Microsoft talks Windows Phone 7 homebrew with ChevronWP7 team

, Jan 18th 2011 Discuss [0]

When hackers are playing with your platform, you can either try to thwart them - leading to a cat & mouse situation as with Apple and the iOS jailbreakers - or you can work with them; sensibly, Microsoft is apparently doing the latter when it comes to Windows Phone 7. According to WinRumors, the company recently met with part of the ChevronWP7 team, responsible for the Windows Phone 7 Unlocker tool, to discuss how homebrew application developers can co-exist with Microsoft's existing official developers. , Jan 17th 2011 Discuss [1]

With all the Kinect hacks we're seeing, it probably doesn't matter whether gamers are leaving their motion-control sensors to gather dust or otherwise; there are enough DIY-addicts buying it to make the peripheral a success. Latest is Asura's V-Sido remote app for the G-Robots GR-001 'bot, which can follow your movements for some aerobics-style mimicry. Video demo after the cut Read The Full Story

No iPhone Dev Team unlock until iOS 4.2.5 & 4.3 are public

, Jan 14th 2011 Discuss [0]

The iPhone Dev Team has confirmed that they will not be distributing an iPhone unlock tool until iOS 4.2.5 and iOS 4.3 are released by Apple. According to team member MuscleNerd, "it's silly to release anything during Apple betas" because "most people can't take advantage." Apple released the iOS 4.3 beta to developers earlier this week, and already various improvements to the platform have been spotted in amongst the code. Read The Full Story

Geek hacks Kinect to work with Wii controllers for Call of Duty action

, Jan 13th 2011 Discuss [3]

We have seen all sorts of hacks for the Kinect since the motion tracking gesture controller launched for the Xbox 360. The thing is really cool and has turned out to be quite the hackable little device for people to take and use for all sorts of things. So far, most of those hacks haven’t been anything that I am interested in. Read The Full Story

, Jan 13th 2011 Discuss [39]

Sony has decided to voraciously go after the people that offer up hacks and mods for the PS3 console this week after some hacks have surfaced that render existing Sony security on the PS3 moot. The latest hack of the PS3 came from Geohot and landed him in hot water with Sony suing him for circumventing the security on the console despite the fact that bypassing security doesn’t mean the user is a pirate. Geohot and the rest of the fail0verflow team are getting a lot of attention from Sony, all of which is focused around the group's creation of a PlayStation 3 jailbreaking utility. George Hotz (Geohot), Sven Peter, Hector Martin Cantero, and the rest of the team behind the jailbreak are now officially being sued by Sony. The awesome Kinect hacks continue, and BLITZ have delivered what could turn out to be one of the more interesting adaptations of Microsoft's motion-gaming peripheral. They've figured out a way to get the Kinect sensor-bar to work with Flash-based interfaces via Node.js, opening the door to Flash, Silverlight and Unity apps being directly controlled by Kinect-recognized motions. Nexus S Boots Ubuntu

, Jan 10th 2011 Discuss [5]

There's no doubt at this point that the Nexus S from Samsung, which out of the box runs Android's latest version of Android (2.3), is a versatile device. We've already seen the handset boot up MeeGo, and now the developer is at it again. This time, though, we've got Ubuntu loading up on the device. The XDA developer forum member, stroughtonsmith -- or Steven Troughton-Smith-- has gone through the same method of bringing MeeGo to the device, but focusing his attention on Ubuntu this time around. Nexus S Booted to MeeGo OS

, Jan 9th 2011 Discuss [4]

Our pal Steven Troughton-Smith, aka XDA Developers Forum member stroughtonsmith, has released word that MeeGo has successfully been booted from the Nexus S. He and those working with him have booted MeeGo on their Nexus S handsets from a rootfs image on their internal memory - that means no flashing is needed at all! This is big news because not only does MeeGo offer a whole different operating system on a powerful bit of device, but it might very well be the first operating system (aside from the native Android) to work on the Nexus S successfully. Super fun and awesome hackin away! Read The Full Story

PS3 custom firmware hack released

, Jan 5th 2011 Discuss [0]

The leaked PS3 root key has spawned its first public hack, with instructions surfacing on how owners can create their own custom firmware. The handiwork of KaKaRoTo, the actual usefulness of the hack is questionable at this stage; there's no support for running homebrew apps or backup copies of games, and according to the creator it's all "really meant for future homebrew installation" and "will not allow piracy."
