Apple questioned by FTC over HealthKit data

Apple’s HealthKit may be ahead of the curve when it comes to platforms and data gathering from multiple sources, and the FTC wants to know how Apple will handle the data we give up. According to Reuters, Apple has been approached by the FTC in a fact-finding mission to discover how our health-related data will be used. Fitbit pulled from Apple Store, likely due to HealthKit

Fitbit pulled from Apple Store, likely due to HealthKit

Fitbit’s aim is to build their own platform up, much like the robust system Jawbone has with Up. The difference, at least as Apple seems to view it, is that Jawbone supports HealthKit, Apple’s back-end for cobbling together your health stats. Fitbit has already noted they aren’t interested in supporting Apple’s health initiative, instead taking the “wait and see” approach. Fitbit is currently swearing off HealthKit, but aren’t staunchly against the platform. It seems they’re just being pragmatic about Apple’s new fitness darling.

Apple’s HealthKit finally got some much-needed integration over the weekend, and the apps taking advantage keep trickling in. Some, like Centered, aim to bring balance via meditation — not for everyone. Healthcare provider Humana has updated their app to work with Apple’s platform, and it might be the first to give you reason to use HealthKit.

HealthKit apps start trickling into the App Store

With iOS 8, the promise of HealthKit apps left us wanting. Not ready for primetime, HealthKit — and the Health app loaded on your phone — were useless. iOS 8.0.1 fixed HealthKit, but broke other, more necessary items. Now that iOS 8.0.2 is out, we’re starting to see HealthKit apps trickle into the App Store.
