The first Windows Phone 7 device on the carrier’s network, the Trophy is the same 1GHz, 3.8-inch WVGA smartphone as we reviewed all those months ago, though now with World Phone functionality to play nicely with Verizon’s CDMA network and GSM/HSPA roaming outside the US.

Verizon will be selling the HTC Trophy online from May 26 and in-store from June 2, priced at $149.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate and assuming a new, two-year agreement. Buy before July 15 and they’ll give you a free Xbox 360 game, too: either Halo: Reach, Kinect Sports or Lode Runner.

Microsoft has confirmed that color banding and resolution issues HTC HD7 and HTC Trophy owners experienced after installing the recent Windows Phone 7 NoDo update was intentionally provoked, blaming HTC for stepping outside of the strict specification rules for the platform. According to a Microsoft support team member, HTC granted the two smartphones 32-bit color depth support, and NoDo switched that to the mandated 16-bit; in the process it triggered visual glitchiness and banding, a side-effect that Microsoft reckons users shouldn’t actually see.

“When HTC launched the HD7 and Trophy they upgraded the color depth to 32 bit, which was outside of Microsoft’s design requirements of 16bit. Microsoft implemented the design standards to help ensure the best possible and consistent experience for all customers on all Windows Phones. To continue to deliver a stable and consistent customer experience, HTC returned the devices to the 16 bit design requirements as part of the March (7.0.7390) update.

The color palette change should not make a noticeable change to most customers experience on their Windows Phone 7. Microsoft’s goal is to ensure that the device is performing as optimally as possible – and as always their engineering teams continue to investigate the opportunities for future improvements.” Aled T, Microsot Support

As you might expect, that didn’t go down well with HD7 and Trophy owners. “I think it makes a BIG difference. Everywhere” Trophy user Santiago Castelo suggests. “Apps, games, photos, videos, bing background, lockscreen, marketplace… it’s everywhere, and in some places (like the marketplace shots) it looks terrible.”

Castelo has shared a gallery of shots (one of which is above) showing just how his phone now displays various images and how they’re meant to look. It seems Microsoft turned off 32-bit support but didn’t turn on dithering, leaving the handsets looking distinctly underwhelming.

Verizon may well be the last big US carrier to have a Windows Phone device on the market, but going by the latest set of leaked HTC Trophy photos their version may have some advantages over Sprint’s HTC Arrive. WPCentral scored some shots confirming what we’ve suspected since the tail-end of last year, that the Verizon Trophy will be a so-called World phone with both CDMA and GSM connectivity.

As well as having CDMA/EVDO Rev.A connectivity for use in North America, the Trophy will also be able to use the GSM/UMTS networks more prevalent in Europe and elsewhere. Considering the Arrive will be little use beyond WiFi when travelling internationally, that’s a big bonus for frequent flyers.

Now for the bad news; according to a Verizon source who is supposedly “involved with the phone,” we shouldn’t expect to see it launch until June. Previous rumors had pegged a late March release, but according to this new information Verizon is still testing it with its large corporate partners.

A shot of a Verizon-branded HTC 7 Trophy has leaked to Engadget, seemingly confirming earlier rumors that
Read The Full Story

Verizon hasn’t officially announced what its first Windows Phone 7 device will be, nor when it might arrive, but if you were hoping for a brand spanking new smartphone running the Microsoft OS then you’ll be sorely disappointed. A shot of a Verizon-branded HTC 7 Trophy has leaked to Engadget, seemingly confirming earlier rumors that the entry-level smartphone would be headed to the CDMA carrier.

That makes some degree of sense considering that, in Europe, the Trophy is a carrier-exclusive with Vodafone, the part-owner of Verizon Wireless in the US. The smartphone was part of HTC’s original Windows Phone line-up back in October 2010.

Back when we reviewed the Trophy – in its GSM form – we found it to be a solid handset with, thanks to Microsoft’s stringent minimum specifications, little to differentiate more expensive models from what HTC told us was the cheapest device in its Windows Phone range. Still, we can’t help but think that we’d rather have the HTC 7 Pro, freshly announced on Sprint last week as the HTC Arrive.

CDMA carriers Verizon and Sprint have been left out in the cold when it comes to Windows Phone 7 so far, but all that’s apparently set to change in January 2011. While so far both networks have only confirmed that WP7 devices are headed their way sometime in the new year, a Neowin source has tipped a January release for each.

