AMD demo Llano CPU/GPU hybrid and Brazos chips [Video]

AMD has been talking about its Fusion technology for some time now, and the company got around to demonstrating it - together with holding up a big AMD Llano wafer - at a Taipei press conference this week.  SemiAccurate caught the video, together with a second demo showing AMD's Brazos platform in action, while Hexus grabbed some shots of a Llano validation board. TI opens semiconductor wafer fab in Chengdu, China

AMD eye tablet CPU/GPUs after patchy quarter

AMD has suggested it will look to differentiate its future tablet-centric chips by bolstering graphics and video technology, though the company expects netbook CPUs to be its main offering until the tablet market grows big enough to justify the R&D investment.  The comments, by AMD CEO Dirk Meyer, come on the heals of the company's latest quarterly financial report, in which AMD reported net losses of $118m on revenues of $1.62bn; that's a 2-percent sequential decrease, but a 16-percent increase compared to the same three month period a year ago. Microsoft snare GPU acceleration patent for video encoding

Microsoft has been granted a patent for GPU acceleration of video encoding, in a move that could have significant ramifications for NVIDIA, ATI and others.  The patent, "Accelerated video encoding using a graphics processing unit" filed in October 2004, describes a system whereby the GPU can "perform a motion estimation process in parallel with the video encoding process performed by the CPU" to reduce overall encoding time. ASUS ENGT430/DI/1GD3 video card packs GeForce GT 430 GPU

ASUS has officially announced their video card based on NVIDIA's new GeForce GT 430 GPU, and it's the rather extravagantly finned but unwieldily named ASUS ENGT430/DI/1GD3.  A low-profile card with VGA, DVI and HDMI outputs, the new card has 1GB of DDR3 memory, a 700MHz engine clock and 128-bit memory interface, along with the GT 430's 96 CUDA cores. NVIDIA GeForce GT 430 GPU for HTPCs gets official

NVIDIA has officially outed their latest GPU, the NVIDIA GeForce GT 430, a Fermi chip targeted at HTPCs.  The new GT 430 promises 1.5x the gaming performance of previous-gen chips, together with full 3D and 1080p HD video support, HDMI 1.4a connectivity and 24-bit multi-channel audio up to 192KHz (along with lossless DTS-HD Master Audio and Dolby TrueHD audio bit streaming). NVIDIA agrees to settlement for defective GPU

You may remember back in 08 and 09 there were a number of cases when the NVIDIA GPU inside of certain notebooks failed causing the machines to perform poorly and in some cases stop working altogether. One of the major brands affected was Sony among others. NVIDIA has now set up a website for owners of the affected machines to take part in a settlement that has been reached with users in a class action. Read The Full Story

Nintendo 3DS spec leak tips dual CPUs

Nintendo continue to keep the guts of their 3DS gaming handheld under wraps, but that hasn't stopped the speculation as to what might be inside the bright blue, red or black casings.  IGN has put together a potential hit list from a source apparently familiar with the hardware, including twin 266MHz ARM11 CPUs, a 133MHz GPU, 4MB of dedicated VRAM, 64MB of RAM and 1.5GB of flash storage. Intel out 2011 Core CPUs at IDF 2010: 32nm Sandy Bridge

Intel has kicked off its Intel Developer Forum (IDF) 2010 today, and they’ve wasted no time in detailing the 2011 range of Core processors we have to look forward to.  The second generation chips – based on Sandy Bridge technology – will go into production later in 2010 and begin showing up in computers early in 2011.

NVIDIA GeForce GTS 450 1GB gets official for $129

NVIDIA has given the official nod to the new GeForce GTS 450 video card, an "affordable" model that still attempts to deliver decent gaming performance.  In fact, the company reckons the Fermi-based card packs 2.4x the geometry processing performance over its predecessor, along with DirectX 11 support and a roughly $129 price tag.
