HTC Incredible 4G shot with ICS and elite upgrades

The next generation in one of HTC’s best-selling lines of devices has appeared in several photos today complete with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and HTC’s own Sense 4.0 inside. This device is set to replace the HTC Incredible 2 which we’ve reviewed and adore so well and will have not only a dual-core processor and Verizon’s 4G LTE connectivity, it’ll have many of the same perks the HTC One series has as revealed earlier this month in our HTC One S and One X reviews. This device will likely be running the Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 dual-core processor and comes with red Beats logos and flares like you’ve come to expect from HTC devices.

This device comes with MHL connectivity for HDMI conversion to your big-screen TV, NFC right out of the box, an 8 megapixel camera on the back, VGA camera on the front, and 8GB of built-in storage. Like all great Android devices with a love for expansion, this device has a microSD card slot with the ability to take on 32GB of extra space. Inside you’ll also find 1GB of RAM.

Have a peek here briefly at the HTC One S, a member of the HTC One family running Sense 4.0 on top of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich – this is a very similar experience to what you’ll get in the Incredible 4G:

The display on this device is likely 4-inches, but that’s not entirely been confirmed quite yet. That said, it does appear very much to have qHD resolution meaning whatever we’ve got here, it’s gonna be sharp. Like the HTC Rezound, this device has a rubbery-like soft plastic back and many of the same red stylings, and by all means looks to be nearly as bulky and fat as that machine was (and is) as well. We shall see!

HTC DROID Incredible 4G spotted at FCC

The FCC has released documents leading mobile sleuths to ponder the next Verizon HTC release in a DROID Incredible with 4G LTE. This device would be the next in a line of ultra-successful DROID-branded HTC units last seen in the HTC Incredible 2 and used by none other than your humble narrator and Android Community’s Cory Gunther as we traversed the landscape at last month’s MWC 2012 in Barcelona. This newest device has a slightly different set of connectivity bands available but will likely bump up the masses to the new generation with its dual-core processor and AMOLED display.

The Incredible 2 is a more than modern device already, not exactly working to bring in the early adopters or top of the line specification seekers with its FroYo interface and single-core processor, but strong nonetheless with a unique physical build and HTC Sense UI. This new device is sure to join the ranks of the HTC One crew with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and a new flavoring of HTC Sense, having not quite the quad-core processor of the HTC One X, but rolling out with a dual-core 1.2GHz (almost certainly OMAP) chip instead.

This device likely has a 4-inch display not unlike its predecessor and will essentially be an once-over for an already rather popular build. Verizon will certainly push this device out before the HTC One line comes available, so expect is MUCH sooner than later! Incredible 2 unboxing and hands-on

There’s something mighty familiar about Verizon’s DROID Incredible 2 by HTC. True, it’s the follow-up to the original Incredible, but it also bears more than a passing resemblance to the European HTC Incredible S we reviewed last month. Back then we praised the smartphone’s distinctive industrial design, decent sized 4-inch Super-LCD WVGA display and all-day battery life, though weren’t too keen on the Android 2.2 OS. Question is, will Verizon’s CDMA version suffer the same fate?

Froyo is certainly all you’re getting right now; though with the original Incredible tipped to be getting Gingerbread soon we’re expecting something similar for the new version in the not-too-distant future. Still, with HTC Sense wrapping everything up, it’s hard to tell the difference, and the 1GHz processor keeps things moving reasonably briskly. We’re yet to see particularly dual-core CPU intensive apps hit the Android Market, though when that happens the single-core Snapdragon in the Incredible 2 may start to look underwhelming.

Next to Verizon’s other new arrival of today, the DROID Charge by Samsung, the LCD screen on the Incredible 2 seems underwhelming. Still, it’s also $100 less than the Super AMOLED Plus equipped Charge, though the more expensive handset also gets 4G LTE whereas the HTC makes do with 3G.

We’ll be putting the Verizon DROID Incredible 2 through its paces in time for the full SlashGear review, so until then enjoy the hands-on video!

HTC Incredible S hands-on [Video]

Of all of HTC’s new devices at MWC 2011, the handset we’re least convinced with is the HTC Incredible S. The company’s “inside-out” style reminds us of a plastic pool former, and while it certainly feels unusual in the hand, we’re not the biggest fans.

Generally, performance is in line with what we’re familiar with from the Verizon version of the Incredible, though the Incredible S does add in a front-facing webcam along with its GSM radios. That means HTC’s new video call app is present, along with the Mirror app. We’ve a feeling, though, that keen users will happily switch the Incredible S’ 4-inch touchscreen for the Desire S’ 3.7-inch touchscreen and Android 2.4 Honeycomb out of the box, rather than Froyo on the larger phone.

