‘HTC Droid Eris’ Stories

Verizon Droid Eris owners have been hankering after the features only made available for the most recent editions of the Android mobile OS (it’s been running  version 1.5 for ages), since the last update failed to deliver anything solid.  XDA Developers have leaked an updated build that, through comments, seems to be the real deal.  More information after the cut.

There’s a whole lot going on here, and nothing making absolute sense, but evidence of the Droid Eris finally receiving an over-the-air Android 2.1 update has surfaced moments ago, and verified by more than several users.

Did you wake up this morning to a firmware update?  Owners of the HTC DROID Eris on Verizon may have, since the carrier has begun OTA distribution of the 1.16.605.1 ROM [PDF link].  While we'd love to see Android 2.0 on the cards, unfortunately this is more a bug fix and feature fettle release, including such niceties as better switching between 1x and 3G networks.

We're filing this particular tidbit in the "we'll believe it when we see it" box, but according to Verizon the HTC DROID Eris will seen an update to "newer Android operating system software" in Q1 2010.  phoneArena's sources have suggested that the Verizon DROID, meanwhile, will get the Android 2.0.1 update on December 11th, while both it and the DROID Eris are expected to get Android 2.1 on January 22nd.

It comes as little surprise given we’ve already seen it unboxed and know the pricing, but Verizon Wireless have officially announced that, as of tomorrow, they’ll be offering the DROID Eris by HTC.  Basically another version of the HTC Hero, the HTC DROID Eris packs a 3.2-inch capacitive touchscreen, 5-megapixel autofocus camera, EVDO Rev.A and the HTC Sense UI.

Neither Verizon nor HTC have officially confirmed the existence of the Verizon DROID Eris, but unless you’re looking at the handiwork of a particularly impressive Halloween costume (sized for hamster) then we’d say the Android smartphone’s existence is pretty much assured.  The BGR received two live shots of the HTC DROID Eris – you can see the second after the cut – together with a little feedback as to how the handset performs.

We may have accused the HTC Eris – aka the Verizon DROID Eris by HTC – as having underwhelming specs this week (what can we say, we want some Snapdragon!) but according to the latest batch of leaks Verizon will at least be pricing it right.  gdgt’s Peter Rojas has heard from “a very trustworthy source” that the Android smartphone will be priced at $99 with a new two-year agreement, just half the price of the Verizon DROID by Motorola.

Remember the Droid Eris, Verizon’s second Android handset and their first from HTC?  It seems that Verizon staff are already being trained on the technical details of the smartphone, thanks to a leaked screenshot over at AndroidGuys.  Meanwhile BGR are reporting on the specs of the Eris, which may come as something of a disappointment.

By now we know that the Verizon Droid not only looks good, but has plenty of technical promise too, and BGR have followed up their preliminary hands-on with a more comprehensive preview of the Android smartphone.  The Motorola Droid gets praised for its “sharp, vibrant, bright and really, really responsive” 3.7-inch capacitive touchscreen, while the keyboard may lack travel and feature closely-packed buttons but it’s good enough for “efficient” typing and is better than the T-Mobile G1.  Meanwhile the charging dock/multimedia station (which you can see in a video demo after the cut) automatically turns the Droid into a weather station.
