RadioShack has begun accepting pre-orders for the new iPad, making it the first company other than Apple to start selling the third-generation tablet, previously referred to as the iPad 3 or iPad HD. The device was unveiled yesterday and is set to launch on March 16 with optional 4G LTE connectivity through Verizon and AT&T.

Verizon has confirmed that its 4G LTE network will support the new iPad's Personal Hotspot feature at launch. This means that Verizon's customers will be able to use the iPad as a mobile hotspot to which other devices can connect to access its LTE network. Both Verizon and AT&T will be getting the device on March 16, but AT&T will not be enabling the mobile hotspot feature.

Apple's new iPad may offer LTE hardware in its international editions, but frequency restrictions mean the 4G connectivity will likely go untapped outside of North America. The new iPad WiFi + 4G put up for pre-order in Europe yesterday supports the same 700MHz and 2100MHz LTE bands as the AT&T version in the US; however, actual LTE roll-out in Europe is expected to use the 800MHz, 1800MHz and 2600MHz bands.

Today right at the drop of the hat, here right at tail end of the Apple event (which we've covered live at live.slashgear.com, also check out our new [Apple Hub]) Targus have brought forth the first set of iPad 3 accessories. They've been extremely careful to note that these cases are "Apple iPad 3rd Generation" cases rather than straight up iPad 3 cases, this being because of course Apple has dubbed the new iPad "the new iPad" without any additional name attached.

The folks at Apple have released their next generation iPad device titled simply "The new iPad" and pre-orders for the $499 device have gone live. This device will not be shipped until March 16th, the same availability date for the device around the world, and full pricing includes both internal memory increases as well as an upgrade to two different kinds of 4G LTE here in the USA, one for AT&T, the other for Verizon. This device has a set of upgrades over the iPad 2, the previous generation iPad, and has essentially the same chassis size as that unit as well.

“It’s Resolutionary” Apple says of the new iPad, and we have to agree. We’ve just grabbed some hands-on time with the new Retina Display iOS 5.1 tablet, and the difference from the iPad 2 – which, remember, stays on sale alongside it – is vast. The pixels in the 2048 x 1536 display are, at regular arm’s length, completely indistinguishable: it’s only when you get up close that you can make them out.

The 2012 version of the iPad has been revealed, and with a Retina Display, 5-megapixel iSight camera with 1080p HD video recording, Voice Dictation, and 4G LTE, all of this backed up by the new A5X chip, we’ve very likely got another winner on our hands. Apple went through the device point by point, letting us know first that the high definition display would blow our minds while the rest of the features would back it up with fantastic media capture, high quality content, and the ability to access that content at high speeds with LTE. Now we’ve just got to set it all out in front of us and decide if this generation iPad is worth picking up!
Apple is dropping the price of the iPad 2 by $100 following its announcement of the next-gen iPad, which it’s calling “The new iPad” instead of the iPad 3 or iPad HD. This price reduction of the iPad 2 will help round out Apple’s tablet lineup to cover more market segments.