If HTC can push out the promised Gingerbread update in a timely manner, then the Incredible S will look a more tempting proposition; assuming, of course, you’re a fan of the industrial styling.

HTC Incredible S official

HTC’s Verizon DROID Incredible has spawned a European version, the HTC Incredible S, now packing a GSM radio into its unusually angular casing. HTC describes the style as “inside out” design, though what’s really on the inside is a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8255 single-core processor. Unusually, despite HTC claiming that the Incredible S will be positioned as an Android enthusiast’s device, it will actually launch with 2.2 Froyo.

That will be upgraded to Android 2.4 Gingerbread “early on” the company promises, though there’s no more specific timescale than that. What you do get is HTC Sense, an 8-megapixel autofocus camera with dual-LED flash on the back, and a front-facing 1.3-megapixel webcam for video calls. 1.1GB of internal storage, 768MB of RAM and a microSD memory card slot round things out.

The HTC Incredible S will be the first of HTC’s “evolutionary” updates to go on sale, arriving in early Q2 2011. No word on pricing at this stage.

HTC Droid Incredible for Verizon has Hidden 4G Settings Menu

While Verizon has a firm plan on their LTE roll-out for the rest of 2010, leading all the way out to 2013, there’s no reason to think that their current generation devices have the ability to access 4G technology. At least, that’s what they want you to think. Courtesy of wwwery, the settings screens that you see below were found doing a simple Gesture Search (a Google app/search method) on the HTC Droid Incredible.

Unfortunately, there’s obviously not a lot of information to go on here. The settings screen does indeed say 4G, and there is an option to turn it on. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean anything in the way that it will connect to Verizon’s LTE network when it does indeed launch later this year. It could just mean that HTC was thinking about 4G, and that’s it. Or, if we’re looking at fueling the rumor mill and hoping for the best, it could indeed mean that the Droid line-up of devices has some way of accessing Verizon’s 4G, and there’s going to be a lot of happy people later this year.

HTC Droid Incredible and Motorola DROID X stock delayed until August

Oh, the irony. Verizon, having offered HTC Droid Incredible customers the chance to switch their order of the short-supply smartphone to the new Motorola DROID X and hopefully get a new Android smartphone sooner, now find themselves lacking in DROID X stock. According to the carrier’s webstore, neither handset is currently available.

In fact, stock isn’t expected to ship out until August 3rd, two weeks from today. Both are priced at $199.99 with a new, two-year agreement and the mandatory voice and data plans.

Having reviewed both the Droid Incredible and the DROID X, we can’t really say we’re surprised by the demand; both handsets are strong performers, with great displays, fast processors and decent multimedia performance. Are you waiting for one or the other? Let us know in the comments.

HTC Using Super TFT LCD Displays to Reinforce Dwindling Stock

If you haven’t read the review of the Droid Incredible, or the HTC Desire, then we’ll add the main draw of those phones right here (even though you should go read them, anyway): Their 3.7-inch AMOLED displays are amazing. Unless you plan on using your device in direct sunlight all the time, AMOLED is definitely one of the best displays out there (yes, Super AMOLED is better). But, it’s been rough for HTC to keep their latest AMOLED-toting device in stock, and a lot of that has to do with that screen. Changes are afoot, though, which may help people out there aching to get their hands on the Droid Incredible they’ve purchased before the end of July.

First and foremost, HTC is still planning on using AMOLED displays. They are in no way completely phasing them out of their future plans. However, they have to b realistic: As of right now, the Droid Incredible is currently on back-order until the end of July, and as far as we’ve heard, there’s no telling when that will steady itself. So, what’s the best way to fix the situation? You change the display. That’s where Sony’s Super TFT LCD comes in. According to HTC, there’s no discernible difference between the AMOLED and Super LCD displays, so that should mean customers won’t get too upset with the alteration.

While Samsung is pushing Super AMOLED right now, it seems that manufacturing of AMOLED displays have taken a bit of a backseat. It does make sense, though. Samsung needs to push their own AMOLED and Super AMOLED display phones, and obviously they’re going to take precedence against anything else. Or any other manufacturer, for that matter. But, HTC has a plan, and if they’re accurate about the non-difference between the two displays, then it looks like they’ve on the right road.

