Google’s Waze faces lawsuit over alleged database theft

Waze, the navigation app that Google bought and cops hate, is facing a lawsuit for allegedly copying a proprietary navigation database. The lawsuit is being brought by San Francisco law firm Kronenberger Rosenfeld, LLP, and was filed on behalf of PhantomALERT, Inc., which is described as a “GPS navigation technology company.” Waze was acquired by Google, but before that happened, according to the lawsuit, it copied PhantomALERT’s database without authorization. This data was then reportedly used in Waze’s own Android and iPhone apps.

Apple quietly acquires Coherent Navigation for precision GPS mapping

Apple could be looking to bolster its mapping services; which have a bit of a spotted history, polarizing iPhone users. Apple just purchased the company Coherent Navigation which specializes in High Integrity GPS. This specialized GPS system differences from consumer-end GPS systems in that it uses data from multiple Iridium satellite networks to give incredibly precise locations--accurate within centimeters. Apple is keeping mum on the deal, confirming the deal with a standard, boilerplate response, "Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans."

Garmin nuviCam packs dash cam, GPS in one device

GPS navigation, smartphone mount, dash cam — your car’s dash can get cluttered with tech, and quickly. Garmin is hoping to organize your dash a bit, and are introducing a two-in-one GPS navigation unit and dash cam. The nuviCam isn’t two separate devices in one housing, though. The dash cam works in unison with your GPS unit, and can log data in the case of an accident. You can also link your smartphone to nuviCam for hands-free calling, and Garmin will keep you from getting sidetracked with their driver awareness features.
