iPhone explodes in holiday sales as Nokia struggles to penetrate

Nokia's multi-million efforts to push its Windows Phone based Lumia 800 still hasn't resulted in strong holiday sales, according to the latest UK stats, with Apple's iPhone continuing to dominate the mobile market. Although the newest iPhone 4S was an unsurprising success, sales tracking firm GfK says, the aging iPhone 3GS still managed to make it into the top 15 handsets chart despite dating back to mid-2009. Facebook for iPhone gets Timeline; iPad update “soon”

Facebook for iPhone has been updated to support Timeline, bringing the iOS app up to speed with its Android and mobile web cousins. The new v4.1 app, a free download [iTunes link], works on both iPhone and iPod touch, though an iPad version is still in the pipeline. and brings the visual history of your Facebook engagements - and those of your friends - to the smartphone screen. iPhone 4 Siri port made legally possible by Apple with iOS 5.0.1 update today

Earlier today we reported that Apple's iOS 5.0.1 update today was the first iPhone 4S firmware build that’s both official and has an accessible encryption key for its main file system, thus meaning that browsing the device’s main file system with your PC is now possible. From a later tweet by iOS hacker @MuscleNerd, it seems that Apple has made a Siri port legally possible with today’s iOS 5.0.1 update by offering open access to system files that were previously encrypted. Samsung beats iPhone in consumer buzz

Nokia's suggestions that the iPhone may be falling from fashion-grace could be correct, though it seems Samsung's Android devices not the Finn's new Lumias are the buzz beneficiaries. New research into "consumer perception" by stats firm YouGov suggests Samsung has edged ahead of the Cupertino smartphone when it comes to being at the forefront of peoples' minds, a finding that's attributed to Samsung's snarky adverts. Kinectimals for iPhone and iPad released

Microsoft has released Kinectimals for iOS, a version of its Kinectimals on Kinect for Xbox 360 game, working as both a standalone title and as a way of accessing new content in the console version. Available for $2.99 in the iOS App Store, the game runs on the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad; it has already been available through the Windows Phone Marketplace since late October. Motorola scores Apple iPhone/iPad injunction in Germany [Updated]

Motorola Mobility has won a wireless patent case against Apple in Germany this morning, meaning – unless Apple can secure a stay until an appeal can be heard – the iPhone and iPad could be blocked from sale in the country. A Germany court ruled that Apple’s cellularly-enabled devices infringe European Patent 1010336, detailing a “method for performing a countdown function during a mobile-originated transfer for a packet radio system” FOSS Patents reports, and deemed an essential component of the GPRS data standard. Motorola will have to cough up a €100m bond if it wants to chase a sales injunction, however.

AT&T begins throttling heavy iPhone data usage to 2G speeds

AT&T has reportedly started throttling its heaviest data users (to be exact, the top 5% of its data users) to, well, 2G speeds. 

According to CultofMac, AT&T has been alerting customers of their data throttling move by way of a particularly terse text message, which says "Your data usage is among the top 5 percent of users. Data speeds for the rest of your current bill cycle may be reduced." And is punishing those top 5 percent of users with a woefully plodding, snail-moving 2G speed. Read The Full Story

OnLive hits iOS and Android with phone/tablet cloud gaming

OnLive has launched its smartphone and tablet cloud gaming apps for iPhone, iPad and Android, bringing console-class gaming to WiFi and 3G/4G mobile devices with an optional wireless controller. This updated control pad uses what OnLive calls “adaptive wireless” to automatically find the best connection with your TV, PC, Mac, Blu-ray player, smartphone or tablet, and will go on sale on December 9 at $49.99/£39.99. H1Siri hack prompts privacy and stability complaints

Concerns around an unofficial Siri port for the iPhone 4 and iPod touch have escalated, with some users reporting device instability, their camera no longer functioning and other issues, in addition to concerns around data privacy. The H1Siri hack came to light earlier this week, offering an unofficial way to access Apple's Siri virtual personal assistant tech on older devices; that port, iPhone modder Grant "chpwn" Paul points out, illegally uses copyrighted binaries extracted from the iPhone 4S. Report shows that iPhone 4S now more popular than iPhone 4

An overwhelming majority of iPhone 4S owners are “very satisfied” with their new Apple device, and in particular, of the onboard Siri Digital Assistant. According to a new survey released by ChangeWave Research, 77 percent of iPhone 4S owners reported being "very satisfied" with their purchases, with Siri at the top of the list of most-enjoyed features. The survey also showed that customer satisfaction ratings for the latest Apple iPhone are higher than that of its predecessor, the iPhone 4. iPhone 4S buyers overwhelming happy; missing 4G a pain point

iPhone 4S buyers are more content with their smartphone than iPhone 4 buyers were after that handset's 2010 launch, according to a new survey, with Siri most cited as the best feature of the iOS device. 77-percent of iPhone 4S owners told consumer research firm ChangeWave that they were "very satisfied" with the handset, with 19-percent saying they were merely "somewhat satisfied"; only 2-percent of those questioned had drifted out of the honeymoon period and reported that they were dissatisfied. Nokia denies Carrier IQ tracking; iPhone code spotted but Nexus clean

Nokia has denied reports that its cellphones and smartphones contain code from Carrier IQ, the mobile analytics company accused of logging keypresses, text entry and other use across a huge number of handsets. “CarrierIQ does not ship products for any Nokia devices” a Nokia spokesperson told SlashGear, describing reports otherwise as “inaccurate.” However, evidence of at least some potential Carrier IQ tracking has been identified in Apple iOS devices, while Google’s Nexus range is believed to be code-free.