There are still unanswered questions, though. Unfortunately, HTC doesn’t quite know how they are going to explain, or package, the change in displays to its customers. While many people may not see the difference, you can’t put on the box that there’s an AMOLED display tucked away inside if there isn’t. HTC is currently ironing out the details, but for now, it seems that everything is still in the planning stages. And, as for the Super LCD display themselves, HTC says they’ve got a working demo of the new handsets almost ready to go, and right now we’re just waiting to see that demo for ourselves. We’re curious as to how they managed to get the same color saturation out of the Super LCD that’s so prevalent on the AMOLED displays. We’ll be sure to stay updated on the situation, so stay tuned.

SMS bug creates Android messaging confusion

As if we needed another reason to be careful about our sexting habits, an apparent bug on Android devices is causing text and multimedia messages to be sent to unintended recipients. Multiple Android users are reporting the fault on Google’s support forums; the native messaging app on their phone – several models have apparently been affected, including the Google Nexus One and HTC Incredible – replaces the selected recipient of an SMS or MMS with a different identity, sometimes only showing the switch after the message has been sent.

Confusing matters, not every Android owner has been able to reproduce the fault. Some have found that by holding two separate SMS conversations and switching between them (as replies arrive) mid-typing can prompt a switch, but the issue seems to be affecting devices with no observable pattern. Currently the only workaround is to delete conversation threads when you’re done reading them, though that’s not likely to meet with particular enthusiasm from Android owners.

Verizon HTC Incredible down to $150 at Amazon

Persuaded by our HTC Droid Incredible review that the Verizon smartphone is the Android handset for you? Currently priced at $200 on Verizon’s own site, you can save yourself $50 by heading over to Amazon where the Incredible is down to $149.99 (with a new service plan, naturally).

It’s worth noting that Amazon only offer two-year agreements with the Incredible, whereas Verizon will let you pick a one-year plan though charge you $269.99 upfront for the handset. Still, you’re saving money over the course of the agreement all the same. If you have a little extra, we’d point to Verizon’s option; if you’re more concerned with getting your hands on the Incredible for as little initial outlay as possible, Amazon is the place for you.

Verizon Droid Incredible by HTC on sale today

Feel like shopping for a new Android smartphone today? Verizon Wireless’ eagerly anticipated Droid Incredible by HTC has finally gone on sale, but if you weren’t quick then you may have missed the first batch. According to Verizon’s site, “due to high demand” new orders for the Incredible will only ship by May 4th. However, there should also be retail stock in stores, so it may be worth calling your local Verizon retailer.

The reason we think it’s worth it is that the Incredible is basically Google’s Nexus One made even slicker. As well as the same 3.7-inch WVGA AMOLED touchscreen and Android 2.1 OS, there’s HTC Sense, an 8-megapixel autofocus camera with dual-LED flash, EVDO Rev.A and WiFi, along with GPS, Bluetooth and excellent Microsoft Exchange support.

Google Verizon Nexus One plans shelved in favor of Droid Incredible?

Back in our Verizon Droid Incredible by HTC review last week, we pondered about who would pick up a Verizon Nexus One when the arguably superior Incredible was available. It’s looking like Google themselves might be wondering the same thing; their Nexus One page has been updated, with the previous “coming soon to Verizon” message replaced by a link to the Droid Incredible preorder site and the suggestion that the new handset is the “similarly feature-packed cousin of the Nexus One.”

A message on the official Google Nexus One blog, meanwhile, reiterates that message, flagging up the new Vodafone UK preorder launch and suggesting that the Droid Incredible makes for a marvellous alternative to those wedded to Verizon. The Incredible, incidentally, is currently up for preorder, with deliveries expected to begin from April 29th.

It’s unclear whether this means there will be no official CDMA Nexus One, or whether Google are merely filling in the time before the handset becomes availability with a quick boost to another device that runs their OS. Personally, if you insist on sticking to Verizon then we’d point you to the Droid Incredible over the Nexus One, if only for the higher-resolution camera.

The Droid Incredible is, well, Incredible

At the beginning of the year, Google called a group of reporters and analysts to Google HQ to announce a new phone, the Nexus One. A joint effort of HTC and Google, the N1 was a slim device, running a speedy Snapdragon processor and an AMOLED display. Running the latest version of Android, 2.1, it was state of the art, at least for January.

