There’s definitely still no clear victor in the battle for the high-def disk formats, but HD-DVD has made an advancement into an area that Blu-ray has yet to touch. Your car.

There has been talk recently about Microsoft possibly supporting Blu-ray in the future. It’s an understandable speculation. What if HD-DVD doesn’t really take off? Would Microsoft jump ship and support the other team? Microsoft has decided to settle the matter.

When it comes to the next-gen formats, some people say that the movie releases will be the deciding factor, other people are inclined to think that the price will win the war. I’m inclined to agree with the latter. Once the prices hit the point where the average Joe can pick one up without considering it a “major investment” then things will be decided.

Wal-mart logoHere’s a brief update on the story we covered recently on Wal-mart ordering 2 million HD DVD players. Apparently it resides in the realm of fiction.

Blu-ray HDSo we know that over 1 million Blu-ray disks have been sold, but how many HD DVDs have been sold? Turns out they’re not far behind.

According to the official numbers there have been 998,059 HD DVDs sold thus far. Combine that with the fact that some HD DVD players are being sold for close to $300, I’d say Blu-ray still has a long way to go before they can declare victory.

Wal-Mart LogoIt seems like ever week we’re hearing new evidence of either HD DVD or Blu-ray pulling ahead in the format war. This week is no different. Apparently Wal-Mart has teamed up with a Chinese manufacturer to make an inexpensive HD DVD player.

How inexpensive? Try $299. Granted, Wal-Mart isn’t exactly known for carrying products of the highest quality, but for $299, it makes being an early adopter just a little bit easier.

Sadly, the machines aren’t due to actually be released until 2008. That’s still a long way away and many factors can turn the tide.
