Apple’s Samsung reliance grows despite legal drama says research

Apple’s Samsung reliance grows despite legal drama says research

Apple's attempts to extricate itself from Samsung reliance for components have ironically seen the Cupertino firm increase orders for some parts, new research suggests. Samsung supplied more full-sized iPad panels for Apple than LG Display did in two out of the three months of Q2 2013, NPD DisplaySearch says, and in fact has seen a dramatic uptick in how many LCD screens it sends to iPad production lines from the top of this year.

Apple fused glass patent application aims at iPhones, iPads, TVs, displays

Apple fused glass patent application aims at iPhones, iPads, TVs, displays

This week a patent application has been discovered to have been filed by Apple one week ago, this patent application seeking rights to a method for fusing glass. This glass fusion process is described by Apple to be working with several different kinds of products, this ranging from iPhones to iPad, iPods to televisions, and displays in general. While it's unlikely that this process would affect launches in the coming months, it's certainly feasible that Apple would have fused glass bits within the next year.

Does Apple drive the tablet market, or ASUS?

Does Apple drive the tablet market, or ASUS?

This afternoon the folks at the IDC released quarterly worldwide shipment numbers for tablets, suggesting as they did so that a slump in the market this quarter may be due to Apple's lack of a new iPad. And we got to thinking: it's easy to relate the growth of the tablet industry over the past several years to the iPad - but what can we see if we pinpoint the releases of individual tablets from each of the other top two tablet-making companies to their quarters? Is it the iPad that's driving this growth, or the release of excellent tablet packages by non-Apple companies?

iPad 5 pops up aside iPhone 5C in video turnover

This week we're bound to see another massive collection of Apple device leaks, not least of all because we're coming up on a period where it's likely Apple will hold an event to release a new smartphone, smartphones, or tablet. Or even a couple of tablets if the rumor mill turns out to ring true. What we're seeing today is what's being called the 5th generation iPad as well as the iPhone 5C.

IDC: Android tablets creep up on iPad as market slows

IDC: Android tablets creep up on iPad as market slows

Since it's been over a quarter since Apple released their last iPad, IDC worldwide tablet shipment numbers have shown not just that Android tablets have been gaining popularity, but that the whole market has slipped significantly. With a near 10% (9.7% to be precise) in worldwide tablet shipments this 2Q of 2013 compared to the first quarter of this year, it would seem at first that interest wanes in this segment as a whole. Compared to this same quarter one year ago, on the other hand, there's been growth - rather impressive growth, at that.

iPad mini 2 housing leaks aside iPad 5

iPad mini 2 housing leaks aside iPad 5

Though the changes appear to be few, the next-generation casings for both the iPad 5 and the iPad mini 2 appear to be hitting the factory floor with bits and pieces all their own. This double dose of Apple hardware - if it does indeed prove to be legitimate, shows the iPad family to be making a few aesthetic changes while it improves its innards - innards which we've been hypothesizing are getting incremental updates this Fall. The first of these changes comes in the Apple logo.

iPad mini reboot appears in iOS 7 code with key details

The first remix of the iPad mini that'll be hitting the market later this year has appeared in the software developer kit sent to developers for the newest iteration of iOS 7. Nexus 7 2013 Review

Nexus 7 2013 Review

The original Nexus 7 arguably marked a turning point in Android tablets, Google finally doing what critics had long been demanding, and wading into the slate market with an own-brand option. With a screen size that undercut the iPad by several inches - and pre-empted the iPad mini by several months - the Nexus 7 also fought hard on price, with razer-thin margins and ruthless specification trimming on the ASUS-made tablet keeping the starting point at under $200. Time - and tablets - wait for no one, though, and with the iPad mini on the scene it was high time for Google and ASUS to rework the Nexus 7. The second-generation, 2013 version promises to be more powerful, more grown-up, and just as affordable, but has Google done enough? Read on for the full SlashGear review.
