Verizon and HTC announced the Rhyme this morning, a 3.7-inch Android handset finished in a distinctive plum but offering distinctly mundane specifications. We’ve grabbed some hands-on time at the launch event, and while the physical design is good and the build quality decent, we’re struggling to get past both the single-core processor and HTC’s positioning. Huawei has been known in the recent past for making mid-range handsets and today that is exactly what we have in store, along with some added AT&T 4G. They are well known outside of the US but their mid-range skills are here to take on the US Android market with the Impulse 4G powered by AT&T 4G. Acer has officially launched its K330 projector, the first LED model to pack a 500 lumens LED lamp, and with a footprint smaller than a magazine. Running at WXGA 1280 x 800 resolution and promising a 4,000:1 contrast ratio, the K330 not only offers the usual HDMI, component and composite inputs, but PC compatibility, optional WiFi and even an SD card slot and USB port to bypass your Blu-ray deck or computer altogether.
Ooma has been pushing its Ooma Telo VoIP adapter for some time now, promising free US calls and cut-price international rates, and now the base-station has received some home-friendly accessories to help snip through the ethernet cable. The new Ooma Telo Air wireless adapter is, as the name suggests, a WiFi dongle that gives you more freedom to place the main unit away from your router, while the Ooma Bluetooth option is getting extended to all users. Say hello to the newest 4G Android tablet, the ACER Iconia Tab A501. What we have here is the twin brother to the popular Tab A500 yet this bad boy has been treated to some AT&T 4G love. Before we get ahead of ourselves I’ll start by mentioning this is not 4G LTE, instead it features AT&T 4G HSPA+ speeds. We might not have LTE but she cruises along just fine, that and the dual-core NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor helps. Read on below for our first impressions and some hands-on video.
Today we finally were able to see what Microsoft has been working so hard on, and that is Windows 8. With the Microsoft BUILD keynote going today there should be plenty of Windows 8 details and we've already received some good news. For those waiting for an official version instead of those iffy leaked builds the wait is finally over.

Microsoft BUILD kicks off this week, but we’ve already been playing with the star of the show: Windows 8 in its tablet form. SlashGear has been testing out a new Windows 8 slate, complete with sub-10s startup, Internet Explorer 10 for touch-centric browsing, and a new UI – previewed earlier in the year - that’s strongly reminiscent of Windows Phone. Does the world need a new XPERIA Arc? Sony Ericsson seems to think so, and hence the XPERIA Arc S has broken cover. Taking the same, slimline chassis – now in Stormtrooper white – and 4.2-inch display as the original, but boosting processor speed to 1.4GHz, the Arc S promises to bring the Android experience up to speed with what rivals are offering. We grabbed some hands-on playtime to find out if that was true.
Toshiba may have made the most noise about its new Camileo Clip, X200 and X400 camcorders for IFA 2011, but the company slipped another rare beast into its booth. The Calimeo 3D model packs double the lenses into its palm-friendly chassis, recording Full HD 1920 x 1080 footage and allowing users to preview the 3D effect with a glasses-free autostereoscopic LCD display.
Samsung’s Galaxy Note has arguably been the product of the show here at IFA 2011, and so we couldn’t resist another stop by to check out some of the details of the smartphone/tablet hybrid. Much of the appeal is Samsung’s custom software, including surprisingly powerful video and photo editing apps together with digital notetaking that works hand-in-hand with the accurate stylus. Vodafone Germany has quietly brought along a Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 packing LTE and an upgraded processor to IFA 2011 this week, adding 4G connectivity to the 8.9-inch Honeycomb slate. Rather than the 1GHz chip originally found in the Galaxy Tab 8.9, this German model has an unspecified 1.5GHz CPU according to the spec sheet, along with a Super AMOLED display.
