ARM in Google TV talks over cheaper, energy-frugal STBs

ARM has confirmed it is in talks with Google regarding running future Google TV hardware on ARM processors, though neither company is talking details at present. Speaking in Taipei this week, ARM president Tudor Brown confirmed the discussions and said that if Google TV is to succeed it needs to use less power and be cheaper, taking a mild sideswipe at rival Intel. Logitech and Sony have been getting all of the Google TV love over here in the States, as both companies have launched products with Google's software installed in the last few weeks. While Logitech focused their attentions on a set-top box, Sony went all-out with a few options for integrated TVs, as well as a Blu-ray player. Samsung, not wanting to be left out of the party, has come forward and announced that, come this January, the company will make a formal announcement regarding their Google TV plans. Google is facing ongoing problems accessing streaming content through Google TV, according to the WSJ, with networks ABC, CBS and NBC all confirming that they were blocking the system.  No official reasons for the block have been made public, but sources familiar with the matter are partially blaming studio concerns over the presence of pirated content showing up in Google TV searches. Sony Says TV Prices Will Decrease by Year’s End, Thanks to Increasing Inventory

TV prices range pretty dramatically, depending on the features in the TV, the size, and the manufacturer. But, it looks like Sony is expecting to watch the TV prices overall start to decline. In a way to stay competitive, if the majority of companies involved in the TV market begin to drop their prices, then other companies will immediately follow suit to stay relevant, especially as certain sized models reach price points of interest for the general consumer. Sony is reportedly looking to outsource production of its high-end LCD HDTVs, with Foxconn tipped to take responsibility for the Japanese company's frameless sets and Wistron the recently-unveiled Sony Google TV range.  According to DigiTimes' sources, the decision is primarily a cost-saving one, with Sony looking to outsource 70- to 80-percent of LCD TV production having just managed to turn around six years of consecutive financial losses by the division.
