Apple's latest iPhone OS, version 3.1, may bring along with it Genius recommendations for applications and ringtone downloads, but it also takes away tethering functionality with non-Apple-partner carriers.  While that may not come as a great surprise, given Apple's dislike of jailbroken and unofficially unlocked iPhones, the new firmware also blocks tethering for those using "official" unlocked handsets.

Mention of a new device in the latest beta of iPhone OS 3.1 has prompted further speculation that Apple’s much-rumored tablet will run the mobile platform rather than a full build of OS X.  The device – listed as iProd1.1 – was spotted in the USBDeviceConfiguration.plist file, complete with a new product ID.

The iPhone Dev Team may have held off on releasing their ultrasn0w iPhone 3GS jailbreaking and unlocking tool, but that hasn’t stopped long-time Apple hacker George Hotz.  He’s released a tool called purplera1n which, while not unlocking the iPhone 3GS, does at least jailbreak it so that unofficial third-party apps can be installed.

If you have not upgraded to iPhone OS 3.0 yet, the next iPhone OS upgrade should be coming with version 3.1. While there is no change log available on the new version, it should include numerous bug fixes and the mms feature is said to be turned on by default even if you are on AT&T network. We will keep you updated once we have the information on the detail change log.