The exact handsets themselves are unconfirmed, but a leaked flyer from earlier this year did suggest that Verizon would be offering the HTC 7 Trophy. Meanwhile Sprint is expected to offer the HTC 7 Pro. Microsoft is also expected to release a firmware update for Windows Phone 7 at the turn of the new year, along with a second at MWC 2011 in February.

Microsoft’s strict rules on minimum hardware specifications should mean you’re not giving up much in the way of performance, too, so is this the budget Windows Phone 7 device to go for? Check out the full SlashGear review after the cut.

Hardware

While the HD7 has its huge, eye-catching display, the Surround has its slide-out speaker array and the Mozart its tactile metal chassis, the HTC Trophy falls somewhat short of any stand-out abilities. Fronted by a 3.8-inch WVGA touchscreen and the usual Windows Phone 7 buttons – touch-sensitive back, home and search keys under the display; lock/power on top, a volume rocker on the left and camera shortcut on the right – the Trophy has a microUSB charge/sync port, 3.5mm headphones socket and a 5-megapixel autofocus camera and an LED flash. The top edge of the handset is steeply angled, which leaves both the headphone jack unusually tilted; meanwhile the sleep/power button can be tricky to press, unless your finger is at just the right angle.

Inside there’s the standard 1GHz Snapdragon QSD8250 processor paired with 576MB of RAM, a 512MB ROM and 8GB of non-expandable storage. Wireless options include GSM/UMTS/WCDMA, WiFi b/g/n and Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, along with GPS and an FM radio. HTC’s somewhat arbitrary positioning suggests the Trophy is the WP7 smartphone for gamers, though there’s nothing really in the specs or software to distinguish it from its range counterparts.

Build quality is fair, though we missed the sturdy metal of the Mozart. The back cover is finished in soft-touch plastic, but pulling it off – which requires jamming a fingernail into a cut-out on the top edge – reveals it to be on the thin side. Again, metal would’ve been preferable, and there’s no HD7-style kick stand either. Underneath, HTC has borrowed their sometime-scheme of using a distinctive color finish that you’ll seldom see, with the whole rear panel finished in a custardy-yellow. The only design flourishes on the outside, however, are a little chrome in the screen surround. As for the display itself, viewing angles are better than on the HD7, but still nowhere near the best we’ve seen on a Windows Phone 7 device; still, viewed straight-on it’s crisp and bright.

Software

We’ve covered Windows Phone 7 comprehensively in our Technical Preview, together with our Samsung Focus, HTC 7 Mozart and HTC Surround reviews, and we’d recommend reading those to gain a better understanding of what Microsoft’s new platform brings to the table.

In short, though, the combination of well-tuned software and speedy hardware makes for an enjoyably swift device. The homescreen, with its distinctive tiles, can be as straightforward or as flexible as you want it to be, and the animations – the tiles tilting slightly as you tap them, lists and menus bunching up as you reach their limits, different screens pivoting into place as you move between them – never feel as though they’re holding up the core functionality in the name of visual gloss. Although we like HTC’s Sense enhancements on Android, WP7 feels more consistent with the suite of customizations corralled neatly into the HTC Hub.

The Hub consists of a suite of mini-apps that more closely resemble the company’s Sense experience on Android devices. Loaded via a dedicated tile on the homescreen, it’s packed with HTC’s favorite weather animations and a selection of mini-apps including a flashlight, basic photo editor, stocks app, notes app (in which the notes visibly age the older they are), a sound equalizer and a converter app. HTC has also said it will be releasing further apps for the Hub for users of its devices. While they all work, the overall theme sits uncomfortably with the regular Windows Phone 7 UI, and Microsoft’s decision to prevent OEM modification of the core visuals of the OS means it’s easy to forget HTC’s extras.

The following two videos give a broad overview of the various applications and features preloaded and available through the Windows Phone Marketplace. While they show the Samsung Focus, the core phone experience is basically identical. In them, you can see the Seesmic Twitter app, browsing on the IE7/IE8 based WebKit browser, the calendar (which supports day, month and agenda views, but no week view) and more.

Camera

The Trophy’s camera is capable of 5-megapixel stills or 720p HD video, though like other Windows Phone 7 devices the latter bizarrely defaults to a lower resolution and must be changed every time you flip over to video recording. It’s a frustration, and easily forgotten when you suddenly spot something worth filming.

