Nokia N8 first-impressions [Video]

, Jun 14th 2010 Discuss [7]

Nokia’s N8 remains one of the more interesting smartphones of 2010, and we leapt at a chance to have an extended play with the Symbian^3 handset as it made its debut in London this morning. Toting a 3.5-inch capacitive touchscreen with multitouch support, 12-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics, 720p HD video recording and a Xenon flash, and a slick anodised aluminium chassis, our biggest question was whether Nokia’s OS fettling had been enough to make the N8 competitive with what’s an increasingly competitive smartphone market. Check out our impressions – and some hands-on video – after the cut.

VIA EITX-3001 squeezes 1080p HD playback onto tiny mainboard

You can generally rely on VIA for a skinny mainboard with HD credentials, and their new VIA EITX-3001 doesn't disappoint.  Based around the Em-ITX standard, a compact 12 x 17 cm form-factor, the fanless EITX-3001 packs an integrated 1.3GHz VIA Nano E-Series processor, VIA VX855 media system processor and HDMI connector, and is suitable for outputting 1080p High Definition video with hardware decoding of MPEG-2, H.264, VC-1 and WMV9 content. 720p HD for Nexus One closes iPhone 4 gap [Video]

With the iPhone 4 and Motorola XT720 both coming to market with native 720p HD video capture, it's time for the Nexus One to catch up or give up; happily, thanks to xda-developers, a new firmware hack can grant the Google Phone high-def camcorder skills.  Currently available for Nexus One handsets running Android 2.1, and with a test version for those running 2.2 Froyo on their phone, it allows for recording at up to 1280 x 720 resolution. Motorola XT720 hands-on [Video]

It takes a brave company – some might cruelly say foolish – to launch a touchscreen-centric smartphone on the same day that the next-gen iPhone is expected to debut, but Motorola are obviously confident enough in the new Motorola XT720 that they’re willing to take on Cupertino. Based on the MOTOROI handset that launched a few months back in Korea, the XT720 could be summed up as a Motorola DROID without the QWERTY keyboard (and just 10.9mm thick as a result), though there’s also an 8-megapixel autofocus camera with Xenon flash to sweeten the deal.

Viliv X10 tablet takes on iPad with 1080p, HDMI & more

We've a soft spot for Viliv, since the Korean company have actually managed to get more than one MID and/or tablet device onto the market rather than just push out renders, and so the company's new Viliv X10 slate is all the more interesting.  LaptopMag grabbed some hands-on time with the 10-inch 1366 x 768 16:9 capacitive touchscreen tablet, complete with an unspecified ARM-based processor that's 1080p HD capable.  Connectivity puts the iPad in the shade, too, with HDMI, an SD card reader, USB and WiFi, and Viliv reckon there'll be options for 3G and WiMAX too. $99 Apple TV update gets iPhone OS, 1080p HD and cloud-storage?

, May 28th 2010 Discuss [4]

Details of Apple's upcoming Apple TV platform refresh have emerged, with Engadget claiming to have heard from a trusted source that the Cupertino company is planning a new, $99 set-top box that would use iPhone OS and cloud-based storage.  In fact, the new Apple TV sounds a lot like a headless-iPhone: it's described as having minimal ports, basically just power and a 1080p HD video output, as well as using the same 1GHz Apple 14 CPU and 16GB of onboard storage. Viliv HD5 1080p PMP gets listed; launch imminent?

, May 26th 2010 Discuss [1]

We've generally stuck to Viliv's MID and netbook ranges before now, but the company's HD5 PMP deserves a second look.  Built around a 5-inch WVGA capacitive touchscreen, the HD5 supports a bevy of video codecs at up to 1080p HD resolution, complete with an HDMI port for hooking up your big-screen TV.  Announced officially back at CES 2010, it's fresh to the company's website and presumably preparing for an imminent launch. HTC EVO 4G Review

Long anticipated, hugely specified and just plain huge: there’s a lot to like about the HTC EVO 4G. The first WiMAX phone in the US brings with it the promise of DSL-like mobile data access along with the flexibility of Google’s Android OS, complete with HTC’s now-legendary hardware quality and flexible Sense UI. On the flip side it’s nowhere near cheap and WiMAX coverage is marginal. Is this new superphone faster than a speeding bullet, or is that just how quickly it drains its battery? Check out the full SlashGear review after the cut.

OmniVision Takes Samsung’s Crown of World’s Smallest 1080p Camera

, May 17th 2010 Discuss [1]

All of these companies get passed around so much, from providing one thing to another, that it can be hard to keep up. Samsung, which just last month announced that they had the smallest 1080p camera module on the market, have now just been usurped. And, sure enough, it's from OmniVision, which probably got bumped out of the iPhone HD game by LG Innotek. It's a vicious world, the tech world, but we're happy that we're viewing it from the looking glass. Read The Full Story

Sony NEX-7 with 1080p coming later in 2010

, May 13th 2010 Discuss [5]

Sony's NEX-3 and NEX-5 are all well and good, but with high definition recording topping out at 1080/60i there's a distinct lack of 1080p HD goodness in the range.  According to EOSHD's sources - previously accurate in their NEX predictions - that'll be taken care of with the Sony NEX-7 later in the year.  That camera will use an APS-C chip, though a different one to what's found in the NEX-3/5, capable of 1080p@60, 1080p@24 and 720p@120/60 for super slow-motion.