The biggest problem of the Nexus One, in my opinion, is that it runs stock Android and while 2.1 was nice, it lacked so many things that vendors like HTC had brought to the market with their Sense UI built on top of Android. T-Mobile’s 3G network coverage also left much to be desired (there’s now an AT&T version of the N1 for sale as well.) Wouldn’t it be great if there were a version of the N1 that ran HTC Sense and perhaps was on the Verizon network as well. A super Droid if you will. Well, good things come to those who wait and over the last few days I’ve been testing the Droid Incredible by HTC, running on the Verizon network, and it delivers.

Like the Nexus One, the Incredible is among the speediest Android device I’ve ever used. Even running HTC’s Sense UI, there’s no lag and the interface is as fast and fluid as it was meant to be. Switching from panel to panel is smooth. The overall coverage and speed of Verizon’s network mean that information flows quickly as well so the screens are constantly updated in real time. Sense UI fixes many glaring issues of the Android platform, most notably Exchange integration. With full support of the ActiveSync protocol, it’s easy to get your contacts, calendar and mail on the device. Why Google still doesn’t offer real support for Exchange is a mystery to me but HTC delivers with the best support of the platform making their devices my recommendation for users who need that functionality. Support for full social media integration with Facebook and a built-in Twitter client make the device all that much more useful to me.

I still have issues overall with the Android platform. Applications are still limited to internal storage, which means there still are few, if any, Android games worth playing. Security remains an issue with no support for passwords or local encryption and there’s still no native PC sync to get my content on the device beyond the cloud. That’s disappointing and until these issues get resolved, it’s hard for me to see how Android makes the leap from the enthusiast to the mass market, even with all the HTC enhancements. The good news is the platform is getting better and better over time; the bad news, it’s not fast enough.

Android is now a force to reckoned with in the mobile space and the Incredible is currently what the state of the art looks like. If you’ve been waiting for the Verizon version of the Nexus One, wait no more, the Incredible provides a better experience with all the hardware and Android 2.1 goodness but now with the powerful addition of Sense UI layered on for good measure. This is now the flagship device for Verizon users.

Although Android still feels like an enthusiast platform the Incredible takes us one step closer to a true mass market and mainstream device.

Verizon preorders for Droid Incredible by HTC begin

So you’ve read our Droid Incredible by HTC review, you’ve checked out the dedicated coverage on our sister-site Android Community, and now you want to pick up the Android smartphone yourself. Verizon have kicked off preorders for the Incredible, with the smartphone priced at $199.99 after an online discount.

Preorders will be shipped for delivery on April 29th, in keeping with the carrier’s previous teaser. The phone has a 3.7-inch WVGA OLED touchscreen, 8-megapixel autofocus camera with dual-LED flash, Android 2.1 and HTC’s Sense UI enhancements, along with support for EVDO Rev.A, WiFi and Bluetooth 2.1+EDR.

Plans, meanwhile, start from $39.99 per month for a basic voice package, but you’ll also need to add a mandatory data package. Droid Incredible Review (vs. Nexus One vs. Moto Droid)

Incredible, they call it, and for once the marketing hyperbole may be right. The Verizon Droid Incredible by HTC takes a somewhat familiar spec sheet and squeezes out something different enough to stand out from the crowd. For our full review of the Droid Incredible, check out our dedicated Android Community coverage; if you’re more interested in how this shiny new smartphone fits into the current Android line-up – and, more importantly, whether you should choose it or a rival device – then read on.

The Snapdragon chipset has seen plenty of use in recent HTC devices – the Nexus One and the Desire, if you’re limiting things to Android – as has the 3.7-inch OLED WVGA display. Previous phones have had EVDO Rev.A, too, and WiFi, Bluetooth and GPS are par for the course too. Where things improve are in the optics and the internal storage: the Incredible will be the first HTC device to ship with an 8-megapixel autofocus camera, and it’s paired with a healthy 8GB of onboard storage.

What’s interesting is that we’re expecting Google’s CDMA Nexus One to arrive imminently, and the most obvious difference between the two will be HTC’s use of their home-grown Sense UI. Initially limited to T-Mobile USA, now also on AT&T, the Nexus One runs the bare Android 2.1 OS, and while it’s a more attractive, usable proposition than earlier iterations of the platform, it’s still nowhere near as intuitive out of the box as Sense makes things. As well as adding an extra two panes to the homescreen, Sense packs a preloaded Twitter client in the shape of HTC Peep, Flickr and Facebook integration, and a Friend Stream app which pulls all your contacts social network updates into a single timeline (complete with a desktop widget and the ability to update one or more of your own profiles with just a few taps).