The two-stage camera shortcut button on the side allows you to lock focus with a half-press, and happily the Trophy doesn’t spend too much time hunting. The key itself is also more reassuringly solid than that of the HD7, which makes for less wobbly shots. With no Xenon flash, unlike the Mozart, you’re left with a single LED and, unsurprisingly, mediocre low-light performance. Outdoor images are clear but lack detail and can show unpleasant amounts of digital noise when enlarged, though colors are generally well balanced if lacking some of the more natural saturation from the Mozart’s shots. Indoors, or at night, and the LED flash underwhelms, with images tending to the murky.

Video, meanwhile, is solid if not stand-out, and pretty much matches what we’ve seen from other recent 720p-capable smartphones. Again, low-lighting leaves things murky, blocky and uninspiring, but given ample daylight to play with, the clips are reasonable jag-free. Windows Phone 7 lacks any sort of video upload abilities (you can email photos, but they’re automatically resized) so the only way to offload them is via the PC or Mac sync apps.

HTC 7 Trophy 720p HD video sample:

Phone & Battery

In-call audio is good, as long as you’re using the earpiece rather than the speakerphone. Calls were clear and reasonably crisp, but the positioning of the Trophy’s loudspeaker on the raised camera bump means it’s wasting most of its energy talking to the table. Happily HTC offer an optional “Attentive Phone” app for download, which automatically turns on the loudspeaker if you flip the Trophy face-down. That done, audio is far clearer; HTC should probably have installed this out of the box as part of the Sense suite.

HTC opted for a 1,300 mAh battery in the Trophy, as with the Mozart and a little larger than what you’d find in the HD7. Official figures are up to 330 minutes of 3G talktime (405 minutes GSM) or up to 435 hours 3G standby (360 hours GSM). In reality, we managed a full day with push-email turned on and typical use (including some browsing, photography, media playback and apps), though taking advantage of the slightly-larger display for video did see the battery gauge drop a little faster than we’d have liked.

Wrap-Up

There’s a sense that HTC has had trouble positioning its Windows Phone 7 range, as evidenced by the awkward – and unearned – “gaming” tag the Trophy has somehow acquired. With near carbon-copy specs, the Trophy instead falls back on its competitive pricing to differentiate itself; it’s a tricky strategy, as it leaves the smartphone at the mercy of carrier deals rather than relying on some stand-out feature of its own.

Unfortunately, the Trophy’s screen isn’t big enough to oust the HD7, high-quality enough to rival the Samsung Focus, and its camera skills fall short of the Mozart. Yes, you can have it from free on a £25 or higher contract on Vodafone in the UK, but there’s no shortage of Windows Phone 7 competition and we can’t help but think that, over the two-years of an average carrier agreement, we’d rather spend a little more and get better build quality or stronger functionality. The HTC 7 Trophy isn’t a bad handset, but it struggles to lift itself out from Microsoft’s WP7 launch line-up. If you like the OS – and we really do – there are better models out there running it.

As you may well know, at any given point in the day, it’s late enough in the day that it’s already a completely different day on the other side of the world. Right now, it’s October 21st in New Zealand, which can mean one one thing: there’s a dude who has seen Lord of the Rings more than 50 times, and now he is able to purchase a Windows phone 7 handset. He is so very happy about this, and the people selling it to him seem joyous as well.

This dude, who will be more than likely forgotten in about 10 minutes for his awesome achievement, is named Jourdan Templeton and is a Computer Science student at the University of Waikato. His feat is to be the first person in the entire world to purchase a Windows phone 7 handset, hooray for him! It appears that it might be a HTC 7 Trophy – a phone which, if you ask me, isn’t quite as hot as the HTC 7 Mozart. You be the judge whenever you get your claws on them.

HTC had previously told us that none of their Windows Phone 7 devices would be available SIM-free and unlocked at the point of launch, since carriers had negotiated exclusives with the manufacturer. There are three HTC devices – the HTC 7 Trophy, HTC HD7 and HTC 7 Mozart – which will arrive in Europe from October 21.

However Expansys is still showing their listing for the HTC 7 Trophy, albeit with the expected release date pushed back to November 11. We’re checking in with Vodafone for a comment, but we don’t expect the carrier’s exclusivity agreement to be quite that short-term.

Update: We’ve spoken with Vodafone, who tell us that the HTC 7 Trophy will only be available through them. Interestingly, they say that exclusivity is for the lifetime of the device, and that they currently have no plans to offer it on prepay or as a handset-only deal.

Amazon Germany, for instance, has the HTC HD7 listed for €599, albeit with no estimated release date. It’s not just HTC devices either; the retailer also has the LG Optimus 7 up for preorder at €499, also with no release estimates.

