleep cycles.

The Renew SleepClock uses a non-contact sensor (as in no watches, or wristbands) to measure your breathing rates and movements. It knows when users are asleep and will measure your patterns and wake you up and the perfect moment. The SleepClock will pick the lightest moment in the users sleep cycle to alarm — making for a more relaxed wake period that will leave you alert and refreshed in the morning. No more needing 3 cups of coffee to start your day.

Their app will monitor patterns and you can check to see how well you are/aren’t sleeping at night. You can check these stats by the day or week and even compare against other SleekClock users. GEAR4 offers fading playlists to put you to sleep, and multiple settings for the alarm chime come morning. With sounds from the radio, iPod playlists, or even gentle and calming sounds are all available.

There really is an app for everything on the iPhone, that fact is reinforced to me all the time. If you are the sort that likes to dabble with electronics or repairs electronic items using a multimeter frequently and you have an iPhone a cool new multimeter has launched from Redfish Instruments. The multimeter is called the iDVM Multimeter and it is the first iPhone enabled multimeter that can capture, store and share data.

The wireless multimeter can connect to an app on your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad using an ad hoc wireless network. The signals that the multimeter picks up through its probes are then sent out to the iOS device, which is used as the display for the multimeter. The app shows the face with a knob on it as you see on most multimeter and the readings as well.

The multimeter can store data to the Apple device and then the data can be sent to other people for viewing or use in other projects. The data can also be tagged with the location at the time it was captured. That means if you have multiple sites you work the data can be tied to a site. The hardware portion of the meter is powered by a rechargeable battery. The app needed is free and the meter will ship on June 1 for $220.

The new features include a Web Locker Sync and blood pressure tracking tool. The company also notes that voice feedback in QuickStart workouts is coming in the next app update. The Digifit Connect 2 is a small ANT+ adapter that can record time intervals and offers voice feedback to help you guide your workouts for a specific heart rate in your target zone. It also offers updates on metrics like speed and distance.

The new AN T+ adapter is 60% smaller than the previous offering. The other new accessory is a water-resistant bike case for the iPhone and Digifit Connect receiver is built-in. The case lets the person riding a bike for workouts keep track of their workout data without fearing rain will kill their iPhone.

I have used Wrapsol film before and it was already pretty easy to install. The only tricky bit for me was to not fat finger the install and end up with a fingerprint on the adhesive that I have to look at forever. Wrapsol has announced that it has redesigned its film to make the install process easier.

The cool part about the redesign is that it gives you little tabs to hold onto as you install the film so you can align it easier and you don’t have to worry about leaving fingerprints behind. The user grabs the little application tabs, presses the film into place, and then peels the tabs off.

The improved application process will be on the Wrapsol ultra and clean protectors for the iPad and iPad 2. The iPhone 4 user can get it on the ultra front, back, side and the clear screen protector films too. The new application tabs will be added to additional products in the coming weeks.

I dropped my iPhone 3GS and cracked the screen about this time last year. It took me months to find an iPhone 4 in stock that I could upgrade too so I learned a deep appreciation for protecting my iPhone 4 with a case while using the cracked screen device. I want a case that protects and looks good though.

A new case has surfaced that may be a bit questionable on the good looks part, but the thing is certainly strong enough to protect the iPhone well. The case was made by Jon Eicher and is a hand built one off for right now that was offered on Etsy back over the weekend for about $99.

It reminds me a lot of the cool KarasKustoms case that I have for my iPhone, but the Military Grade is more robust looking with a solid back. The downside to this military Grade case is that it’s not as good looking as the KarasKustoms offerings to my eyes.

I really like quirky accessories for the mainstream gadgets that we all know and sometimes love. The iPhone is a device that tends to spawn all sorts of quirky accessories like the latest sticker for the back of the phone spied over on Laughing Squid.

The sticker adheres to the back of the iPhone 4 and makes your phone look like that Polaroid instant camera your mom had back in the day. I know we all remember that camera. What this sticker really needs is an app to go with it that makes that noise the Polaroid instant made when you hit the shutter button.

