Tons of big-name companies make an appearance at CES every year, and while Microsoft backed out of this year’s show, there were still a bevy of companies that filled the void. LG, Sony, Qualcomm, Verizon, Samsung, Intel, and more, all stepped up to the plate to take Microsoft’s place, but one other big-name company that made an appearance at the show was Apple. They didn’t necessarily have a booth, or had any of their execs on the show floor, but their products were everywhere, and I’m not even exaggerating when I say such a thing.

A ton of the new products announced at CES were built for the iPhone or iPad — mostly accessories, mind you, but there were a ton of accessories lining the halls of the Las Vegas Convention Center, and while we covered a crap-ton of new accessories here at CES, there were still a truckload that we never got to. Company after company had new iPhone and iPad cases, like OtterBox, who unveiled new additions to their Armor and Defender series of cases, and Pelican, who introduced the ProGear Vault series. Olloclip showed off a new lens for the iPhone 5, Lifeproof had new cases and mounts, Cygnett had some custom cases for the iPhone 5, Belkin had a nifty speaker case for the iPad, and ONGUARD had fancy origami stands for Apple devices.

That doesn’t even begin to touch the surface, folks. Griffin introduced the StudioConnect iPad dock, as well as the Crayola Light Marker, which was made specifically for…you got it…the iPad. However, companies who didn’t have accessories to announce or sell were still showing off the Apple brand. Many companies demoed their new products with none other than iPhones and iPads, including Parrot with their AR.Drone 2.0, Liquipel with their water-resistant coatings, Harman with their Aha integration with Porsche, Tethercell with their smartphone-controlled batteries, SilverLit with their Mercedes RC cars, Martian with their Passport smartwatch, Belkin with their NetCam HD, and Ford with their in-car Sync technology. And finally, we also saw Corning release new Thunderbolt cables, Ion unveiled Scratch 2 Go for the iPad, and Behringer released a new line of speakers and audio equipment with AirPlay.

*Takes gasp of fresh air*

Other than all the companies showing off new products for Apple devices, and using iOS devices to demo various products, we also noticed the abundance of MacBooks being used in the press rooms at CES. Our team alone consisted of all MacBooks except for one team member, and we had an iMac back at our temporary headquarters that took care of any heavy video work.

Is all this Apple swag a bad thing? Of course it’s not — I think it goes to show just how much of an impact Apple products have had on a lot of people, and will continue to have. And while Apple isn’t directly participating in all of the CES festivities here in Sin City, their logo is plastered everywhere, and they’re not paying a dime for it. Companies want to spend money on things that are worthwhile and that have the biggest audience — the Samsung Galaxy S III was up there, but it was ultimately the iPhones and iPads that stood out in the end.

Pelican is mostly known for its line of rugged bags and large cases meant for photography equipment and other expensive belongings that you need to protect. However, the company has released a new line of smartphone cases here at CES 2013, and we ended up getting our hands specifically on the ProGear Vault cases for the iPhone 5 and the iPad mini.

The iPhone 5 variant offers protection from “wind-driven” rain, dust, and scratching. All the ports are protected with durable flaps that let the sound out (for the speakers), but don’t let dust in. The case also has insulating shock and impact protection, thanks to rubber shock absorbers inside the case.

The case is made out from a magnesium and high-grade polymer, and it’s held together using military-grade hex screws at the four corners. Acoustic membranes also prevent water access through the microphone speaker ports, without hindering the audio. The buttons on the side, as well as the silent switch, was a little difficult to press, but like most cases, added that extra layer will hinder some of the button performance. What’s odd about the iPhone 5 case, is that the silent switch on the case is actually a knob that you twist slightly to change it. It’s an interesting concept, and one that we don’t see very often.

The iPad mini version offers the same protection and technology as the iPhone 5 case, and it features a flap door cover that can be opened up and used as a kickstand. The iPad mini case is actually still a very early prototype, and the cover actually didn’t even close all the way when we tested it. Nonetheless, both the iPhone 5 case and the iPad mini case are planned for an April or may release. Both cases will be priced between $75 and $85 when they eventually launch.

