T-Mobile G1 gets Android 2.1 custom ROM [Video]

, Apr 29th 2010 Discuss [0]

The T-Mobile G1 was the first Android device on the market, and it now looks like the ageing handset will be the next to get Android 2.1.  Despite its age - and mediocre specs - Cyanogen has managed to get a new Android 2.1 ROM running for the G1, called CyanogenMod 5.0.7, and as kmobs' video shows (after the cut) it's all working surprisingly smoothly. Vodafone Spain Admits to Having 3,000 Malware Infected HTC Magics

, Mar 19th 2010 Discuss [1]

There's no hiding the fact that when you get something new, the first thing you want to do is open up the box, pop in the battery (if it needs a battery), and then turn that thing on and start going about your business. What you don't want, is to turn on that said device, and find out that you've got some information-jacking malware botnet program running on it. That's a bad day. That's exactly what happened to several thousand folks who had recently picked up a Vodafone Spain HTC Magic, the wireless carrier has recently admitted. Read The Full Story

T-Mobile HTC HD2 in March; myTouch Slide May 17th?

, Jan 20th 2010 Discuss [2]

Details of T-Mobile USA's upcoming handset launches have emerged, with TmoNews claiming to have release dates for several Android, Windows Mobile and other devices.  Perhaps of most interest is the HTC HD2, previously confirmed for T-Mobile in the Spring and now expected in March 2010; we're also curious about two new HTC Android phones, the T-Mobile myTouch Slide (which looks like it could be a QWERTY version of the HTC Magic/myTouch 3G) coming May 17th, and before that an update to the HTC myTouch 3G (described as v1.2) which throws in a 3.5mm headphone socket on February 10th. DIY Virtual Reality headset is bizarre genius [Video]

, Oct 27th 2009 Discuss [0]

I think it's fair to say that if you make one of these DIY virtual reality headsets, your kids will definitely be the coolest in the playground.  The handiwork of Recombu's Andrew Lim, the cardboard headset takes advantage of an accelerometer-packing HTC Magic, an old pair of lab goggles and some boyish enthusiasm to create a head-tracking view of the world. HTC Sense arrives on Magic in Asia; further updates unclear

, Oct 27th 2009 Discuss [0]

Back in August HTC confirmed that certain models in their Android line-up would eventually get an upgrade to HTC Sense, the UI debuted on the well-received HTC Hero.  Now HTC Asia has pushed out Sense for the Magic; however it appears to be only for unlocked versions of the Magic (and potentially only Asian-language models) rather than carrier-branded versions such as the T-Mobile myTouch 3G. T-Mobile myTouch 3G gets celebrity endorsement [Video]

, Aug 26th 2009 Discuss [0]

Considered T-Mobile's myTouch 3G but not yet convinced?  The carrier understands your reticence, and so to swing things in their favor they've done the obvious thing and enlisted the help of Whoopi Goldberg.  Yes, everybody's favorite Sister Act star not only loves the myTouch 3G, but enough to grin aimlessly while playing with it on video. HTC confirm Sense UI for unlocked Magic, not for T-Mobile myTouch 3G

, Aug 17th 2009 Discuss [0]

Since the HTC Hero debuted, owners of the company's existing Android smartphones have been wondering whether they'd see HTC Sense - the company's custom UI - released for their phones.  Hopes were raised and then dashed back in June, when HTC confirmed that Sense would be available on certain devices, only those not "Google" branded; they've reiterated that at a Taiwan press conference, revealing that the unlocked HTC Magic will seen an update but the T-Mobile myTouch 3G and Vodafone HTC Magic will not. HTC focus on mid-range for 2009; Magic sells over 1m

, Aug 12th 2009 Discuss [0]

We might rib T-Mobile USA for pricing the HTC Touch Pro2 so highly, but we'd still much rather spend time with that smartphone than, say, the HTC Mega.  Going by the latest comments from HTC CEO Peter Chou, though, we may not have much choice soon.  Chou says the company will be focussing their development budgets on mid-range smartphones, in the expectation that such models - with price-tags of around $300 pre-subsidies - will account for 50 to 60-percent of total device shipments in the second half of this year. Over at our Google-obsessed sibling site Android Community we've been keeping track of the latest efforts to put HTC Sense onto existing Android smartphones.  After HTC's confirmation last week that "with Google" branded devices wouldn't be getting an upgrade to Sense, the company's latest enhanced UI, efforts to persuade leaked Hero ROMs to run on the HTC Magic and T-Mobile G1 redoubled; happily there are demo videos which show just how well these efforts have been going.
