Number porting now available to current users of Google Voice

Google has just announced that it’s popular Google Voice is now allowing number porting for existing customers. Google Voice mobile number porting trialled ahead of “near future” full launch

Google has briefly trialled number porting for its Google Voice service, offering some users of the VoIP system the chance to bring over their existing mobile number rather than use the Google-supplied number. Google carrier ambitions the “nuclear option” says analyst

Google's potential carrier ambitions are again being raked over, with suggestions that underwhelming net neutrality rulings, the failure of the Nexus One sales experiment to marginalize carrier control, and growing use of Google Voice are all signs that the search giant might cut out the middle man and run its own network. CNN Money reckons that Google's intentions are most clearly telegraphed in a September 2010 SEC filing by the company, in which they voice concerns that net neutrality regulations could allow carriers to "degrade, disrupt, or increase the cost of user access" to Google products and services. When will Skype be Back Online Today?

So, all of you folks out there who use Skype on a daily basis, all the time for chatting and video chatting and calling and all that good stuff, you probably already know that Skype is suffering from a global service outage today. This outage started earlier today, and starting at 3:30 PM ET, the service was on its way back up, the return to full normalcy possibly several hours from now. Skype noted that service was already on its way back to full, but that indeed, several hours would be in play before the entire system was back online. Read The Full Story

Gmail Google Voice calls free through 2011 for US users

Google has announced that it is extending the free voice call functionality added to Gmail chat earlier this year, with the service now to be free throughout 2011 as well. Still limited to US users calling US or Canadian numbers, the embedded Google Voice system routes calls via VoIP and can also be used to make low-cost calls to various other countries. Google Voice adds iPad and iPod touch support

Google has released a new version of Google Voice for iOS that now supports the iPad and iPod touch. Following on from the official Google Voice for iPhone launched last month, the updated version allows the Apple tablet and PMP to send and receive free text messages; although they obviously can't make cellular calls, Google has added Click2Call functionality which lets users trigger a new Google Voice call and choose which of their phones they want to use to make it. We watched as, a few weeks ago, third party Google Voice applications started landing inside the Walled Garden that is Apple's App Store. Cisco Umi HD Video Conferencing System for the Consumer Announced

As far as rumors go, Cisco's video conferencing set-up meant for the general consumer has been at the top of the list for a few months now. Cisco has finally come forward with an official announcement today, pulling the curtain off their brand new HD video conferencing system, now called Umi. Official Google Voice for iPhone app imminent?

Apple's publishing of their App Store guidelines for developers led to all manner of third-party Google Voice apps being submitted - and approved - for iOS devices, but now it seems Google's own app is set to imminently arrive.  TechCrunch has heard that the official Google Voice for iPhone app has already received its initial approval, and that it will pop up in the store as soon as the search giant has finished tweaking it to suit the Retina Display and iOS 4's multitasking.
