The iPad mini won me over (and Star Trek is to blame)

In some respects, the iPad mini was a disappointment. Despite the hour's worth of hyperbole at Apple's press event, the tablet itself was an exercise in parts bin engineering - the processor from an old iPhone, the screen resolution from an old iPad - without the game-changing element that (yes, whether innovation or derivation) has punctuated Cupertino launches of before. Yet, despite more powerful, or pixel-dense, or flexible rivals beside it, the iPad mini has quickly become my go-to slate. The reason behind that is the hardest to quantify and yet, perversely, may be the most important for why we choose the devices we reach for. Science fiction has a lot to answer for, at least for my expectations of tablets.

First and foremost, our review of the HTC DROID DNA went live just a little while ago, so if you've been thinking of picking that phone up, be sure to have a look at our review to see what we think of it! We found out today that Apple and Samsung have been permitted to add new devices to their lawsuit, so expect Samsung to go after the iPhone 5 while Apple tries to collect damages on a number of Samsung devices. Speaking of Samsung, the company is rumored to show off a new handset with a 5-inch 1080p display at CES, so we'll be keeping our eyes peeled for that.

iPad mini LTE and 4th-gen iPad now on sale at AT&T, Verizon

If you didn't pre-order an LTE version of the iPad mini last month, not all hope is lost. Both AT&T and Verizon are now offering the smaller iPad as well as the 4th-gen iPad. AT&T says that you can purchase the new iPads at any of their physical locations, although they don't mention anything about availability on their website, but the two devices appear to be ready for purchase at ATT.com.

The Kindle Fire HD 8.9 started shipping ahead of schedule today, while new reports are suggesting that Apple may delay the new iMac into 2013. NASA was the victim of a major security breach recently, and today it said that it will make sure all of its laptops are equipped with full disk encryption by the end of the year as a result.

If you were expecting an iPad mini in the next couple of days, you may have to be a little more patient, after thieves made off with 3,600 of the coveted tablets in a heist at JFK airport. The $1.5m haul saw two pallet-loads of iPads snatched away at midnight, the NYPost reports, with the airport's own forklifts used to do the heavy lifting.

Apple has quietly rolled out a pair of new iPad mini adverts, focusing on the 7.9-inch tablet's interplay with the full-sized iPad, and how both deliver the touch experience merely at different scales. The two new commercials look at Photos and iBooks respectively, tying the two versions together with themed photos - each iPad showing one half of the frame - and topically linked books.