OtterBox is making a big appearance here at ShowStoppers during CES 2013, and they unveiled their new Armor series of smartphone cases. The company is known for durable and indestructible cases, and the Armor series definitely skimp on that. In fact, the Armor series is OtterBox’s most toughest case yet, and we ended up getting our hands on the new case.

OtterBox says that new Armor series case is waterproof, drop proof, dust proof, and crush proof. It can withstand water as deep as 6.6 feet for up to 30 minutes before it’ll give. It’s drop proof from up to 10 feet and it can withstand up to 2 tons of pressure. Plus, completely dust proof, and the company says that “zero” dust will get into your phone.

Actually, the phone is so dust proof that they put screens over the speaker ports so that sound will still come out of the phone, but no dust will get inside. We have to say that it’s really impressive, and users who want complete protection of their phone will no doubt benefit from OtterBox’s new Armor series case.

The case will be available for the iPhone 4/4S, iPhone 5, and the Samsung Galaxy S III. Technically, OtterBox says that the case is still a prototype, but it’s “very close” to being a finished product. It’ll be available starting February 22 at a reasonable price of $99.

OtterBox is here at ShowStoppers at CES 2013, and they’re just unveiling some new, updated iPhone cases. The Defender series is the company’s most popular product, and they just revealed an updated version that comes with an extra battery, as well as an accompanying mobile app that provides a user interface for monitoring the extra battery.

The case provides the same great protection that the Defender series has always provided, but this updated version, which OtterBox is still calling a prototype, comes with some extra new features, including an extra 1450mAh battery, which will provide double the power of the iPhone 4/4S, which comes with a 1440mAh battery on the inside.

The case also has ten LED indicators on the front, and each one represents 10% of the battery life, and clicking a button below the LEDs will turn on the indicators for a couple of seconds so that you can see what level the external battery is at without having to open up the OtterBox app.

Speaking of the app (which was built by Fueled), OtterBox introduces iON Intelligence technology with this new Defender case. The app tells you how much juice you have left in both your iPhone and the external OtterBox battery, and will automatically determine when your iPhone battery needs more juice. Again, this is still an experimental sample, so some things may change, but the company said that we should expect it to arrive before the summer.

People who have a fear of being separated from their iPhones can pretty much rest easy with the iGills SE-35 waterproof case, for those moments you need to go diving to depths of 40 minutes with an iPhone. The polycarbonate case actually turns any iPhone into an underwater video camera or still camera and can keep track of how long you need before it’s time to get back to the surface.

The case is built with a reinforced glass lens porthole on the back of it and also features depth and temperature sensors. Of course, the fact that you can’t use the touchscreen at 40 feet underwater is a bit of an inconvenience, which is why the iGills comes with a set of its own buttons to be used to operate its all-in-one app for depth and temperature measurement.

With it, you can track depth, time spent underwater, levels of nitrox to ensure safe returns to the surface and you can even set up alarms for oxygen supply level alerts. To make it all work, you have to actually pre-program the app with the details before you set off to go diving since it has no way of being tied into your diving equipment or oxygen tank. The iGills is available on its official site for a price of $330.

The case features three lenses on a dial that easily rotate into place for immediate photo effects.

The iPhone Lens Dial offers a telephoto, fisheye, and wide-angle lens, a perfect trio for most of your casual phone photography needs. The 1.5x telephoto lens is great for long-distance shots while the 0.7x wide-angle lens takes in a lot more scenery into your frame for nice panoramic shots. And the 0.33x fisheye gives you those fun concave-looking creative shots.

The lenses are all made from “optical-quality” coated glass while the case itself is slim and made from aircraft-grade aluminum. It also features two tripod mounts to work in either landscape or portrait mode. The Photojojo iPhone Lens Dial is available now for $249.

It looks like Belkin has a handy gadget for iPhone users on the way that will really let you take advantage of the upgraded 8-megapixel optics on that shiny new iPhone 4S for group photos and self-portraits. The device is called the Belkin LiveAction Camera Remote and it has just made a visit to the FCC.

The Belkin LiveAction Camera Remote lets you take both photos and videos with your iPhone remotely, featuring a dedicated button for each function. It also packs a small stand that you can detach to prop up your iPhone to just the right angle, but it’s hard to tell how secure it would be given its small size.

