Google have added push-Gmail support to their Google Sync client, meaning Windows Mobile and iPhone users can now receive their new messages as they arrive, rather than when their handset is set to periodically check.  The new email addition joins the existing contacts and calendar sync.

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings has confirmed that the company does not see its movie streaming service as remaining exclusively locked to Microsoft’s Xbox 360 console, and that one day they envisage access from every games console, Blu-ray player and internet-connected TV.  Speaking to Reuters this week, Hastings also suggested that an iPhone Netflix service was “likely to come over time”, though the company’s focus is not yet on mobile.

Nitrox didn’t just bring along their latest Bluetooth devices for us to look at today; they also had a new leather battery-case for the iPhone 3G.  Like the Mophie Juice Pack that we rate so highly, the Nitrox iconn+ promises to roughly runtime thanks to its integrated 1,200mAh Li-Ion battery; however unlike the Mophie, the iconn+ has a flap-down leather cover that protects the smartphone’s display.

Apple's latest iPhone OS, version 3.1, may bring along with it Genius recommendations for applications and ringtone downloads, but it also takes away tethering functionality with non-Apple-partner carriers.  While that may not come as a great surprise, given Apple's dislike of jailbroken and unofficially unlocked iPhones, the new firmware also blocks tethering for those using "official" unlocked handsets.

rhapsody on iphone 329x500It’s obviously a week for mobile music, as Rhapsody has become the latest media streaming app to land on the iPhone [iTunes link].  Promising to do for US Apple customers what Spotify on iPhone has done in Europe, the new application offers its 8 million tracks over WiFi or mobile; however, unlike Spotify it’s unable to play music when offline, using cached versions of songs.

Like the European service, Rhapsody on iPhone demands a monthly subscription – in this case, Rhapsody To Go, which costs $15 per month.  There’s a week’s free trial included when you download the app initially, which is something Spotify foolishly didn’t include, and tracks are streamed in 64kbps quality.

iphone spotifySpotify have released both their iPhone and Android mobile apps, a little over a week after Apple approved it in late August.  Premium subscribers to the streaming music service will now be able to access Spotify’s catalog on their iPhone, iPod touch, or any of the Android devices currently available.  The app also supports offline playback, where tracks are cached in the background and thus can be played back even when there is no network connection, particularly useful for iPod touch owners.

Unlike streaming radio, Spotify allows users to search from their database of tracks and put together custom playlists.  The desktop version of the service has both ad-supported free and paid “premium” versions (which do not have adverts), but only the latter group will be able to use the mobile client.