The sticker looks cool and has another use as well, it should prevent the glass back of your iPhone 4 from being scratched with use. This thing doesn’t appear to fit the 3G or 3GS devices with the rounded design and it leaves the flash and lens on the iPhone 4 uncovered.

If you drive and use your smartphone a lot you are asking for trouble and in many states and cities that can actually get you a ticket. You should be using a hands free device for calls and if you use that smartphone for navigation, you probably want a holder of some sort for the phone too.

A new holding clip has surfaced called GoSmart Clip. The thing has a design that should work with any smartphone, though the iPhone is what you see in the company’s photos and materials. GoSmart says that the Clip will work with smartphones between 4″ to 5″ tall and under 0.75″ thick. The company does say you need to remove any cases before using it.

The GoSmart clip is designed with a strap that wraps around the top portion of your steering wheel. It has a leather pad that actually sits against your wheel to help keep it from marring your wheel. The biggest problem I see is that the GoSmart Clip will block the speedo and tach on my car and probably on several others as well. You can pick it up in red or black colors for $25.95 and you can get two of them for $39.95. They will ship on December 1.

I missed the viral part of this video last week, but it’s funny nonetheless. The video on YouTube was of an actor that was supposed to be a student from MIT that had developed a hardware device for the iPhone hat turned the thing into a stun gun. The Stun Fone product was apparently picked up by all sorts of major outlets like CBS News, the Wall Street Journal and more.

I can say from the writer’s side of being tricked, that sort of thing can really piss off a writer. Some publications take geeks covering things that turn out to be fake very seriously, people can end up in trouble, and then there is the inevitable post to readers to tell them you were fooled. I have learned to loathe April over the years because companies tend to start posting fake products two weeks before and for the entire month after.

The fake product has supposed to make the iPhone into a 90,000 volt stun gun that could shock someone without really hurting them. The point of the campaign was to illustrate the power of a single idea according to the company behind it. All I can say is after getting fooled some outlets might be leery of anything that the company shows off in the future even if it is legitimate. Still, the product was interesting even if it was an utter lie. Check out the video below.

It allows the user to do credit card processing on the iPhone. The developer of the app has offered up a new hardware credit card scanner that is Apple-approved called Swiper for iPhone.

The credit card Swiper is designed like half of a case that the iPhone slips down into. The magnetic card reader on the bottom of the case is where the user would actually swipe a credit card. Using the app and the Swiper the user can process credit cards wherever they may be when the app is tied to a merchant account.

The seller will also save some money using the hardware Swiper rather than a just punching the credit card numbers into the Swipe for iPhone app. Swiped credit cards have a lower fee to sellers than typed in numbers. The Swiper will be offered as a white label solution.

Ten One Design unveiled its Pogo Stylus back not long after the original iPhone came out. There were many folks that wanted a stylus with the touchscreen, but your average stylus won’t work with the iPhone. Ten One designed a stylus that will work with any iPhone or the iPad and the company is now unveiling the latest version of the pogo Stylus with a special clip designed specifically for use with the iPhone 4.

The new stylus is just like the older stylus, the new cool is the clip. The clip will attach to the iPhone 4 with or without a silicone sleeve on the device or an Apple bumper. When you want to stand the iPhone 4 up to watch video or other content the clip can be easily removed.

Once removed, a slot in the clip will prop the iPhone 4 up in portrait or landscape mode. It will be perfect for making FaceTime calls or watching video in landscape mode. The new Pogo with the fancy clip can be purchased now in several colors for $14.95.

A case is something that most of you will need to protect our phones anyway so that in itself isn’t adding bulk for most of us. On the back of the case, it has a cool slot that can hold up to three ID cards or credit cards. That should mean you could get your credit card, drivers license, and one more thing inside the case.

If those few things are all you really need from your wallet, you can shed one more thing from your pocket. The case is only compatible with the iPhone 4 and it comes in black. It measures 4.53″ L x 2.43″ W x 0.61″ T and weighs 0.51 ounces. You can pre-order the Minimalist right now for $29.99.