The device connects to your iPhone via Bluetooth and works with Belkin’s LiveAction camera app, which you can download from iTunes for free. Pictures of the device showed up at the FCC today, but there’s no word on pricing or availability just yet.

Mophie launched the Juice Pack Plus iPhone 4 protective case and battery extension back in May and now it’s offering a new Outdoor Edition that comes bundled with some handy extras. And since the exterior design of the iPhone 4S hasn’t changed, you’ll be able to use this case for either version of the Apple smartphone. It might just be a good idea to get a battery extender like this one given the battery issues plaguing the iPhone 4S.

The Mophie Juice Pack Plus Outdoor Edition bundle features a case with a special orange and gray color and comes with a one-year subscription for the Mophie Outdoor GPS app that covers the continental US and Hawaii. You also get a one-year subscription to the Mophie Outdoor Edition website, which helps you plan your trips. After the first year’s complimentary subscription, the service costs $19.99 a year.

The case incorporates a 2,000mAh battery that is said to more than double your iPhone’s normal battery life. This means potentially adding up to six hours of GPS usage, up to 8 hours of 3G talk time, up to 7 hours of 3G internet use, or up to 11 hours of video playback. A toggle switch allows you to put the case on standby so that you only use the Juice Pack Plus battery when you need to. And it features four LED indicators to keep you informed of battery levels.

The Outdoor Edition bundle is available now for $119.95 from Mophie’s product page.

It turns out that the leaked images of some Otterbox phone cases yesterday are not for the iPhone 4S or iPhone 5. The phone accessories maker was contacted today after they posted a new banner that reads: “iPhone 4S or iPhone 5? Yes.” This message seemed to suggest that Apple will indeed be launching two iPhone models come October, but Otterbox clarified that that’s not necessarily the case.

TUAW contacted Kelly Richardson of Otterbox regarding the banner and the leaked case images, to which she explained that the images were of prototype packaging, but that the cases contained within were not for the iPhone 4S. It’s still unclear as to how those images leaked though.

And as for the banner, Richardson explained that the message was merely to reflect the current speculations going around in the blogosphere and that Otterbox would support both models should they be released.

“We’re not even quite sure ourselves,” said Richardson. “Like many, we are watching the rumor sites and using information to plan ahead as much as we can. We do not have any confidentiality agreements with Apple.”

Images have leaked from the prolific accessories maker Case-Mate that suggest the iPhone 5 will indeed have a radical new design. The images show renderings of case designs that support a lot of the rumors surrounding the next-gen iPhone. The company has been designing cases for the iPhone ever since the original launched on AT&T, so they’re more likely privy to some insider info.

The Case-Mate renderings show the next-gen iPhone with a slimmer profile and rounded, tapered edges. It also shows that the backing, which is peeking out from the cases’ camera openings is aluminum, which again aligns with previous reports. The overall shape of the cases look very similar to what we’ve seen in previously leaked case designs from other third-party accessories makers.

We’ll likely be seeing more leaks like this as we approach the launch date for the iPhone 5, which is rumored for an unveiling on October 7 and shipping October 15. The major software update with iOS 5 and the iCloud is expected to launch on the next-gen iPhone with recent reports suggesting a roll out of the update to current iPhones starting October 10.

I know that many people out there take photos on their iPhone, and I know a few people that shoot photos on the camera more than they do anything else. The bulk of those photos end up on Facebook. I think everyone that has an iPhone needs to have it in a case to keep it from breaking if they drop it. The case will also prevent your skin from killing the signal strength too. This case called the HipstaCase makes your iPhone look like on old school camera.

The case has a mounting bracket that adds a universal tripod adapter. The tripod you see in this photo isn’t included with the case. The tripod appears to be one from Joby in the photo. The round a part that looks like a lens is always on the case and the attachment for the tripod mount goes under that from what I can tell.

The case also has a wrist strap to help keep you from dropping the iPhone and that strap can help you stabilize the camera for photos. The case sells for $39.95 and will be offered to fit the iPhone 4 and the iPod touch. It will ship on May 5, and it leaves all the controls and sensors uncovered for access.

We like a good concept product around here and a cool one has turned up over on Yanko Design today. The concept combines old school with new high tech gear in a way that looks modern and retro at the same time. The device is a handmade turntable that is constructed from wood and has an aluminum turntable for your old vinyl records. The concept reminds me of a giant turntable that my mom had when I was a kid in the 70′s.

