Verizon's very first blazing fast 4G LTE smartphone was the HTC Thunderbolt. We did a full review on the handset and although we were a disappointed by the poor battery life, we were indeed impressed by its speed. Ramsay have conducted a survey of carrier retail stores to see which smartphones were their top performers. We posted up our review of the HTC ThunderBolt back in March. We figured the Thunderbolt was the fastest phone for data fiends we had tested. However, the smartphone had some notable features missing. Reports that the Thunderbolt was randomly dropping the 4G connection started to surface this month and Verizon promised an update to fix the issue was coming soon. Verizon's experiencing some stumbling blocks the day before the commercial release of their new DROID Charge by Samsung. The LTE network that Thunderbolt users have been using with speeds of up to 12Mbps down is curently broken. Completely broken, as in down nationwide. This is only affecting the LTE component of Verizon's network, their 3G network is as strong as ever. Verizon is aware of the problem and has it's engineers working for a fix. For you Thunderbolt owners with a broken phone, there is also a workaround. This network outage is just five days after Verizon rolled out LTE to six more cities across the US.

Verizon Wireless is the next to announce its Q1 2011 financial results, and it's a strong start to both its LTE 4G network - with over 500,000 LTE devices activated - and its iPhone 4 sales - with 2.2m Apple handsets activated. Over 260,000 HTC ThunderBolt phones have been sold in a two week period, helping total wireless revenues lift 10.2-percent over last year to $16.9bn.

According to BTIG Research analyst Walter Piecyk, the HTC Thunderbolt is showing up the iPhone 4 by matching and even outselling the Apple smartphone in many Verizon Wireless stores. The informal study conducted by Piecyk involved calling 150 different Verizon Wireless locations across 22 major U.S. cities and asking which smartphone was selling better.

The following is an account of the HTC Arrive being handled by your humble narrator Chris Burns, a fellow who before handling this phone had literally never worked with Window Phone 7 before save for a couple of small interactions here or there. It appears that the folks at XDA, that vast community of developers and hackers, have gotten their hands on some super secret photos of the HTC Pyramid, a fashionable phone coming down the pipeline toward the public in a 4.3-inch display fashion. According to these most recent photos, this phone will be coming out with a 1.2Ghz processor with no name, 768MB or RAM, and a QHD resolution display. The more we see the more we like!

If you follow the posts of myself and Vince very closely, you’ll know that we’re both currently carrying around the brand new HTC ThunderBolt (amongst many other competitor devices, I’m sure you’re aware.) It’s important that when we carry around a device for review that we take care of it. We can’t be holding onto a device in brand new condition then return it all broken and busted up!
