Let me see how simple I can make this because there are just a few facts that you should know, probably the most important facts of the day if you don’t count most of the other facts from the HP/webOS situation everyone was freaking out about earlier today. Head to that link for most the details, then come back and remember this bit: HP is weighing spinning off its PC unit. This basically means that HP is looking to do SOMETHING with its PC unit, also known as HP’s PSG, or Personal Systems Group, this sect of HP responsible for PCs, hand-held PCs such as mobile devices, software for the home, and more. SOMETHING means either a complete selling off of the PSG portion of the company or “spinning it off” meaning it would still sort of be part of the company, but it’d be like Beavis and Butthead’s Daria or Happy Days’ Mork and Mindy or Laverne and Shirley – separate but in the same universe.

HP not ditching webOS, just the hardware

Following earlier reports that HP will be discontinuing its webOS ecosystem of devices, including the Veer, Pre3, and TouchPad, an insider source has informed Thisismynext that the company will not be abandoning the platform entirely. Earlier today we received word that not only would HP be “spinning off” or completely separating from their PSG* division, they’d be completely stopping production of all webOS phones and the TouchPad tablet, as well as the webOS mobile operating system. Why on earth would they do such a thing when their PC division is the biggest in the world and their preliminary results of the third fiscal quarter of 2011 is at $31.2 billion, up from $30.7 billion the same quarter last year? HP Discontinues webOS Handsets, Touchpad, and Entire Ecosystem

Today HP revealed that they would be announcing that it will completely discontinue operations for all webOS devices. This affects the HP TouchPad and all webOS handsets. This does not mean that webOS will be cancelled altogether and forever, though it certainly doesn’t bode well for those who’ve invested in the HP/webOS combination in the meantime. This comes after less than stellar sales on the TouchPad and a request from Best Buy for HP to take back all their tablets.

HP TouchPad unsold stock mountain prompts Best Buy ire

Best Buy is reportedly refusing to keep the huge, unsold stocks of HP TouchPad tablets it has in its warehouses, with the retailer said to have sold less than 10-percent of the 270,000 units it initially ordered. The company has apparently told HP that it wants to return some of that stock, AllThingsD's sources tell them, with sales that have only amounted to around 25,000 of the tablets. Another source said the estimate was on the "charitable" side and that, even with recent discounts and what has now become a permanent $100 price cut, sales are still underwhelming. This past week brought more patent litigation drama along with new rumors for the exciting gadgets to come in the next few months. Sales of Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 10.1 have been blocked in Europe after Apple won a preliminary injunction on the tablet. Apple became the world’s largest company briefly when its market valuation surpassed that of Exxon Mobile. Windows Phone Mango is now rumored for a September 1 launch with Nokia confirming closure of its US Symbian and feature phone operations. Today’s HTC announcement call yielded many Beats and not too many big surprises since the bulk of the news was leaked and we’d already had knowledge of the $300 million dollar investment HTC is making in Beats audio. This left the question and answer segment of the call to seek out brand new information and specifics regarding the deal as a whole. One of the biggest of these bits of information was the fact that HTC and Beats Audio are making this an exclusive partnership, at least as far as smartphones go.

HP TouchPad 4G Visits The FCC, Heads To AT&T

The HP TouchPad will soon be getting a 4G version on AT&T's HSPA+ network. The 4G model just passed through the FCC today with documents showing all its proper 4G labels, indicating that it's on track for release sometime this month. The HP TouchPad has been getting all sorts of discounts lately, which must have surely aggravated its earliest adopters that paid full price. Just two weeks after launch, the TouchPad already had $10 sliced off by Amazon and Best Buy followed by another $50 discount from HP and then a promotion for August 5-7 that offered a $100 discount. HP has offered TouchPad early-adopters a $50 App Catalog credit, in an attempt to stem the tide of ill-feeling after the company discounted the webOS slate so soon after it went on sale. The voucher is available to anybody who bought their TouchPad in the US between July 1 and August 4. Meanwhile, the first feedback on the success of TouchPad price cuts has emerged, with the news that Woot's sale - which saw the 16GB version cut down by $120 - saw 612 tablets sold. If you picked up an HP TouchPad in the past day or so, you could have shaved anything up to $200 off the list price for the webOS slate, as HP and its retail partners kick off a round of aggressive discounting.
