A report from iMore this morning indicated that Apple is planning to unveil the next iPhone along with the iPad mini on September 12th. The next iPhone would then ship out to customers 9 days later on September 21st, although the exact launch date for the iPad mini wasn’t quite as clear. iLounge corroborates iMore’s sources, saying that the next iPhone will launch in late September, but the site isn’t quite as confident on the prospects of the iPad mini.

Apple's iOS has already been tweaked to accommodate quadcore processors, software digging has discovered, with mention of the four-core chipsets found in the latest iOS 5.1 beta. A hidden panel within the beta discloses which processors iOS 5.1 is set up to handle, 9 to 5 Mac reports, with a reference to "/cores/core.3" indicating two more than we've seen so far in a commercially-launched iPhone, iPod or iPad. The discovery follows speculation resurfacing earlier today that Apple intends to launch not one but two new iPad models this year, with a significantly upgraded iPad 4 due in October.

Rumors of two iPad launches in a single year have resurfaced, with claims the iPad 3 debut in March will be followed by an iPad 4 "with killer applications" in October 2012. The usual shady sources in the supply chain have whispered of not only an HD-display toting third-gen Apple tablet expected imminently, DigiTimes reports, but suggested that beyond the 2048 x 1536 screen and longer battery life, "other hardware specifications may not be so amazing as expected." For that, they claim, we'll have to wait until Q4 this year.
