SlashGear Week in Review – Week 41 2009

After spending most of Friday curled in a ball twitching and drooling after losing power and Internet access for almost 12 hours, I am glad to be back online and in the 21st century again. Just in time to hunker down and dose myself with a nice helping of week in review for your perusal. Chris reviewed the GSM Palm Pre and found the camera wasn't as good as some of its peers but found plenty to like in the end. The webOS operating system stands apart from rival OS'. Buffalo announced the HD-HU3 USB 3.0 drive and controller that will be shipping in Japan this month. The drive isn’t even that expensive; I hope it comes to America too.

HTC HD2 hits O2 UK in week starting October 19th

According to carrier O2, the HTC HD2 will be launching in the UK from the week beginning October 19th, putting the flagship Windows Phone potentially less then 10 days away from capacious pockets. We're yet to hear anything official from O2 or HTC themselves - the latter only told reporters that the HD2 would drop in October when they launched the Windows Mobile 6.5 device earlier this week - but customer services for the carrier have apparently been telling callers about the October 19th date.

HTC HD2 preview glowing: the Windows Phone to beat?

We’re still anxiously rubbing our hands together in anticipation of our HTC HD2 review unit, but until that arrives we’ll make do with previews elsewhere. Mobile-Review have a well-warranted reputation for their smartphone nous, and so when they say the HD2 has no less communication skill than an iPhone and no less style than the original Touch Diamond, you know you’re looking at an impressive Windows Phone.

HTC HD2 Windows Phone gets official: Hands-on Video

After weeks of rumor, HTC have confirmed the existence of their latest flagship Windows Phone, the HTC HD2 (aka the HTC Leo). As expected, the HD2 runs Windows Mobile 6.5 on a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, with a 4.3-inch WVGA capacitive touchscreen and 5-megapixel autofocus camera; it’s also the first Windows Phone to support both multitouch and HTC Sense. Perhaps best of all, HTC CEO Peter Chou has confirmed that HTC will be offering a US 3G version of the HD2 in Q1 2010. SlashGear sat down with Chou earlier on today to get a preview of the HD2 and find out more about HTC’s focus moving forward.

HTC Dragon to be first Snapdragon WVGA Android smartphone?

Details are scant right now, but according to the early leaks HTC are already working on their first Qualcomm Snapdragon Android smartphone, believed to be called the HTC Dragon. The Android counterpart to the HTC HD2, the HTC Dragon is said to have an 800 x 480 capacitive touchscreen along with the 1GHz processor.

HTC Touch2 Windows Phone review

Windows Mobile 6.5 is arriving with a fanfare, and a number of high-end Windows Phones to demonstrate Microsoft’s latest OS’ flexibility. Not every device is a do-everything uber-phone, however; part of Windows Mobile’s strength is that it also does duty on relatively entry-level handsets. The HTC Touch2 – replacement to the original HTC Touch – is one such device; what it lacks in bells & whistles, it attempts to make up for in simplicity. AT&T HTC Pure Windows Phone review

AT&T’s first Windows Mobile 6.5 smartphone, the HTC Pure, has some reasonable heritage; while the casing may look new, the guts of the handset are shared with HTC’s Touch Diamond2. Back when we reviewed the Diamond2 in May, we described it as the best Windows Mobile 6.1 smartphone on the market, and suggested it was well placed for the promised update to 6.5. Verizon HTC Imagio Windows Phone review

A thoughtful person might look at the Verizon Imagio and decide that it’s almost HTC delivering the Touch HD (Review part 1 & part 2) that their US audience never officially had. A comparatively large touchscreen, slender casing and 5-megapixel camera certainly tally with what the Touch HD offered; still, it’s been almost a year since we reviewed the GSM phone, so does the Imagio deliver the goods with Windows Mobile 6.5? Sprint HTC Hero Review

We weren’t short of praise for the HTC Hero when we reviewed the European GSM model back in July, and since then there’s been no small amount of anticipation for the US version of the device. That arrives on Sprint come October 11th, and we’ve been playing with it to see whether its lost its charm in the journey across the Atlantic.
