iLife and iWork free limits surface as apps overtake charts

iLife and iWork free limits surface as apps overtake charts

If you head on down to the iTunes App Store this afternoon to see how the topmost downloads are doing, you're going to see Garage Band quickly overtaking the top "Free" spot while the rest of the iLife and iWork apps climb up "Paid". But wait, you might be saying, didn't Apple just say that the iLife and iWork app suites would be free for all users from this point forward? Actually they didn't - what they actually said was that new customers - everyone purchasing a device from September 2013 forward - would be getting these apps for free.

iPad Air replaces 4th gen: where did they all go?

iPad Air replaces 4th gen: where did they all go?

If you're keen enough to have noticed the new listings for iPads in Apple's online store since right around 24 hours ago, you'll have seen the complete axing of the 3rd and/or 4th generation iPad. This replacement was made by the iPad Air, which now sits in stores as one of two full-sized iPads, the other being the iPad 2. There are iPad mini units up as well, but what happened to all those 4th generation iPads?

T-Mobile is offering all its tablets, including the new iPad Air and iPad mini with Retina display, with 200MB of free data each month for the lifetime of the slate, as well as the option to spread the cost of a new tablet purchase over two years with $0 upfront. iPad Air & Mini Retina LTE detailed (plus T-Mobile 200MB no-cost option)

The iPad Air and iPad mini with Retina display will each support fourteen LTE bands, the greatest number of any of Apple's 4G-capable devices so far, with carriers like T-Mobile already trying to differentiate themselves from the crowd with the promise of bundled data. The two new tablets, announced this morning, will work with nine carriers' LTE networks in the US, including the big four, though only T-Mobile is offering 200MB of free data for those who choose to slot in the carrier's SIM.

iPad mini with Retina display hands-on

iPad mini with Retina display hands-on

It's the main thing we complained about in our original iPad mini review, and it's the big thing Apple has addressed in its "iPad mini 2", the addition of Retina Display technology. The new iPad mini with Retina display looks just like the old version until you turn it on, at which point life gets pixel-packed. Apple's 2048 x 1536 resolution looks even more detailed on the smaller, 7.9-inch screen compared to the same res on the iPad Air's larger display, and that means more detailed graphics, smoother text, and an iOS 7 interface we kinda wanted to lick. Read on for some first impressions.

iPad Air hands-on

iPad Air hands-on

We knew Apple's full-sized iPad was going to get a significant refresh, and we weren't wrong. The iPad Air takes the 9.8-inch screen of the fourth-gen iPad and wraps it up in a brand new, super-skinny casing; we'd usually take Apple's "you have to feel it to believe it" commentary as hyperbole, but here's one of those times that you only really get the wow-factor when you pick up the fifth-generation slate. Read on for some first impressions.

iPad mini 2 official with Retina display

iPad mini 2 official with Retina display

This morning Apple has officially brought on a 2nd generation of their popular iPad mini tablet, complete with Retina display. This version of the iPad mini works with a body and presentation extremely similar to the original, working with a physical appearance not all that unlike the iPad mini's first edition. This iPad mini will be hitting the market with at least two different colorways - a darker gray and a lighter silver / white, and will be appearing aside the new 5th generation iPad - the iPad Air as well.
