T-Mobile officially announced the upcoming availability of the HTC Radar 4G as its very first Windows Phone 7.5 Mango handset to support its HSPA+ network. This announcement coincides with Microsoft’s roll-out of the major Mango update for Windows Phone 7, which just went live this morning.

One of the very first Windows Phone 7.5 Mango devices from HTC, called the Radar, has just passed through the FCC. This is always a good sign that the device is gearing up for launch but when exactly that will be is still uncertain. The handset was first officially unveiled at the beginning of this month during IFA 2011.

The device will be heading to T-Mobile as the HTC Radar 4G with support for the carrier’s HSPA+ network. The FCC filings have it listed under model number PI06110, packing support for GSM/EDGE/WCDMA bands as well as the 1700MHz band used by T-Mobile. The device sports a 3.8-inch WVGA display, 1GHz processor, and 8GB internal storage. It also offers a 5-megapixel rear-facing camera with a single LED flash and f/2.2 aperture as well as a VGA resolution front-facing camera for video calls.

Although a release date hasn’t been announced yet, Microsoft has already confirmed that the Windows Phone 7.5 Mango update will be rolled out to existing Windows Phone handsets within the next two weeks. It’s possible that some of the very first Windows Phone 7.5 Mango handsets will be launched around the same time.

A white HTC Sensation is incoming, it’s been confirmed, with UK retailer Phones4u announcing that it has won the jump on other retailers to offer both the pale version of the existing Android smartphone and the new, Beats Audio enabled HTC Sensation XE from October 1. Meanwhile, the white HTC Radar will also be arriving at the retailer’s stores on October 1, and the company is promising to put some heft behind Windows Phone marketing.

The Radar “will feature in hero POS [Point Of Sale] across all stores and its own demo hub across 150 of Phones4u’s top stores” the company claims, while staff will receive specific Windows Phone training in preparation. That should hopefully address frequent complaints that in-store promotion of Windows Phone falls short of that for iOS and Android devices.

When they all arrive at the beginning of next month, the Sensation XE will be priced from free on a £36 or above two-year agreement, the white Sensation will be free on £31 or above agreements, and the Radar will be free on £26 or above agreements. If you would prefer a SIM-free Sensation XE, however, retailer MobileFun has confirmed that it will arrive on October 7 priced at £489.95 ($775).

HTC was Microsoft’s most ambitious partner at the original Windows Phone launch, and the company has a similarly strong line-up now that Mango is on the scene. The HTC Radar is a 3.8-inch WP7 Mango handset with a WVGA display, 1GHz processor and a design that’s reminiscent of the Flyer or an ironed-out Legend. We grabbed some hands-on time with HTC’s Radar to see whether or not it should be on yours.

Build quality, as we’ve found with all of HTC’s unibody devices, is strong and creak-free. The lower white panel slides off to reveal the battery and SIM card slot, and there’s a dedicated camera key, microUSB port and 3.5mm headphone socket. Size-wise, the 120.5 x 61.5 x 10.9 mm handset is more compact in the hand than the first-gen HTC Trophy, despite offering the same screen size. It also has better viewing angles.

HTC is particularly pushing the Radar’s photographic abilities, with the 5-megapixel camera using a back-illuminated sensor for improved low-light performance. There’s also a 28mm wide-angle lens, together with a single-LED flash and f/2.2 aperture. Up front is a VGA resolution camera for vanity shots and video calls, when they’re supported.

It’s really the combination of HTC’s hardware and the much-improved Mango that makes the Radar a success. Microsoft’s first major update to Windows Phone has, as we discovered in our technical preview, polished many of the rough edges early-adopters complained about; with the Radar expected to be priced roughly in line with the Android-based HTC Desire S, it’s likely to find an audience among those who want to spend less time tinkering with their handset and more time getting on with smartphone features.
