Microsoft’s so-called “avoid ghetto” GPS app draws controversy

A recently uncovered Microsoft patent is already generating a bit of controversy even though it could be years before any sort of product actually materializes from it. The patent is for an app that uses GPS technology to deter drivers from entering neighborhoods that are deemed unsafe. Suunto Ambit GPS watch touts heart rate monitor

Finnish watch maker Suunto recently announced its latest GPS-enabled watch called the Ambit. The Ambit is designed to help athletes with training and outdoor adventure. Supreme Court rules GPS tracking now needs warrant

In a move on a ruling that very well may put Batman’s tights in a bundle, the Supreme Court voted unanimously this week that police, private investigators, and anyone else with a sweet tooth for tracking will have to get a warrant before attaching a GPS device to a vehicle they do not own. Of course monitoring a vehicle’s movements had previously been called legal in a case against a drug dealer that’d been tracked for a month without a warrant, but now according to the Supreme Court, this tracking has been deemed “unreasonable.” Tracking a person with a GPS device without a warrant is now deemed illegal under the 4th Amendment.

ASUS Transformer Prime gets GPS-fix update

ASUS has quietly released a new update for the Transformer Prime, intended to address the persistent GPS issues owners of the Tegra 3 tablet have reported. The update, which can be manually downloaded and installed from ASUS' support site, bumps the firmware to v9.4.2.7, installing Ice Cream Sandwich in the process but also, according to users at xda-developers, unrooting the slate. LightSquared claims FCC GPS interference Bogus

In recent weeks, the folks at LightSquared, pushers of ultra high-speed broadband internet for the future, have been under fire from the FCC as their signals seem to have been interfering with GPS in pre-tests. What's going on now is that LightSquared is saying that the results of these tests were rigged. LightSquared's own executive vice president Jeffrey Carlisle's most recent statement even used the word "bogus" to describe the tests at hand. Read The Full Story

I will admit to being a bit excited at the thought of LightSquared coming to market. Anyone who lives in an area with only one broadband provider offering only slow speeds at a high price would appreciate competition. Telenav Scout GPS in-car display integration hands-on

At Pepcom during CES 2012 we got the opportunity to hop into a vehicle containing a 7-inch display that would, when connected with Telenav's technology, be able to run all the navigation and service-finding awesomeness we've come to expect from the GPS navigation group. What we got to see what just that, an Android device not only mirroring itself to the display, but displaying a whole different interface made specifically for the 7-inch form factor, it showing maps, favorite places, traffic information, information about the current status of your car, and more. Garmin nuvi 3590LMT GPS navigation, hands-on

The Garmin nuvi 3590LMT has essentially everything available on their previous models, but adds a few much welcomed features and the thinnest 5" screen to date. The first of which is voice-activated navigation. It works as it should, and unlike Google services, voice control doesn't require internet access. Google has pushed out its second update for Google Maps for Android in a week, with more new indoor floorplans along with various battery and location fix improvements, while previewing a new map-based Google+ game. JVC has outed a bevy of new in-car head units, ranging from double-din touchscreen multimedia receivers through to motorized entertainment/multimedia systems, at CES 2012 today. Both the KW-AV multimedia range and KW-NT navigation range offer large LCD displays, iPhone multimedia support and, optionally, HD Radio access. Meanwhile, JVC has also added Bluetooth smartphone support with the new JVC KS-BTA100 module, as well as detailed incoming support for apps in its head units. Garmin nüvi 3500 series PNDs pack photo details and Smartphone Link

Garmin's latest personal navigation range has been launched at CES today, the nüvi 3500 series, a flagship line-up of standalone satnav units with select models compatible with the company's new Smartphone Link hook-up between GPS device and Android phone. The nuvi 3450, 3450LM, 3490LMT, 3550LM and 3590LMT each have full color touchscreens (either 4.3- or 5-inches), lane assist and Garmin Guidance 3.0, the company's latest navigation engine.
