Hitachi have announced a new range of simple USB hard-drives, together with a basic NAS adapter which can connect two external drives to a network.  The SimpleDRIVE Mini and SimpleTOUGH portable USB drives are available in 250, 320 and 500GB capacities, with the former adding ruggedness and the latter basic colors.

LaCie revealed their latest multimedia drive today with the LaCinema Rugged HD. This device offers new upgrades, greater functionality and the ability to play 1080p video through the HDMI port on any compatible TV.

LaCie have given their LaCinema Rugged multimedia hard-drive an HD upgrade, in the shape of the unsurprisingly-titled LaCinema Rugged HD.  The 500GB external hard-drive keeps the shock-resistant chassis, HDMI port and remote control, but now supports 1080p high-definition media in H.264, MKV, WMV9 and MPEG-4 formats.

Panasonic have announced their latest HDD camcorder, the HCD-HS350.  Packed with a 240GB hard-drive and using a 10.6-megapixel 3MOS sensor, the HCD-HS350 also sports an SDHC slot (content with up to 32GB cards) and 12x optical zoom; according to Panasonic, the HS350 can record more than 30 hours of Full HD video.

The recently-released MacBook Pro firmware that promises to enable 3.0Gbps SATA connectivity has ironically been causing problems in third-party drives.  Apple released the upgrade earlier this week, after users of the new 13- and 15-inch MacBook Pro models reported that the notebooks were limited to 1.5Gbps SATA; this did not affect the speed of standard-fit hard-drives, but may have limited future performance should the user upgrade to a faster HDD or SSD.  Now, some users with third-party drives already installed are reporting frequent pauses, usage spikes and data errors with the new firmware.

MvixUSA have rolled out their latest mediaplayer, the Ultio.  A network-connected UPnP streamer, the Ultio has an optional internal hard-drive, can display content from Netflix, Hulu, YouTube and others, and has a variety of connection options.  The company is also claiming that the Ultio supports the largest array of AV formats and codecs for any such device.

Seagate updated their FreeAgent drives today, specifically those for the Mac, giving each new features and improved performance. This comes on the heels of the BlackArmor line upgrade on Monday.

Western Digital have announced their first range of self-branded solid-state drives (SSDs), the Western Digital SiliconDrive III series.  Based on technology acquired in the company’s acquisition of SiliconSystems back in March, the new range consists of two 2.5-inch SSDs and a 1.8-inch model, boasting read speeds up to 100MBps and write speeds up to 80MBps.