The left side of the concept is the shiny turntable that looks cool and the other side has a dock that you can plug your iPhone into. The concept has tech that would take those vinyl records, encode them to MP3 format, and shoot them over to your iPhone to take with you on the go. The designer also would put an amp and speakers inside for room filling sound.

Presumably, you would be able to play your MP3 tunes back over the device too so you can jam to your iPhone if you want rather than your vinyl. The concept was designed by Oliver Meynard. I am sure he would like to see the thing come to stores near you, but as with all concepts that isn’t likely to happen. I wonder if the actual physical prototype the guy built works at all, or if it is just to look at.

I really like my gear to look different from the other stuff that my friends have. I can appreciate the cool factor that comes with being able to see what gear looks like on the inside, yet covered leaving it protected with some sort of clear plastic. This is the reason that many gamers buy cases for computers with windows in the side. It’s cool to see the hardware that makes things operate.

iFixit is mostly know for tearing up gadgets that we would all like to own just to see what’s inside. The latest teardown came just this morning when they ripped the Nikon D5100 DSLR apart. The company has in the past ripped apart every iPhone model that has been made too. That means that if you want to pick up this cool clear back panel for the iPhone 4 that iFixit offers you can get the instructions for installing it from the site as well.

The clear back case for the iPhone 4 is cheap at $29.95. It fits the GSM AT&T version of the iPhone only and is product code IF182-021-1. I wonder if they will have one for the Verizon iPhone 4 in the future. I would like to have an iPhone 4 that is clear all around, not just on the back panel. You can order one of these covers right now if you are comfortable with voiding warranties.

A Japanese company called Hanwah has pulled out a new adapter for the iPhone 4 and the iPad that you can attach to the charge and sync port on your gadget. The adapter is the UMA-iOSHDMI and it adds a HDMI output and USB port to your iOS gadget.

This adapter will let you shoot video and other content out to your big screen TV or any other device with a HDMI input. The HDMI port allows you to shoot content out to the TV in up to 1024 x 768 resolution. That is the resolution of the iPad screen. You can also use the adapter to view content from your digital camera on the iPad screen as well.

That might make sharing your digital photos a bit easier when you don’t have a larger screen device around. The adapter measures 63mm x 38mm x 14mm. It also has a miniUSB port on the bottom and a switch that you flip to control if the USB or HDMI port is active. That mini USB port allows you to charge your device while it plays content. The adapter sells for 5,980 yen in Japan.

I once had a dog that we dressed in a fake leather jacket for Halloween. He pissed all over that jacket the second it came off, which I thought was rather telling of how he felt about being dressed up. If you buy this denim jacket case for your iPhone, your dog will be embarrassed for your phone and the fact that his owner is so lame he has a phone jacket.

The jacket is made for denim and has a top to bottom length of 4.5-inches and it is 3.5-inches wide. This blue jacket of fail is sized to fit Blackberry, iPhone, and other smartphones. It appears to have a strap for carrying as a purse made from belt loop material.

The only upside of this jacket is that it has already sold sparing any pets and other people from seeing you use this thing. Whoever purchased this has a karmic kick in the jewels coming. If you have no taste and a penchant for being made fun of the maker may have more.

I am not traditionally a case user on my iPhone because I like the thing to be as thin and compact as possible. After dropping my 3GS and breaking the screen and upgrading to the new iPhone 4 with twice the glass to break, I am using a case all the time. If you are looking for a cool case that has functionality built in, iKit has a new offering that may be perfect for you.

The new case is called the iPhone 4 Chrome Flip case and has a little kick stand on the back to prop the iPhone 4 up on a flat surface for more comfortable watching. I like to watch YouTube videos while waiting in front of my kid’s school in the afternoon so this case will be perfect for that sort of use. I can prop the iPhone on the dash rather than looking down at the phone.

The case has a metallic chrome finish and comes in silver, pink, and blue colors. The blue is a very pale and pastel color making the only real guy color the chrome one. Each of the cases is $34.95 and they are available right now.

When I was 11, I was more interested in the cute girl next door and video games than designing any sort of product. Then again, if something as cool as the iPad or iPhone had been around when I was a kid, I might have been more interested. An 11-year-old kid named Dino Zaharakis has invented a cool stand for the iPad and one for the iPhone.