More surprising is a noticeable improvement in touchscreen quality when you have both devices side by side. We’re not sure exactly what HTC have done with the Droid Incredible’s capacitive layer, but it’s both more accurate and less likely to miss taps than that of the Nexus One. Many Google phone users have complained of patchy touch response, something we’ve not encountered on this newer handset. The Incredible also has a broader brightness range than the Nexus One, particularly at its lower settings.

The Droid Incredible’s main competitor on Verizon is likely to be the Motorola DROID (review on SlashGear). It’s a testament to Motorola’s ambitious design that, while the DROID has been on sale for several months now, it’s still a viable option among newer devices. Like the Incredible it has a 3.7-inch display (running at the slightly higher 854 x 480 resolution) but the Motorola uses a more traditional LCD panel than HTC’s currently favored OLED screens. Although the latter is arguably more power efficient, the DROID’s display is in our experience just as bright and color rich as that on the Droid Incredible; it also has the benefit of being more usable (at lower brightness settings) outdoors.

As with the Nexus One, the Motorola runs Android 2.1 with no embellishments (not even the company’s own MOTOBLUR social networking integration). While you could argue that the DROID’s slide-out hardware QWERTY keyboard makes it a more proficient messaging device, HTC’s updated Mail client actually pushes the Incredible ahead in our opinion. Although 2.1 has native Exchange support, it’s only for email and contacts; the HTC app adds in calendar sync too, and the mail app itself allows you to view messages organized by whether they’re flagged, unread or from certain “VIP” contacts, or if they’re meeting invitations, and there’s a threaded “conversation” view too. Although the Motorola’s QWERTY is fair, HTC’s standard on-screen keyboard is a pleasant boost over and above the regular Android QWERTY – thanks to improved auto-correction – though we’re also fans of Swype on which we’re actually faster than with a hardware ‘board.

The flip side to out-of-the-box usability with Sense, though, is the ease of future OS updates. It’s telling that, in the months the DROID has been on the market, Motorola have already upgraded it from Android 2.0 to 2.1; HTC users have been waiting considerably longer for an update of early Android devices (such as the HTC Hero) to a newer version of the platform. That’s down to the headaches of getting Sense to play nicely with a changed OS, and while we don’t doubt HTC’s intent to keep the Droid Incredible as current as possible, we also feel pretty confident saying that the Motorola handset, unmodified as it is, will likely get official builds sooner.

Where the Droid Incredible particularly kicks away from the Motorola – and, for that matter, the Nexus One – is with its camera. It’s not just a win on the spec sheet, either; the Incredible’s 8-megapixel autofocus camera has a brighter, dual-LED flash than the Nexus One, and the still photos it takes are significantly better than those of either the Google phone or the DROID. It’s also more flexible, with granular control over exposure, contrast, saturation and sharpness, ISO ranges from 100 to 800 and optional geotagging and face detection. Sadly there’s no 720p HD video recording on any of the three devices, but the Droid Incredible’s 800 x 480 WVGA footage is reasonable if uninspiring.

Unfortunately, the flip side is battery life. The Nexus One requires some goading of settings to get it through a heavy day’s use, and – since some of the more recent firmware updates – the Motorola DROID actually stretches out its battery surprisingly well. Here, though, the Droid Incredible falls resolutely into bottom place; we’re not sure quite what’s happened, but it ousts even the hungry Nexus One. With the settings as standard, and push email turned on, we didn’t make it through a full day of use before the phone expired. Toning down the amount of social network updates that Sense makes, together with notching down the screen brightness a little, each helped prolong things, but the Incredible is definitely an over-eater.

Compounding the issue is the absence of a charging dock. Both the DROID and the Nexus One can be paired with an optional cradle, and we’ve found that we’re more likely to drop each phone into its respective dock than we are to plug them in with a regular microUSB adapter. That way, the handset gets a mild top-up and you get to stay wireless for more of your day. The Incredible’s lack of charging contacts (unlike the Nexus One) and side-mounted power connector mean a portrait-orientation dock is unlikely, and the fact that Sense doesn’t have a landscape-orientation mode leaves us doubting that HTC plan a cradle similar to Motorola’s.

It’s frustrating, because there are lots of power-hungry reasons we’d rather have the Droid Incredible in our pockets. There’s Flash Lite 4.0 support in the browser, for one, though performance at streaming video is very much dependent on the bitrate it has been recorded at; too high, and the Snapdragon CPU chokes and playback gets stuttery.