Interestingly, HTC told us in a WP7 pre-brief that their devices wouldn’t be offered SIM-free and unlocked for an unspecified period after launch, since the first wave of handsets were all carrier exclusives. If Amazon and Expansys are to be believed, that exclusivity period is a little under three weeks.

Update: Clove UK is also listing the HTC 7 Trophy, for £423 with initial stock expected at the end of October.

Update 2: Not so fast – HTC 7 Trophy preorders are being pulled all over, as Vodafone insists it has an exclusivity deal over the lifetime of the handset.

Continuing on our hands on treatments of the just-announced plethora of Windows Phone 7 devices, the HTC 7 Trophy lines up to get handled and photographed. The moment we picked up the device, we were immediately reminded of the HTC Desire. Even the battery cover feels directly inspired by the previously released Desire, featuring the same method of removal, and the same texture. Not that that’s a bad thing, especially considering HTC manufactured both handsets. But, the Trophy does feature a (very) small increase in screen size, with its 3.8-inch display.

The Trophy obviously features Windows Phone 7, the newest offering from Microsoft. Other features of the devices are similar to previously announced devices: you get a 5MP camera on the back, and you’ll find a 1GHz Snapdragon processor under the hood, making sure the device is snappy enough to keep up with you. There’s plenty of images in the gallery below, and a video will be coming soon, so stay tuned.

HTC has announced its range of Windows Phone 7 smartphones, with models set to debut in Europe on October 21 and in the US on November 7. The HTC 7 Mozart, HTC 7 Trophy and HTC HD7 will all launch in the UK as carrier exclusives, while the HTC 7 Surround will be an AT&T exclusive in the US. Meanwhile a fifth device, the HTC 7 Pro, will arrive in Europe later in 2010 complete with a side-sliding QWERTY keyboard and broad network availability . More details after the cut.

The HTC 7 Mozart will be an Orange UK and T-Mobile UK/USA exclusive, and has a CNC “unibody” chassis in the same theme as the HTC Legend. It has a 3.7-inch WVGA LCD TFT capacitive touchscreen, an 8-megapixel camera with autofocus and a Xenon flash, and 8GB of onboard storage. Like all of HTC’s Windows Phone 7 devices, it runs Qualcomm’s 1GHz Snapdragon QSD8250 chipset, together with WiFi b/g/n, 512MB of RAM and 384MB ROM (with a further 64MB on the Snapdragon). HTC describes the 7 Mozart as their music-centric WP7 device.

The HTC 7 Trophy will be an exclusive to Vodafone and what the company expects to be the “most aggressively priced” of the new Windows Phone 7 devices. It has a 3.8-inch WVGA display and a 5-megapixel autofocus camera with LED flash, and is described as focused on gaming and entertainment.

Finally for the European launch, the HTC HD7 (shown at the top) will be exclusive to O2 in the UK (and non-exclusive in the rest of Europe). As the name suggests, the HD7 is the successor to the HTC HD2 and has a 4.3-inch WVGA touchscreen, a 5-megapixel autofocus camera with dual-LED flash and HD video recording, and a kick-stand for propping the smartphone up for easier video viewing. Two SKUs – with either 8GB or 16GB of onboard storage – will be offered, with the HD7 billed as “a cinema in your pocket”.

As for the HTC 7 Pro, the company has not yet revealed full details but we’re expecting the smartphone to have roughly the same specifications as the other three models only also toting a slide-out QWERTY keyboard for easier text entry. It will be available in 8GB or 16GB versions, and be broadly available across European carriers before then end of 2010 and in North America – on Sprint and Rogers Wireless in the US and Canada respectively – early in 2011. HTC is also promising a wider range of Windows Phone 7 designs from mid-2011 onwards. More details on the AT&T HTC 7 Surround here.

All of the HTC Windows Phone 7 devices will have the company’s Sense-inspired Hub, complete with a custom Notes app – with Post Its that visibly age the longer you leave them – Lists, Flashlight app, Stocks/Shares, Weather, Photo Exchange, Sound Manager and “Love” (the latter being a bizarre “he loves me, he loves me not” flower-picking gimmick). They’ll also support Dolby Mobile and Surround Sound.

Interestingly, none of the HTC Windows Phone 7 smartphones will be available SIM-free and unlocked at launch, unless you can persuade one of the exclusive carriers to sell you one. That will undoubtedly change later on, but HTC refuse to be drawn on how long their exclusivity agreements are.

