Hannspree has a line of interesting products that it peddles in the UK for fans of computers. I always get a kick out of digital photo frames and computer displays that are inside stuffed animals or look like sports balls. The latest product to land for Hannspree is a new AIO computer called the SN22A1. This computer is a 21.5-inch screen unit that crams all the hardware inside the monitor for style and to take up less space.

The screen uses LED backlighting for power efficiency and it supports multitouch capability. The machine comes loaded with some interesting multitouch apps. The processor under the hood is a dual-core Intel D510 at 1.66GHz. The computer has 3GB of DDRII RAM and a 320GB HDD. An integrated optical drive is included along with a memory card reader, four USB ports, and the OS is Windows Home Premium Standard.

The machine also has WiFi and Bluetooth for connectivity and an integrated 1.3MP webcam. The stand the screen has is very slim and can be tilted for comfort from 10-degrees to 55-degrees. The AIO supports full 1080p resolution and has both HDMI and VGA inputs. It’s priced at £349.99 with VAT; no word on a US release at this stage.

Hannspree‘s Android 3.0 Honeycomb tablet, the SN10T3, isn’t expected to hit the market until Q3 2011, but the company had the freshly-released SN10T1 on show here at IFA 2011 today. Based around a 10.1-inch 1024 x 600 touchscreen and NVIDIA’s Tegra 2 processor, the slate may run Android 2.2 Froyo but it’s well hidden under a custom UI. Still, that decision has left the SN10T1 missing a few key features which may take some of the shine off of its low price tag.

Video demo after the cut

Perhaps the biggest issue is the absence of Android Market support. The SN10T1 is preloaded with AndroidPIT‘s App Center, an alternative download store, but since the Hannspree doesn’t tick all of Google’s check-boxes for phone functionality it can’t have the official Android Market. Meanwhile, because it falls short of the 1280 x 800 display (and twin cameras) that Android 3.0 Honeycomb mandates, it can’t run the tablet-centric OS either.

So, the experience falls short of what you get with, say, a Motorola XOOM, but instead you get a significantly lower price tag of around €349 ($505). Build is reasonably chunky and fairly high quality, all plastic and no metal, though the SN10T1 certainly falls well short when it comes to the current race to be the slimmest slate.

Hannspree SN10T1 hands-on:

TapTap’s custom UI actually does a solid job of reskinning Froyo for tablet use, with chunky icons, a completely reworked Settings UI, browser – with Flash Player support – that feels more like a desktop app, and a new split-layout keyboard. No 3G inside, but you do get WiFi and Bluetooth; unfortunately the connection wasn’t working so we couldn’t benchmark the slate.

Those looking for the very latest – and most complete – Android experience will probably find a Honeycomb tablet more to their liking but, as we’ve seen with the Advent Vega, there’s plenty of interest in the budget section of the market if the price is right. Hannspree has already said it will be bringing the SN10T1 to the US, and that sort of broader availability will definitely work in the tablet’s favor.

Hannspree may be best known for its animal-themed TVs, but the company has brought along more details on its new SN10T3 tablet along to the IFA 2011 Global Press Conference. A 10.1-inch slate, the SN10T3 runs – like most of the Android models we’ve seen so far – on NVIDIA’s Tegra 2 dual-core chipset. It’ll also be the first model from Hannspree to run Android 3.0 Honeycomb, a milestone the company says is down to Google’s demands around panel resolution.

The SN10T3 uses homegrown HannStar IPS LCD panels and Sintek touch modules (both companies are owned by Hanspree’s parent HSD). Unlike the specs shown on previous slides, Hannspree says the SN10T3′s display now runs at 1280 x 800; it also has 16GB of storage, WiFi and Bluetooth. That change in resolution is a response to Google’s limitations to the Honeycomb platform and its distribution; Hannspree says Google insists on a 1280 x 800 screen, which is why its initial SN10T1 tablet (which went on sale recently) and the imminent SN10T2, both of which have 1024 x 600 panels, run a reskinned Android 2.2. According to Hannspree, increasing the resolution basically doubles the panel cost, which would mean they couldn’t bring the SN10T1 and SN10T2 in at €349 ($505) and €299 ($433) respectively; the SN10T3, in contrast, will be €449 ($650).

Instead of 3.0, those two initial models use a TapTap-created interface which brings Froyo somewhat up to speed with Honeycomb. Flash Player 10.1 support, a more capable browser and reworked settings and homescreen interfaces have all had attention. Interestingly, the SN10T1 and SN10T2 are also the first Android slates to support multiple users, allowing various people to access the slate with different settings, homescreen layouts and access to apps. Next month, they’ll both get an Office suite added, with document, spreadsheet and presentation support.

What we’re unlikely to see any time soon is a 7-inch Hannspree tablet. The company says its plans have been “put on hold for the moment, we have some doubts with that segment.” Still, they’re more likely than anything bigger than the SN10Tx-range: “You might see in the future 7-inch devices; bigger than 10-inch, I don’t think so.”

Hannspree expects tablets to be the company’s main focus over the next few years, rather than novelty TVs.

Press Release:

HANNspree unveils the new ST series of HD TVs

A whole new level of audio visual entertainment from HANNspree

Hemel Hempstead, 10th August 2009. Consumer electronics specialist, HANNspree, today unveils its new line of HD TVs. The new ST series, which boasts ultra stylish, minimalistic design and breathtaking audio visual performance, promises to deliver a whole new level of entertainment from HANNspree.

