Apple have just announced that there have been an impressive two billion downloads from the App Store for iPhone and iPod touch.  The breakthrough comes roughly two and a half months after Apple notched up the 1.5bn mark back in July, a year after the App Store opened its virtual doors for the first time.  There are currently in excess of 85,000 applications on offer, with Apple boasting 125,000 developers in their iPhone Developer Program.

Now, before someone feels obligated to tell us that this isn’t real and is merely an animation, we do realise that there’s no software in the App Store that can actually transform your iPhone 3GS into a dinky netbook.  Still, our love of time-consuming fan renders and Transformer-style videos leaves us honor-bound to mention Manuel Eder’s marvellous video of Apple’s smartphone doing just that.

It’s not quite as exciting as a motorized head-up display, but Bionic Eye for the iPhone 3GS does at least save you from squeezing into some Lycra and leaping aboard the nearest push-bike.  Currently available in the App Store, Bionic Eye is another augmented reality (AR) app which overlays information about the immediate environment onto a real-time camera view.  In this case, it uses a POI database including restaurants, WiFi hotspots, subway stations and more.

The addition of a digital compass to the iPhone 3GS has turned it into an essential city navigation tool for many pedestrians, but what if you’re more commonly found on a bike?  Japanese firm Ubiquitous Entertainment have put together a prototype called iPhone ARider, which uses a retractable head-mounted display and a 3GS to show live navigation to a biker.

Apple iPod touch 3G Review

By Ewdison Then on Tuesday, Sep 22nd 2009 No Comments

Apple surprised many people at their recent iPod launch event by focusing on the iPod nano rather than their flagship touchscreen PMP, the iPod touch.  Still, they saved a little magic for the third-generation model, including a lower starting price and some games-focused speed boosts higher up in the range.  Does the iPod touch 3G stay ahead of the pack, or did Apple miss a trick by not tweaking further?  Check out our review after the cut.

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings has confirmed that the company does not see its movie streaming service as remaining exclusively locked to Microsoft’s Xbox 360 console, and that one day they envisage access from every games console, Blu-ray player and internet-connected TV.  Speaking to Reuters this week, Hastings also suggested that an iPhone Netflix service was “likely to come over time”, though the company’s focus is not yet on mobile.

Apple's latest iPhone OS, version 3.1, may bring along with it Genius recommendations for applications and ringtone downloads, but it also takes away tethering functionality with non-Apple-partner carriers.  While that may not come as a great surprise, given Apple's dislike of jailbroken and unofficially unlocked iPhones, the new firmware also blocks tethering for those using "official" unlocked handsets.

Apple’s iPod touch 3G may be “the funnest iPod ever” now that Steve & Co have decided it’s a hardcore gaming machine, but it looks like they may have some competition from Nokia.  One of the N900’s less publicized features is its TV output, which can be used to play the preinstalled games – Global Race and Bounce – on a bigger display.  Maemo-Guru shot some footage of the N900 doing its gaming thing, and it certainly looks promising.