Audio performance during voice calls is a little better than with the DROID, though lags behind the Nexus One. That’s primarily down to the Incredible lacking its sibling’s noise-cancelling microphone array. Meanwhile 3G data performance over the Verizon EVDO Rev.A network was strong, though without a CDMA Nexus One we can’t make any direct comparisons. As with the DROID, the Incredible is CDMA-only and – shortsighted in our opinion – lacks global 3G support; saying that, as far as we’re aware the upcoming Verizon Nexus One won’t get that either. If you regularly travel outside the US and still want to use your smartphone, neither the Incredible nor the DROID are the devices to choose.

Strong contender as the Motorola DROID is, the Droid Incredible by HTC edges ahead by virtue of its better performing camera and Sense UI. Similarly, we’d pick the Incredible over the Nexus One; don’t underestimate the value of having Verizon’s after-sales support network to hand, something that – even when the CDMA Nexus One goes on sale – the Google-branded phone will lack. Our only real Incredible concerns begin with battery life and end with firmware updates; we hope HTC can tweak their power management to address the former, though the latter could be the sting in the smartphone’s tail. As we said with the HTC Desire, though, opting against a Sense device out of what may or may not transpire a number of months into the lifecycle does mean you’re missing out on an excellent handset experience today.

When the HTC EVO 4G arrives on Sprint later this year, the Android balance will change again. Connected services are arguably the future of smartphones and mobile devices, and the boost in data speed WiMAX will bring may just change our minds again. Until then (and of course that assumes you live in an area served with Sprint 4G coverage) we’re leaning toward the Verizon Droid Incredible by HTC. International travelers and those unwilling to experiment with their data and power settings should look elsewhere, but everyone else will be enjoying excellent camera performance served up in a user-friendly package.

Verizon Announces Droid Incredible by HTC

It’s been a long time coming, with all sorts of leaks, documents, and blurry cam images to make any Android fanatic out there ache in the knees to get some kind of official announcement by Verizon Wireless about the existence of the handset. Well, for all of you out there who were waiting to see what all the fuss was about, here you are. The Droid Incredible by HTC has gone on the record as being the latest member of the Droid army for the nation’s largest wireless carrier. And it’s as every bit as good as we had heard rumored.

The Droid Incredible by HTC is an Android-based device, running the latest (Android 2.1) version, but upgraded with the latest version of HTC’s Sense User Interface (as we’ve seen on the Desire). Droid Incredible by HTC gets official Verizon specs

Yesterday it was official confirmation that the phone was coming – at least in the shape of a preorder phase – on April 29th; today Verizon Wireless have given us the official spec sheet for the Droid Incredible by HTC (aka the HTC Incredible). To be fair, it’s nothing we haven’t seen before in previous leaks, but it’s always nice to have confirmation of things like HTC Sense, that 8-megapixel camera and 1GHz Snapdragon CPU.

There’s also 8GB of internal storage (with a microSD card slot), a 3.7-inch WVGA OLED capacitive touchscreen and Android 2.1. In the box buyers will get the Incredible itself and a USB charger, but seemingly no hands-free kit according to Verizon’s spec page.

All we need now is an official press release with some pricing, and we wouldn’t be surprised to see that drop in the few days remaining of this week. Already we’re wondering why anyone would hold out for the similar – but still lesser-spec’d – Google Nexus One which Verizon should be launching soon too, especially given that the Incredible will be sold in-store while the Google phone will continue to be online-only.

Verizon confirm Droid Incredible by HTC preorders April 29th

We won’t lie; the HTC Incredible is one of the devices we’re particularly looking forward to this quarter. Packing similar specs to the Google Nexus One, only with a higher resolution, 8-megapixel camera and HTC’s Sense UI, Verizon have just confirmed that the Android smartphone go up for preorder on April 29th as the Droid Incredible by HTC.

Specifics about the phone are left to our imagination, however. There’s no sign of an actual release date, nor how much the handset will cost, and we’re in the dark about monthly plans (though it seems a safe assumption that Verizon’s regular smartphone plans will apply).

However, thanks to a recent spec sheet leak we do know all the specs, including the 3.7-inch WVGA AMOLED capacitive touchscreen, EVDO Rev.A, WiFi b/g/n and Bluetooth. There’s also 8GB of onboard storage, an optical trackpad and microSD card slot.

Full HTC Incredible specs leak from Verizon

Verizon’s HTC Incredible looks set to cast even the carrier’s imminent Google Nexus One into the shade, and going by this leaked spec sheet that found its way into the BGR’s hands, we’re wondering who exactly would pick the Nexus. The Incredible has a 1GHz Snapdragon chipset with 8GB of internal memory, an 8-megapixel autofocus camera and EVDO Rev.A. There’s also a 3.7-inch WVGA OLED capacitive touchscreen and WiFi b/g/n.