Top 5 Must Know Features of the new ST series:
1) Full 1080P HD Resolutions
2) X-Contrast and X-Celerate Technologies
3) Multiple Input Options
4) Multiple Aspect Ratio Support
5) 10Watt Advanced Audio System

The new HANNspree ST series of TVs includes Full HD 1080P resolutions and features HANNspree’s new X-Celerate and X-Contrast technologies. Developed to dramatically improve 3D rendering and the fluidity of dynamic images, HANNspree’s X-Celerate technology reduces response time to ensure sharper images without motion blur, whilst HANNspree’s exclusive X-Contrast technology delivers 10000:1 ultra high dynamic contrast by providing darker black colour and brighter white colour. Picture quality is also enhanced by three key performance features; built-in 3D Comb-Filter and 3D Deinterlace technology which filters out scattered colour signal to produce more saturated colour and life-life image quality, Digital Noise Reduction to improve the overall clarity and sharpness of a picture, and built-in 3.2:2.2 Pull-down Processing which corrects errors in frame rates to ensure smooth, flicker free pictures.

The new ST TVs also feature Multiple Aspect Ratio Support. To avoid any image distortion, the ST series supports a variety of display options such as; Full, Wide, Panarama, Zoom, Subtitle, Auto and Normal views. For example, using the intuitive interface, it is simple to transform an image which may appear stretched in the standard 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio into the perfect 4:3 aspect ratio. This ensures different images (especially from different input devices) are displayed for the optimum viewing experience.

Also taking care of the plethora of input devices your TV plays host to are multiple input options. The ST TVs are 1.3 HDMI compatible and include two HDMI ports to deliver the best HD image quality from the latest HDMI equipped devices such as Blu-Ray players, games consoles and HD camcorders. The series also include the more traditional SCART connectivity, Component and Composite inputs, as well as, VGA support allowing a PC to be hooked-up to transform the TVs into PC monitors for the ultimate media centre set up.

The new ST series also boasts a 10Watt advanced audio system which delivers superior sound quality and provides users with intuitive personalised audio settings (Standard/Music/Movie/Speech/User) for a powerful stereo home studio experience.

The first TVs to launch from the new HANNSpree ST series will be the ST251 and the ST281, 25” and 28” respectively. The new ST251 and ST281 have been designed to enhance contemporary surroundings. Radiating exclusive quality, both feature a sleek, stylish, modern look with softening curves, mirror black bezels and an ultra thin profile giving a truly minimalistic impression (ideal for wall mounting). Larger ST TV sizes will launch later in the year.

The new ST251 and ST281 from HANNspree are available now from www.misco.co.uk and are supplied with a 2yr Collect and Return warranty.

The new ST range will be on display at IFA 2009. For full details on HANNspree’s presence at IFA 2009 visit: http://www.theprroom.com/NEWS/HANNS_IFA09.html

There’s also a 1.3-megapixel webcam, integrated WiFi b/g/n and Bluetooth. Hannspree have bypassed the wimpy 3-cell Wind battery and instead plumped for the 6-cell pack, though they’re not making any runtime estimates, and there’s a 160GB hard-drive and Intel GMA 950 graphics.

Available colors will be gloss white or gloss black, and Hannspree tell us that the HANNSnote will be priced at around £289 ($438) when it arrives in the UK come June. That price seems a little high, given the age of the Wind netbook and the competition on the market, but perhaps buyers will be drawn in, like magpies, by the glossy shell.

TV manufacturer HANNspree may be better known for their slightly bizarre themed monitors, but the company also produces entry level standard displays too. The HANNspree HT09 is one such display, a 28-inch LCD HDTV with full HD 1920 x 1200 resolution, 3ms response speed and twin HDMI inputs.

Being a budget set there are some obvious compromises. Brightness and contrast are an obvious pair: the HT09 manages a relatively weak 500cd/m2 and 800:1 respectively. The in-built speakers, perhaps more important at the budget end of the spectrum as users are more likely to rely on them rather than an aftermarket surround sound system, manage just 5W each.

Still, there are plenty of ports – Composite, Component, two HDMI, VGA, two SCART, PC Audio, Composite Audio, HDMI/DVI Audio – and a headphone output for private listening. The HANNspree HT09 is available in the UK now, priced at £279.99 ($491).

However, if you live in the UK and want to get a new TV that prepares you for the switch, but you don’t have coverage of the digital signal yet, its ok, this TV still has an analog tuner too. The DVB-T tuner will support all the freeview channels, and you can go into interactive mode too, but no Freeview Playback support.

For connectivity you get 2 SCART, 2 HDMI, and an S-Video port. You also get VESA wall mounts and a 8ms response time. All of that for £399 for the 32” and £519 for the 37” models and you can get them now online, if you live in the UK.

In a day and age where all tasteful design points towards minimalism and chic, Hannspree seems to have missed the memo. Its great that they attempt to go the road less traveled, but I have to say some of their monitor designs are God awful and I’m surprised they actually expect us to pay extra for it. Sure, that baseball-themed LCD might be great for little Tommy just as that firetruck LCD might be great for little Timmy, but any parents willing to pay extra for a dressed up inferior 19-inch panel should have their kids taken away.

And do the kids really care if that baseball-themed LCD is handcrafted of genuine leather? Ok, so maybe I’m being a bit harsh, and ultimately there’s probably going to be some fanatic baseball fan out there in his 30s dying to get one of these. Take a look and judge for yourself. I like my bezels thin, you?
