Groupon coming to cash registers as coupons get technical

Groupon is in talks with electronic payment hardware provider Verifone over integrating easier coupon redemption into its systems. According to Groupon president Rob Solomon, speaking to Businessweek, Verifone is among a number of companies the group purchase site is holding discussions with, and may involve the addition of a dedicated Groupon button to cash registers so that businesses could more easily deal with shoppers using the discounts. Remember those strange, controversial Groupon Ads that got everyone upset because they poked fun at raising awareness for such causes as Free Tibet and Saving the Whales?  The idea had to sound good on paper.  Make a commercial talking about some great causes, raise awareness, while letting people know about your product at the same time.  Only, it didn't actually work out that way, so  Groupon has bowed to pressure from complaining special interest groups and pulled the Ads while offering an apology. Groupon Super Bowl Ad Makes Fun of Tibet & Whales, Provokes Ridiculous Controversy

The group coupon buying site Groupon may have damaged its image forever, thanks to a series of Super Bowl ads that were...actually pretty funny. The first one leads in with Timothy Hutton doing a charity commercial-style introduction about the horrors of Chinese-dominated Tibet...and then abruptly bragging about a groupon deal for dirt cheap Tibetan food. The follow-up ad was a plea from Cuba Gooding Junior to protect the whales...that is almost immediately abandoned because whale-watching is "more fun". Read The Full Story
