Monsoon Multimedia are taking preorders for their Vulkano set-top box, which the company reckons can replace not only your TiVo but your Slingbox and Roku too.  Basically a place-shifting streamer with optional DVR functionality and various smartphone clients for remote use over 3G/WiFi, the Vulkano also promises to keep pace with new STBs; the company has said they'll be releasing updates to add Google TV compatibility, among other things.

Netflix PS3 disc-free update coming; Hulu Plus is “a direct competitor”

Netflix PS3 disc-free update coming; Hulu Plus is “a direct competitor”

Netflix are promising an update to their PS3 streaming client sometime within the next three months, complete with a new UI that's loaded onto the console rather than requiring a disc as with the current implementation.  That's just one part of the company's attempt to take on the Hulu Plus challenge; according to NewTeeVee, Netflix are seeing slowing DVD subscriber growth as more users turn to streaming.  Netflix CEO Reed Hastings puts that down, in part, to an increase in TV content.

Hulu Plus Could Bring Ad-Free Option to Customers, if You’re Willing to Pay for it

Considering most, if not all of the rumors about Hulu Plus came true, we're going to go ahead and point out that this one's probably going to come true, too. Especially considering the fact it's not so much of a rumor, but more of a "confirmation" from the Chief of Hulu himself, Jason Kilar. A confirmation that he's "comfortable" with the idea, that is. Not that it's coming.

Hulu Plus Requires PSN+ Only for Preview Period

Hulu Plus Requires PSN+ Only for Preview Period

Right on the heels of the official announcement from Hulu that Hulu Plus is real, came the down-right depressing news that PlayStation 3 owners would be forced with a decision: want that Season Ticket for all your favorite shows? Then sign up for PSN+ -- no ifs, ands, or buts about it. It may have not been a big deal to everyone, but there's always a few people out there that don't want to pay extra for something they're already going to have to pay for. Well, thanks to Hulu proper, we've got confirmation that everything isn't as it seems.

Hulu Plus on PS3 Could Mean Mandatory Subscription to PSN+

Hulu Plus on PS3 Could Mean Mandatory Subscription to PSN+

Yesterday, Hulu made waves with the announcement of the much-rumored Hulu Plus. A brand new subscription-based methodology to stream your favorite TV shows, whenever you want. For just $9.99 per month, you'll get your hands on the "Season Ticket," which will let you watch any episode of a particular season, with no expiration date (which is the general rule of thumb on Hulu right now). And, with that announcement, came the revelation that Sony's PlayStation 3 would be getting support as well in the near future. But, there could be some very important fine print not quite revealed.

The Daily Slash: June 24th 2010

We're at the tail-end of the week, and we're not going to lie: we can feel it. All the way to our bones. If you're getting paid this Friday, hopefully you've already decided on something to buy yourself -- gotta spend that earned money, right? Or, maybe you've already waited in line for the thing you wanted to get yourself? That's probably the case. But, moving away from the Apple-phone for a short time, let's take a look at The Best of R3 Media. First up, we've got a software update for the EVO 4G coming soon, an updated keyboard that we want, and some wireless syncing for BlackBerrys. And then, in the Dredge 'Net, Hulu's still being passed around, RIM does pretty well for itself, and head to a Microsoft Store to play some Kinect.

Hulu Plus Could be Adding CBS and Time Warner in Time for Paid Subscription

Until we get some kind of official confirmation, we're still sticking to Hulu Plus. It just has that kind of ring to it that we can't ignore. And it's been awhile since we last heard anything about the subscription-based service for one of the Internet's most popular video streaming services. While we already know that the subscription service will likely appear on Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Apple's iPad, the content of that subscription has been tossed around all willy-nilly. Thanks to a leak, though, we can start to see what may be utilized as content.