The kickstand can prop the iPhone 4 up in portrait mode for FaceTime chats and in landscape mode for watching video. The stand also acts as a tripod for shooting photos using a timer. The plastic case is made from recycled materials and the ridged case should keep you from fouling your antenna with your touch.

The case measures in at 4.53″ L x 2.43″ W x 0.50″ thick and weighs 0.51 ounces. It only comes in black and has the Trtle Bot logo on the back in big white letters. The case can be pre-ordered right now for $29.99 and the exact ship date is unknown.

It’s no great secret that the hands-free kit Apple include in with the iPhone 4 isn’t much cop when it comes to audio performance, and that’s left plenty of room for third-party offerings promising aural loveliness at a range of prices. With an MRSP of $99.99 but a street price under $50, the Scosche IDR655m earphones promise “brilliant highs, silky smooth mids and powerful bass” together with the company’s tapLINE II control system. Check out the full SlashGear review after the cut.

In the box are the IDR655m earphones themselves, a choice of single- and double-flanged silicone earbuds in three sizes, a clip to pin the cable to your shirt or coat, and a travel pouch for when they’re not plugged into your iPhone. There’s a standard 3.5mm plug, so the audio and microphone will potentially work on non-iPhone handsets, but you probably won’t get the extra control functions Scosche bake in.

That’s a shame, as tapLINE II is half of what makes the IDR655m earphones special. The in-line control block has buttons for volume and play/pause or answering calls, but double-clicking the middle button skips the track forward and triple-clicking flicks back to the previous track. Holding the button down triggers VoiceOver voice control. The microphone is separate from the controller section, which means it can be closer to your mouth while leaving the buttons within easier reach.

Comfort-wise, the IDR655m’s are far easier on the ears than Apple’s regular buds. The silicone tips are on the right side of tenacious, without gripping painfully, and they’re light enough to wear while jogging and still be free from the fear that they’ll be tugged out. Scosche has used a flatter, nylon-wrapped cable that is more resilient to tangling, so it’s possible to whip them out of the pouch and be listening in seconds rather than having to spend five minutes unknotting them.

Unfortunately, that braided cable has a frustrating side-effect that rears its head whenever you’re moving. As it rubs against itself – and your clothes or bag – it sends vibrations all the way up and into your ears, and can prove seriously distracting if you’re listening to quieter music. It’s a shame, since the audio quality in general is decent: we wouldn’t argue with some extra bass, certainly, but the mid-range is pleasingly spaced and the trebles have the sort of sparkle you’d normally spend in the mid-$100s to achieve. Tweaking the iPhone’s EQ to over-emphasise the bass left things muddy: thumping, yes, but lacking definition.

In-call performance is also strong, with callers reporting clear audio from the IDR655m’s microphone. The earbuds do a decent job of cutting out environmental noise, too, though there’s no active noise cancellation.

At their full MRSP we’d be reserved in our enthusiasm about the Scosche IDR655 earphones; the market at the $100-mark is hotly contested, after all. Under $50, however, and they’re a far more tempting prospect. There are certainly earphones with better audio quality – particularly at the bass end – but you’re looking at nigh-on double the price for them, and in terms of the difference in performance above and beyond the standard Apple headset it’s night and day. The noise from the woven cord is worth bearing in mind if you generally listen to quieter, acoustic or classical music, mind. Still, for most iPhone owners it’s a decent upgrade and makes a world of difference from the out-of-the-box experience.

Back in the early days of mobile phones my dad had one of those fat brick phones. I remember the call quality was bad, but the thing was so big you could just bend your neck to talk without having to hold the phone to your ear.

You can’t do that with the iPhone unless you have a really flexible neck. A new case concept for the iPhone has surfaced called the Arkhippo. The case makes the iPhone majorly fat. The upside is you could probably comfortable hold the phone between your cheek and shoulder with the case on the iPhone.

The case has an angled back and bottom that is designed to let you stand the iPhone up or sit it in landscape mode. The concept measures 170mm H x 83mm W x 50mm D and is made from a material similar to that of Crocs shoes. I don’t think you could carry the phone in your pocket if you use this case.