The whole thing measures 4.63 x 2.3 x 0.47 inches, which actually makes it a little smaller than the Nexus One too. It’ll also come with HTC’s Sense interface running on top of Android 2.1. All in all, we can’t wait for this smartphone to hit the market, and only the HTC EVO 4G really stands a chance of besting it in the near future. Click here for the full-sized image.

How many of you are still reeling from that Apple keynote this morning? We understand where you’re coming from. Those features are a long time coming, but it looks to us that Apple has indeed made it worth the wait. Then again, you might have a different opinion altogether. Thank goodness we have the Daily Slash to distract us from all that Apple news, right? Right. And sure enough, we’re going to make sure that we skimp the Cupertino-based news in tonight’s edition. First up, with the Best of R3, we’ve got a seemingly confirmed release date for a pretty incredible device. And then we’ve got a giveaway to announce on EI. HTC Incredible Slated for April 29th Release Date, Courtesy of Best Buy: This device is definitely one of the most anticipated devices coming to Verizon Wireless, and we’re pretty sure that someone out there is excited about this little bit of news. According to a leaked internal screenshot from Best Buy, the HTC Incredible is going to hit store shelves on April 29th. The big question: will it hit Verizon Wireless store shelves the same day? Fusion of Ideas Gives Away Two StealthArmor Protective Skins: This doesn’t count, because it’s not about Cupertino, Apple, or about what the iPad can do. This is just a friendly reminder that Fusion of Ideas has provided Everything iPad with two StealthArmor protective skins for the new tablet, and they’re giving them away. Samsung Moment Gets Upgrade to 2.1 Thanks to Devs: The truth is, the wait for the prodigal upgrade from Google is one hard task for many people. Especially when everyone else seems to be getting them, right? Well, that’s why there’s a bunch of hard working individuals out there, slaving away to make sure the most recent builds of those updated firmwares get released well in advance of any kind of official release. So, that’s exactly what happened with the Moment. Two builds, one of which seems to work better than the other, but at least it exists, and it’s able to hook you up right now. And, we also know that some of those motion-based lights out there are just so ridiculous, big, and obtrusive that making that happen can be a lot harder than it looks. Thanks to highly efficient LEDs, the light can provide up to 150 hours of illumination on four C batteries. That’s a lot of light. You can place the light practically anywhere, thanks to the mount, so sticking it on random sections of your house shouldn’t be that big of a deal at all. Besides, it looks really nice. [via DVIC]

Rescue Balloon Will Help Rescuers Find You, Once They Start Looking: So, you’re lost. You’re in the woods. Your GPS is broken or not working. And, sure enough, you don’t have your satellite phone on you for whatever reason. So, what do you do? Well, the only thing you can do: pop your rescue balloon. That’s right. Just fill it with some helium (that comes in the whole “rescue package”), seal it up, and then send it skyward. You’ll then have a big ol’ red arrow pointing down at you, for when the search party starts looking for you. Of course, you’ll have to survive on your own until a search party starts looking, but hey, at least you’ve got an arrow to find your body. One way or another. [via Yanko Design]

BlackBerry Bold 9650 and LG Fathom Hit Verizon Wireless Systems: Well, looks like the BlackBerry Bold 9650 just got a bit more official, if these screens of an internal Verizon Wireless system are to be believed. It’s interesting to see that it’s listed as a global device, too, if you look at the top right of the screenshot. Also a world phone, is the LG Fathom VS750, which is a Windows Mobile-based device, has a QWERTY slider, and a 3.2-inch WVGA screen. Oh, and it has a 3.2MP camera on the back, too. Sounds like a great mid-range device to us, even if it is packing Windows Mobile (or maybe that’s why it’s a great mid-range device). [via Boy Genius Report]

HTC Incredible, Microsoft Pink and LG VS750 among Verizon’s six new devices?

The leaked Verizon teaser may have people wondering what six imminent devices the carrier may have up their sleeve, but one of BGR’s sources reckons they know the truth. According to them, the line-up includes the HTC Incredible, LG VS750, the Microsoft “Pure” and “Turtle” Project Pink devices and the Samsung U820 Reality. As for the sixth device, that’s unclear, but both the BlackBerry Bold 9650 and the Google Nexus One are possibilities.

Now, it’s worth remembering that BGR weren’t able to corroborate the list of device, but it certainly makes sense given what we’ve heard rumored about the carrier in recent months. We should know more about the two Project Pink handsets after Microsoft’s event on April 12th.

