nvidia ion logoNVIDIA have released a second graphics product in their Ion range, the Ion LE, intended for entry-level devices such as netbooks and nettops.  Ion LE is apparently exactly the same as the existing Ion – which boosts netbook video performance to handle 1080p high-definition – aside from it lacks DirectX 10 support.

Gaming notebook manufacturer Rock have announced two new models, the Xtreme 790 and Xtreme 840, each offering NVIDIA GeForce GTX 280M 1GB graphics, Blu-ray and up to 6GB of DDR3 RAM.  The Xtreme 790 has a 17-inch Full HD display, up to 1.5TB of storage via three 500GB 7,200rpm HDDs (with RAID support) and Intel Core i7 processors, via the Xtreme 840 steps up to an 18.4-inch Full HD display, Core 2 Duo or Core 2 Quad CPUs, and the potential for two GTX 280M GPUs.

Yesterday’s rumored NVIDIA 40nm GPUs have been made official, in the shape of listings for two new OEM cards: the NVIDIA GeForce G210 and the GeForce GT 220.  Both support DirectX 10.1, OpenGL 3.0 and CUDA, with the G210 having VGA, DisplayPort and DVI outputs while the GT 220 has VGA, HDMI and DVI.

nvidia logoNVIDIA are expected to announce two new GPUs at the end of September 2009, built using 40nm processes.  The NVIDIA GeForce GT220 (GT216) and GeForce G210 (GT218) have been tipped by sources at graphics card manufacturers, with the products expected to go up against ATI’s Mobility Radeon HD 4860 and 4830 products.

Notebooks using NVIDIA’s Ion graphics chipset may still be in short-supply, but that hasn’t stopped the company from developing its replacement.  Ion 2 is, according to Fudzilla, expected to launch toward the end of 2009, with a shrunken die, far faster graphics and many more shaders.

Intel’s upcoming 32nm Clarkdale processor could be seeing a release sooner than expected, according to unnamed sources at motherboard manufacturers.  The company has reportedly brought forward mass-production of the Clarkdale CPU to Q4 2009, compared to the original Q1 2010 date on their timetable.

LG and ARM have announced a partnership that will see the former’s HDTVs use the latter’s ARM11 MPCore multicore processor and ARM Mali GPUs.  The system will allow for not only high-definition 1080p processing but video-on-demand, voting and polling, games, and e-commerce without the need for a separate set-top box.

NVIDIA’s Ion brand could be seen in a lot more places from now on, as the graphics company has apparently approved manufacturers wishing to use the name on non-netbook systems.  Ion was initially used to describe an Intel Atom processor paired with NVIDIA’s MCP79 GPU, the same chip as the GeForce 9400M.

NVIDIA’s Tegra may be stealing MID-lover’s hearts at Computex 2009, but that doesn’t mean the company is forgetting about their Ion GPU.  Taking to the stage with news of a full 21 Ion-based devices - including the ASUS Eee Top ET2002 all-in-one, ASRock ION 330 and MSI Wind Top AE2201 – NVIDIA revealed a mixture of mainboards, all-in-one desktops, netbooks, nettops and notebooks based on the 1080p-capable chipset.

Mobinnova have announced one of the first NVIDIA Tegra-based smartbook/netbook/shrunken-laptops at Computex, the élan.  With an 8.9-inch display capable of playing back 720p video, the élan weighs just 1.84lbs and measures a mere 0.8-inches thick, but still manages to pack in 3G and WiFi, 5-10 hours of continuous HD video playback or up to 24 days of audio playback (assuming the screen is turned off).
