The Daily Slash: April 16th 2010

The Daily Slash: April 16th 2010

Here we are at the end of the week, and don't you feel better for it? Thanks for sticking it out with us. In tonight's Daily Slash, we've got a nice mix of interesting stories, so we'll have to jump right into it. First up, in the Best of R3, we've got something like an official statement about Android 2.1 for Sprint; Steve Jobs has his own style of PR; and finally a phone like the Samsung Galaxy S heading to T-Mobile. And then in the dredge 'net, shrimp and glass may be the next best thing in medical; rollerblades are so yesterday; the XPERIA X10 can't do multitouch, but it's getting it anyway; and finally, Apple's getting sued.

The Daily Slash: April 9th 2010

It's Friday night, and you're probably out doing something else right now. Then again, if you're reading this, maybe not. Unless you've got one of those fancy things that gives you the Internet in the palm of your hand. Then hopefully you've been taking SlashGear all over the place with you. In any case, welcome to the Daily Slash, where we bring you the best of the 'net. First up, in the Best of R3 section, we've got the HTC Hero getting a new leak; the iPad feels a sizeable Quake; and AT&T is trying to change a few things. And then in the net, we pull up a good old story that just won't die about Halo; a Chinese chess set perfectly placed in the digital age; bad news for England; and finally, a litter box of the future.

The Daily Slash: April 5th 2010

Welcome to the Daily Slash. If this is your first time 'round these parts, doubly welcome! We're happy to bring you the latest and greatest in the tech news every day, but some times we can't fit it all in the normal flow of the work day. So, here's our friendly wrap-up, where we even manage to wrap it up in a bow tie (if you wish hard enough). Tonight, we've got The Best of R3 Media to start off the night (a brand new feature that we're adding to the Daily Slash from here on out). And then, as we jump into the meat and bones, we'll take a look at a website that makes picking your seats for your next Major League Baseball game so much easier. Next, a jacket that's made for your iPad, a car of the future, and we finally have some good news for the company that brought us webOS. So, let's get crackin'.

HTC Hero Android 2.1 update from April 4th?

HTC Hero Android 2.1 update from April 4th?

It's looking more and more likely that HTC will miss their self-imposed deadline for the Android 2.1 update for the HTC Hero, which we were told back at MWC 2010 would arrive in February or March.  According to a supposedly leaked timescale document on xda-developers, HTC in fact won't start pushing out the update until April 2010, kicking off on April 2nd with the unlocked version of the smartphone.

HTC Legend: I need a Hero

HTC Legend: I need a Hero

You could well argue that the HTC Hero was the Android smartphone of 2009. While Motorola's DROID brought with it a larger display, newer version of the OS and arguably more functional hardware keyboard, HTC led the pack months in advance. Multitouch-capable, distinctly designed and outfitted with a genuinely compelling UI in the shape of HTC Sense, the Hero fast became the poster-child of Android. Now, the company are hoping to follow that success with the HTC Legend, a slick Hero update with a tactile unibody aluminum shell. Is it a worthy sequel or has the HTC Desire stolen the Legend's flagship thunder; more importantly, is it sufficiently different from the smartphone it replaces?

HTC Hero Android 2.1 due Feb/March with Sense update

While HTC have three new phones today, that doesn't mean they've forgotten about the promised HTC Hero update. According to the company, the Hero will see not only an Android 2.1 update but a refresh of HTC Sense too, though not with the full functionality of what's found on the new Legend and Desire.

HTC Hero gets Exposé Sense homescreen [Video]

We've made no attempt to disguise our love of HTC's Sense UI system on the HTC Hero and other handsets from the company, and it looks as though something even more interesting is in the works.  A video has emerged showing the HTC Hero running what looks to be a new version of Sense, complete with some multitouch functionality in the Android desktop and a new way of viewing homescreen panes.

The new view is seemingly triggered by a pinch gesture - as if zooming out - which calls up seven thumbnails.  Each thumbnail looks to represent a different homescreen panel, which you can then tap to access; it seems to work like Exposé on Mac OS X.

HTC Legend caught on camera again; Hero 2.1 update in March

Had enough of the HTC Legend yet?  No, us neither, and so it's great to see the Android smartphone - which we're presuming is the successor to the well-esteemed HTC Hero - show up in the wild again.  After its first live appearance yesterday, the Legend has now given us a side-shot over at Android Community.

Update: Picture looks to have come from @Xmoo on Twitter; thanks @ardoudwokke for the heads-up

Android 2.0 HTC Hero firmware not due until March?

Android 2.0 HTC Hero firmware not due until March?

HTC Hero owners have been eagerly anticipating the promised Android 2.x update for their handsets, but according to the latest information it seems there's a little while longer to go yet.  According to a comment from a member of Irish carrier Meteor's support team, HTC don't expect an Android 2.0 firmware update to be released until March 2010.

GSM HTC Hero update released [Updated]

A new ROM update for the HTC Hero has gone live on the company's UK support site, but right now it's not entirely clear what the new firmware addresses.  Version 2.73.771.73 (H3G) was released today and is apparently a "generic software update" free of any carrier modifications; however we've tried to download the package using the serial number from a regular, unlocked GSM Hero only to be told that it's unsuitable for our device.