It’s Wednesday. And interestingly enough, we’re probably not the only ones considering today “the day before.” The day before what? Well, it’s the day before we get to fire up our legendary, homegrown liveblogging system again. We’ll be at the iPhone OS 4.0 event, and hopefully you’ll join us as we detail what’s going down with the latest software update from Cupertino. Until then, we’ve got tonight’s Daily Slash. As we go forth, we’ll look into the best of the best in the R3 Media’s network. And in the dredge net, we’ve got the most notorious eReader rumored to make a retail appearance soon, and we have Nintendo telling the world that the iPad isn’t for gaming. Then we’ve got lightsabers that will save your from the dark. And finally, a cellphone that goes way out of its way to be ridiculous.

The Best of R3 Media:

The MyTouch Slide Shows Up in RadioShack: No, no. Not in stores. Well, not where you can get to them as a consumer, anyway. It looks like the MyTouch Slide has popped into a RadioShack inventory list. Unfortunately, the internal list doesn’t have a picture (because we’re hoping it doesn’t look like this), and it’s listed as coming soon. That soon seems pretty . . . Soon, especially if those rumors of a May 17th launch date turn out to be true. [via Android Community]

Apple’s iPad Gets Reviewed: The iPad is one of those devices that’s going to keep getting scrutinized for quite some time. If the iPhone is any indicator, it will keep getting scrutinized up until about the next one comes out, and maybe even past that. But, that’s not stopping the glowing reviews from being issued. Everything iPad reviewed the tablet from Apple, and while there might be some snags (that may get cleared up tomorrow), the overall assessment is that the new gadget from Cupertino is a nice addition to their line-up. Verizon Wireless Has New Phones Coming Soon: Who would’ve thought! Sure enough, there seems to be enough rumors floating around (or swirling around in a gigantic storm, if you prefer) that Verizon Wireless executives needed to push out a message to employees that they do, in fact, have some new handsets planned for release soon. There’s even more rumors about what the devices may be, and let’s face it: there’s good reason for those rumors. From the Android side of things, it could be an internal message saying that the HTC Incredible is set to launch soon. Or, if you want to remember Microsoft’s got something planned on April 12th, we could very well be seeing the Turtle and Pure hitting shelves soon. Your guess is as good as ours. [via SlashPhone]

Amazon Kindle Hitting Target Stores April 25th: We wouldn’t be going out on too far a limb here if we were going to assume that Amazon, the house that built the Kindle, is a bit worried about the iPad. Yes, the Kindle may still be one of the best, if not the best singular eReader device on the market, but with the launch of the iBookstore and iBooks, the Kindle has some major competition. So, what’s the next step (besides launching a new device)? You start selling your product in brick-and-mortar stores. According to a snapshot of a Target inventory device, there’s a 6-inch Amazon Kindle device listed for purchase. The price? $259 (still). Rumor has it that the device will hit stores on April 25th. Nintendo’s Reggie Fils-Aime Says the iPad Isn’t a Threat: First, this: “Clearly, it doesn’t look like their platform is a viable profit platform…” That’s the start of a very interesting quote from the President of Nintendo of America Reggie Fils-Aime. The rest goes on to say that, because there’s more free downloads than paid ones, the iPad (and iPhone/iPod Touch by default) isn’t a threat to Nintendo, or any of its mobile gaming platforms. We’d have to second guess that a bit, considering reports from companies like Flurry, which tracks sales from Apple’s mobile devices, estimated that there were 30,000 games available in the App Store, and that all of those games bring in an estimated $500 million. Perhaps to Nintendo that’s a low number, but we don’t imagine that Apple, or Steve Jobs for that matter, is wondering if their platforms are gaming worthy. [via Kotaku]

Lightsaber Nightlight Will Keep You Safe From Shifty Sith: Are you a fan of Star Wars? No, a real fan. Because this nightlight is even worse than the bookends we’ve seen in previous editions of the Daily Slash. Well, perhaps worse isn’t the right word, but we will say that this is definitely a product for the hardcore. (Though, we could be wrong.) This lightsaber nightlight actually has seven different color modes, and you can change the color just from a button on a separate remote. The lightsaber light itself hangs on the wall, wherever you want to put it, and it looks like it might do a pretty good job of actually discarding some of those shadows. [via DVICE]

This Cellphone is Made of Marble. Really: There’s nothing much else to add here. This is a cellphone, made of marble. And yes, it’s going to be expensive.
