, Oct 22nd 2012 Discuss [4]

Apple's iPad mini event will see particular emphasis on the smaller tablet's role in educational settings, sources claim, as part of a push to secure lucrative school district contracts to put IT equipment in classrooms. The educational capabilities of the slate - believed to run iOS, like its larger sibling, but on a 7.85-inch screen - will be one of a number of key themes at tomorrow's event, Bloomberg's source suggests, with experts indicating that the rumored $249 starting price could prove the tipping point. iPad 2 rumored to be phased out after iPad mini launch

, Oct 19th 2012 Discuss [7]

It was just about a year-and-a-half ago when Apple unveiled the iPad 2. It was crazy thinner than the first-gen iPad and had better graphics and a faster processor. According to Evercore Partners analyst Rob Cihra, the iPad 2 will be phased out once the iPad mini launches. It might sound crazy, but Cihra says the move will streamline the company's product line. Welcome to Thursday evening, everyone. This afternoon we had a bunch of quarterly reports hit, and some were better than others. Google posted its quarterly report a little prematurely, a blunder that had a hand in driving down the price of the company's stock. Later on in the day, we heard from Microsoft, which managed to do pretty good in its first quarter. Sadly, AMD posted its results for quarter 3 just a little while ago, and things aren't looking too good for the company - in fact, it says that it will have to layoff around 15% of its workforce in an attempt to save some money. SlashGear Evening Wrap-Up: October 17, 2012

It's time to begin counting down to the weekend once again, because we've hit Wednesday evening. Today we heard that the iPad Mini could launch on November 2, which makes sense considering that date is just over a week after Apple's October 23 press event. Later in the day, more sources were mentioning a November 2 release date for the iPad Mini, as well as spilling a few more details about the long-rumored device. The Isis NFC mobile payment system will apparently be launching on October 22, and Microsoft said that Internet Explorer 10 will be coming to Windows 7 in mid-November. Read The Full Story

Why do we care about the iPad mini?

Not as big as the new iPad; not as small as the iPhone 5 or iPod touch; it’s Apple’s own “tweener” and by all rights and intents the iPad mini should be nothing more than a gap filler. Yet anticipation is high for the presumed 7.85-inch iOS tablet, and while spirits always tend to get, well, spirited in advance of an Apple event, sometimes the justification seems more inexplicable than others. Arguably, in the context of the tablet market – and post-PC computing as a whole – Microsoft’s Surface is far, far more important than the iPad mini.

iPad mini release date and details splatter

, Oct 17th 2012 Discuss [2]

If you're following along with the iPad mini and its imminent release, there are a collection of details you can readily assume to be true - even without Apple revealing the release date, the models, and the specifications in each device. This release will be primarily a filing of a market hole: where there's no tablet in the market other than the iPad to placate the masses addicted to the idea that Apple's solution is best, there will soon be two - or three, depending on how you look at the situation. If you want an iPad that costs less than $399 and you want it soon, you'll only have to wait until November 2nd - if several sources saying the same thing are accurate. Read The Full Story
