If you’ve spent any time here at SlashGear you’ll probably know that we’re big fans of Sleek Audio.  We rated their SA6 in-ear monitor earphones highly, then their W-1 Kleer wireless adapter took a successful product and cut the cord.  At CES last week we stopped by the Sleek stand to check out their Customs, individually made based on silicon moulds of your ears, for a perfect fit.  At $300 they’re the current pinnacle of the Sleek Audio range; after the cut, we let the company fire gunk into our ears.

Jaybird have announced their 2009 update to the Bluetooth Stereo Claws, and at first (and second) glance they don’t look much different to the current version.  That’s because all of the good stuff is inside: Jaybird have added APT-X audio compression, which they claim is enough to get past Bluetooth’s limited bandwidth and rival the sound quality from wired headphones.

If the lossless wireless sound offered by Sleek Audio’s W-1 adapter appeals, but your budget doesn’t exactly stretch to the $320 the company asks for a set of SA6 earphones and the wireless system, DigiFi’s Digital Opera earphones may fit the bill.  First announced back in May, up until now the earphones had only been available in Korea; now, Kleer themselves are offering them – together with other products using their lossless technology – in the US.

Nuforce’s Icon Mobile is a headphone amp with a difference.  Like most of its ilk, it starts with offering headphone amplification – in this case twin 80mW at 16-Ohm, with a signal to noise ratio of 0.054-percent at 25 mW, 1 kHz – for your PMP, though here to the Icon Mobile offers dual outputs rather than the traditional one.  However it then includes USB DAC functionality, connecting to your laptop via USB and bypassing its audio outputs.

Given that it can be hard enough creating something pleasing in just one of those categories, have the headphone specialists bitten off more than they can deliver? SlashGear hit shuffle and set to finding out.

Dr. Dre beats tour review

By Vincent Nguyen on Wednesday, Dec 10th 2008 1 Comment

Monster Cable’s headphone collaboration with Dr. Dre, the Beats, surprised us with their musical prowess back in August.  While celebrity endorsements tend toward the cheesy, and Monster’s products toward the over-priced, we weren’t expecting much; in actual fact, they proved impressively capable.  Now the pair is hoping to do the same for in-ear headphones, with the Beats Tour: can the follow-up muster the same success?