HTC GOES BIG WITH MICROSOFT; LAUNCHING FIVE NEW WINDOWS PHONE 7 SMARTPHONES

HTC brings its trademark innovation and design to a fresh, new Windows Phone 7 portfolio –
HTC 7 Surround, HTC 7 Mozart, HTC 7 Trophy, HTC 7 Pro and HTC HD7

NEW YORK – October 11, 2010 – HTC Corporation, a global designer of smartphones and long-time Microsoft partner, today unveiled five new Windows Phone 7 smartphones: HTC 7 Surround, HTC 7 Mozart, HTC 7 Trophy, HTC 7 Pro and HTC HD7. This strong and diverse family of phones features Microsoft’s new Windows Phone 7 platform and embodies the stand-out design and innovation for which HTC has come to be known. Each new phone includes a variety of cutting-edge technologies and a series of unique HTC applications that can be accessed through the new HTC Hub that complements the Windows Phone 7 Hub and Tile experience.

“Windows Phone 7 is an entirely fresh mobile experience, on which HTC is excited to be going big. We see tremendous customer opportunities with the integration of Microsoft’s most popular services like Xbox LIVE and Zune,” said Peter Chou, CEO of HTC Corporation. “The value Microsoft is bringing to mobile customers around the world sets a new benchmark for the industry. HTC will be introducing five new HTC Windows Phone 7 smartphones at launch to support our customers with a broad variety of choice.”
“HTC has been a partner with Microsoft since we launched our first phones nearly a decade ago, and we couldn’t be more excited to continue this journey with the launch of Windows Phone 7,” said Andy Lees, President of the Mobile Communications Business at Microsoft. “Windows Phone 7 characterizes a new direction for Microsoft and its partners, and HTC is stepping up to support this in a significant way by bringing five new Windows Phones to market.”

Windows Phone 7
Windows Phone 7 has been carefully crafted to help people get more done in fewer steps with a unique Hub and Tile interface. The Windows Phone 7 Hubs offer quick and easy access to a person’s latest and most valuable information and include People, Pictures, Games, Music & Video, Office and Marketplace content. Windows Phone 7 also integrates with many popular Microsoft consumer services such as Xbox LIVE, Windows Live, Bing and Zune.

HTC Windows Phone 7 portfolio
HTC has brought its innovative design and creativity to its new Windows Phone 7 smartphone portfolio by embracing distinctive materials and unique design elements while providing an exciting set of cutting-edge features and technologies. With the new HTC Hub, HTC is providing an exclusive series of applications and utilities that include a new weather and stocks application and a new photo enhancer that enables a person to apply special effects before sharing photos with friends.

HTC 7 Surround
Whether it be gaming, movies or music, HTC 7 Surround is the ultimate multimedia device. With a unique slide-out speaker and integrated kickstand with integrated Dolby Mobile™ and SRS WOW HD™, the HTC 7 Surround delivers high-fidelity audio and virtual surround sound that enable people to share their favorite music and videos with their friends in style. No longer are they forced to use headphones for a great surround sound experience because the HTC 7 Surround speaker makes the listening experience natural and comfortable.
HTC 7 Mozart
Crafted from a single piece of anodized aluminum, the HTC 7 Mozart feels great in the hand and takes HTC’s unibody design aesthetic to the next level. The slim, solid and smart HTC 7 Mozart sounds as good as it looks and integrates Dolby Mobile™ and SRS WOW HD™ for high-fidelity, virtual surround sound. With Microsoft Zune integration, people can synchronize the HTC 7 Mozart with their PC, enabling them to take their music and video library with them wherever they go.
HTC 7 Trophy
HTC 7 Trophy harnesses the power of Xbox LIVE. Gamers will enjoy the speed and responsiveness of fast action gameplay supported by the phone’s high-performance 1GHz Snapdragon processor, and controlled through the vivid WVGA 3.8” touchscreen. High-fidelity, virtual surround sound – through SRS WOW HD™ – brings a rich audio experience whether the user is playing a game, watching a video or listening to their favorite music.
HTC 7 Pro
The development of the HTC 7 Pro was inspired by power users who want to combine the ultimate in business efficiency with the ability to take full advantage of their leisure time. The sleek handset slides opens and tilts to reveal a full QWERTY keyboard for fast, comfortable typing, while productivity features such as the ability to sort, scan and manage Outlook email, open and edit the latest Office documents on the phone and keep track of the markets with HTC’s stocks application, offer new ways to maximize the business day.

HTC HD7
HTC HD7 owners can enjoy their favorite videos and movies in cinematic-style thanks to the large 4.3” high-resolution screen, while its kickstand allows them to sit back and enjoy the action handsfree.