The stand was designed after Dino’s dad challenged him to design a better iPad stand with the promise of a new phone if he could do it. Dino and his pop went to a local college and worked up a 3D model of the DZDock and the rest is history. The DZDock is really cool and allows you to dock the iPad or iPhone without having to unplug the charge and sync cable.

The anodized stands are offered in black, white, silver, red, pink, lime, and blue for $29.99. The dock is designed to work with just about any product out there and will work with devices in portrait or landscape modes. The normal price is $29.99, but a special code will save you $10 on that price. The code is DZPRNEWS.

For each generation of iPhone, there’s been a Mophie Juice Pack to bolster its battery. Apple may have refined its smartphones’ power requirements over each generation, but getting a full day’s use has often been beyond most app-addict users. The iPhone 4 certainly has longer-legs than its predecessors, but Mophie’s promise to “virtually double” runtime with the new Juice Pack Air is appealing all the same. Check out the full SlashGear review after the cut.

As with previous versions, the new Juice Pack Air for iPhone 4 takes the form of a case for the smartphone. Gone are the curvy edges of before, replaced by squared off sides like the iPhone 4 itself; only the bowed back panel suggests the heft of the battery inside. The case measures 5.07 x 2.51 x 0.68 inches and adds 2.5oz to the smartphone; it has cutouts for the volume buttons, ringer switch, headphone socket and sleep/power button, together with a hole at the back for the camera and flash. However there’s no docking connector cutout, with the bottom edge of the Juice Pack Air instead having a button and four LEDs to indicate battery status. A physical power switch on the bottom corner rounds out the main controls.

Recharging is via the bundled microUSB cable, which also charges the iPhone 4 itself and allows you to sync it with your PC or Mac. Fitting the smartphone involves pulling off the top edge of the case, sliding the iPhone 4 in, and then replacing the panel. Mophie has added a “virtual speaker box”, which basically redirects audio from the iPhone’s speaker on the bottom edge out the front of the case. It’s a simple idea, but it does make for louder music playback. The back panel is covered in soft-touch rubber, leaving it grippy, and there’s a (non-metal) band running around the edge to mimic the iPhone 4′s own design.

The iPhone 4 has a 1,420 mAh battery which Apple rates for up to 7hrs of 3G talktime (14hrs 2G), up to 6hrs of 3G browsing (or 10hrs over WiFi), up to 10hrs of video playback, or up to 40hrs of audio playback. In practice, and with typical mixed use, we can get through a day of push-email, Twittering, GPS use, browsing and media playback between charges. That’s a decent improvement over the iPhone 3GS, it’s worth noting.

Mophie claim that the Juice Pack Air for iPhone 4 boosts talktime by up to 6hrs over 3G (12hrs 2G), up to 5hrs of 3G browsing (9hrs over WiFi), video playback up to 9hrs, and audio playback up 36hrs. That’s on top of what the Apple smartphone can manage on its own, of course. It’s obvious from the outset that those figures aren’t quite twice those of the bare iPhone 4, hence Mophie’s promise to “virtually” double longevity.

We fully charged both the Juice Pack Air and the iPhone 4, and set out to test them with a normal day’s use. By the end of the first day, when we’d normally be plugging in for an overnight charge – still with some power on the battery gauge, but generally not enough to get through the whole night and leaving you with a drained iPhone 4 in the morning – we left the smartphone unplugged. Both finally reached the end of their charge late in the afternoon on the second day.

With some clever use, of course, you can extend that a little longer. The Mophie has a dedicated power switch, allowing you to keep its power in reserve for when you actually need it. If you’re away for the weekend, for instance, and don’t want to take your iPhone charger (or won’t have access to AC power) you can run the handset on the first day from its own battery, and then save the Juice Pack Air for the second day. By turning it off overnight you’ll see just a few hours short of what the iPhone 4 alone could manage.

For $79.95, we’re happy with that sort of extra runtime – not to mention the added protection of the case. Yes, it adds bulk to the iPhone 4, but the payoff is more obvious than some rugged cases we’ve seen that do nothing more than cushion the smartphone from knocks and scrapes.
