This week we're taking a look at the iPhone 5 as it was revealed by Apple in all its glory alongside iOS 6 and a set of hardware innovations like the Lightning connector - but what happened to NFC and wireless charging? We'd heard several times in tips and "leaks" that an NFC sensor was in the plans for this device for some time - but inside the last few weeks of this unofficial stream of shady bits, it was all but confirmed that, given the size of the device, NFC was not physically possible. Wireless charging, on a similar note, was never officially spoken about by Apple, and though Apple's competitors - such as Nokia, for example - are working with the technology soon, Apple has simply opted out.

It's time to take a peek at the entirety of the iPhone 5's specifications, top to bottom, as the device hits the Apple Store online and we get our first full taste of Apple's new smartphone hero (be sure to have a look at our wrap-up of Apple's big event). This device is the thinnest and lightest iPhone yet with a 4-inch Retina quality display up front and a new A6 chip under the hood. The iPhone 5 works with 4G LTE on a variety of networks both here in the USA and abroad and works with what Apple calls Ultrafast wireless or "LTE. The right way." The iPhone 5 has a new set of earbuds called EarPods, a new dock connector called Lightning, and a boosted 8-megapixel "iSight" camera as well.

iPhone 5 priced at $199 with pre-orders starting September 14th

The iPhone 5 has been introduced today with prices that are exactly the same as the iPhone 4S while the iPhone 3GS is axed from the lineup and the iPhone 4 becomes a free device (on contract, of course.) The iPhone 4S was demoted today to the mid-tier of iPhone devices at the $99 price point while the iPhone 5 will be coming in 16, 32, and 64GB iterations for $199, $299, and $399 USD respectively. The iPhone 5 will be up for pre-orders on the 14th (that's this Friday) and will be shipping September 21st.

iPhone 5 4-inch Retina display detailed with massive resolution

The iPhone 5's display has been revealed today at Apple's press event, bringing with it a lovely 1136 x 640 screen resolution with 16:9 aspect ratio across 4-inches of space. This device will be rolling out with a Retina quality display, mind you, at 326 PPI, amongst the most high-definition on the market today. This display offers a 5th row of icons for the iOS 6 experience and still fits in our hand with the same width as the iPhone 4S and before.

Apple has introduced the A6 chip for their next-generation iPhone 5 hardware this afternoon at the event which also showed off several more impressive bits of hardware and software enhancements. The iPhone 5's A6 chip has been touted as having 2x faster CPU performance than the previous chip and brings on 2x the graphics performance as well. This chip has been shown as bringing on launches of apps at nearly 2x the speed as the previous iPhone on the whole.

With less than two hours left before the big iPhone 5 Apple event [tune in to our liveblog], several bits and pieces have leaked including what very much appears to be the logic board from the device, complete with components. This piece of hardware is set to include the motor and the radio, both a brand new A6 chip and a bit of Qualcomm hardware to back up 4G LTE connectivity. This week there's been some reports from Apple staff members - all anonymous, of course - noting that they're staffing up for the morning of September 14th, likely for iPhone 5 pre-orders. This information comes from MacRumors where they've heard from trusted sources that pre-orders may not be starting on the same day as the Apple iPhone 5 event, that being the 12th - tomorrow. Apple sales support is being ramped up, according to sources, beginning at 6AM Eastern on Friday, with sustained large numbers of staff being ready for action throughout the day.
