Everything appears to be turning up Apple as a couple of reports from analysts NPD Group and IDC find both that the iPhone 4 and the iPhone 3GS were the top two selling mobile phone handsets in the USA in the third quarter of 2011 while their operating system, Apple's iOS, has been found to be the number one result on developer's interest lists. You can't deny that Apple's interest in mobile devices has and continues to be one where a near-perfect hardware and sales model appears to have been the key to success. Apple: “No plans” for Siri on older devices

Apple has reportedly confirmed to developers that it has "no plans" to bring Siri, the voice-controlled personal assistant service available on the iPhone 4S, to any older device. Arguing that developers would attempt to implement unofficial access to Siri on iPhone 4, iPad 2 and other earlier iOS devices, one coder contacted Apple with a suggestion that it release a paid upgrade for users to get official Siri support, Michael Steeber reports. Apple Store app adds EasyPay and in-store pickup

Apple has updated its iOS “Apple Store” app [iTunes link] with support for EasyPay and Personal Pickup, the company’s new, streamlined ways to buy shiny Apple kit. As expected, EasyPay allows users of the app to scan product barcodes in-store, read reviews on their iPhone and then charge the items directly to the credit card associated with their iTunes account.

We've previously seen Apple's much raved about Siri intelligent assistant feature hacked to work on an iPhone 4, but now developers have managed to hack the feature to work on an old iPhone 3GS. iOS 5.0.1 beta fixes battery woes, enables iPad gestures

Apple's iOS 5.0.1 beta - seeded to developers yesterday - not only promises to address the iOS 5 battery life issues many owners have experienced, but also fixes some of the more vocally complained about problems for the iPad and iPad 2. Original iPad owners discovered that the full release of iOS 5 removed the gesture support present in the beta version, something which has now been added back in with iOS 5.0.1, MacRumors reports. Gmail app for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch released

Google has released its official Gmail app for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, promising faster access to messages, better visibility of important emails, and a UI that’s designed from the ground up for a touch interface. As expected, the app supports push notifications and sounds, along with full inbox search, and on the iPad there’s a split-pane view which shows both inbox and message preview.

Apple has released GarageBand for the iPhone and iPod touch [iTunes link], bringing the popular music creation tool from the iPad to the company’s smaller iOS devices. Offering a range of keyboards, guitars, drums and basses, each supporting Smart Instrument custom chords so that those with less musical talent than they have ambition can still get involved, GarageBand also allows you to plug in external instruments and run them through the app’s amps and stompbox effects.

Siri iPhone 4 hack gets Apple server support

Apple disappointed many iPhone 4 owners with the news that Siri, the digital personal assistant technology, would only be available on the new iPhone 4S, and efforts quickly began to hack Siri onto the older smartphone. Developer Steve Troughton-Smith got the local app running with no problems, but faced Apple’s servers refusing to play ball with anything but the newest iPhone. Now, with the judicious application of some validation tokens from an iPhone 4S, it’s possible to get Siri on the iPhone 4 and iPod touch up and running, even without official support from Apple itself.

Verizon: 2m iPhone 4 sales, iPhone 4S demand still huge

Verizon has announced its Q3 2011 financial results, confirming that around two million iPhone 4 handsets were activated during the three month period, and revealing that first-day iPhone 4S sales were so strong that the carrier still lacks stock. Of the 5.6m smartphones Verizon sold in Q3, over half ran Android; that contrasts with AT&T's figures from earlier in the week, where the iPhone continued to monopolize smartphone sales.
